Supermarket Fuel?

  • I often get asked if I use or trust fuel from a supermarket? My answer to that has changed in the last few years. (For context, I used to run a petrol station) I thought I would answer this in a short as its not long enough for a full video.

Super market unleaded fuel was delivered to the garages without additives which is why you didn't get the same mpg as buying it from a normal garage who would get the additives mixed with the petrol at the terminal when collecting it.All E5 98+ octane fuel already have the additives mixed in,so that's why you are not noticing any difference to other garages, infact due to a faster turnover of fuel, there's might even make your vehicle run better than buying it from a normal garage. As far as I know E10 is still delivered to supermarket's without additives which is one of the reasons why they can sell it cheaper!

@@TrulyUniqueOne where do you think they keep this bulk stock,at the back of the supermarket 🤔. A supermarket tanker will go to the same petrol terminal as all the other companies use. Yes all petrol is the same base product, and the same octane but additives are added at the refinery for each manufacturer. Ps I'm not talking bollocks as owning a fuel station for 40years has given me some experience!!!!

I did work for a transport company some years ago, after several of the vans suffered major engine problems the boss told everyone on the fleet NOT to fill up at supermarkets. There certainly was a problem with the diesel that they supplied.

Most of supermarket petrol stations buy their E5 from the main providers eg shell BP and ESSO. Found out from a friend who worked in asda who was telling me that shell is one of their main providers for E5 petrol.
Got me thinking why is shell, BP fuel so more expensive than the supermarkets when they provide them the same exact fuel? I’m wondering if it’s bc of this exact reason, people talk and always say avoid supermarket fuels, so are the main brand stations using this to mark up the same product?

They put more additives in the "official" BP and Shell fuels, but the base fuel is essentially the same.
Edit: But yes it's definitely marked up more because it's "branded".

One of the nice things about my 40-odd-year-old BMW two-valve twin (R65Ls) is it would run happily on crappy fuel now we have E number fuel I have to stick E5 (super unleaded in old money) because she runs like a bag of nails on alcohol-laced E10.

I run all my bikes (m1800r, fzs1000, gsxr600 track bike and 160 pitbike) on supermarket fuel. Either from Tesco, Morrisons or Costco. All E10, never had a running issue with any of them. They don't feel any more powerful or smooth running on e5 so I won't be changing unless I get an issue.

I've just filled up the warm hatch with super unleaded from Trago Mills. £1.4something a litre. E10 unleaded is like £1.33. Cheapest place in Devon that I know of and the fuel feels fine. Massive queues though.
And to be fair on that white merc at the end, unless it was just a reminder, the national limit was still up ahead, you were still under the previous speed limit.

It's a little scary how vast and far differentiating the opinions are here, considering this is a extremely well covered (and tested!) topic.
Unlike other countries with less stringent standards, the minimum standard for fuels in the UK is exceptionally high. You can be sure that the fuel going into your vehicle, even at the cheapest of locations is of a good quality.
Supermarket fuel will contain additives and detergents, albeit at a lesser quantities than some of the well known brands. However picking a well known brand isn't necessarily a guarantee your getting the "good stuff" as many tests have shown.
The question you should be asking is " Is the premium fuel worth it?"
Their marketing will tell you, it will make your car last longer and go faster. However, tests have shown that on average premium fuel gives a 1.01% increase to performance (slightly higher on performance vehicles).
There is no shortage of vehicles with 180,000+ miles on the clock that have never had premium fuel added. It's uncommon for the engine to go first, usually the supporting components that get to costly to repair.
In other countries where the fuel isn't as regulated it may very well be worth paying more. But in the UK, with our higher standards, it simply isn't worth it.
Take the Americans. They offer 87 (with no additives), 95 with no additives and 108 87 (with additives).
Our cheapest fuel is 95 with additives, and "nearly" competes with their premium fuel.

@@spicy110 I get the argument of using E5 over E10. However using shell fuel of any variety over say Asda fuel of any variety because shell is the more premium product, supposedly, seems a bit extreme to me.
Obviously if you're using a highly strung machine you're going to want to do the very best you can for it but if a mass produced, globally sold motorcycle can't run well on British supermarket fuel it's a pretty hopeless machine.
