Yeah OP could make the same argument for any shade of any color if they want to be super semantic/technical about it. Like 99.99999% of colors are just mixing multiple other colors together to varying degrees. We still just call them shades of whatever "pure" color they are closest to. Actually, you're wrong. Black isn't a colour, it's the shade of any colour that has had it's main primary colour(s) removed. anything that is black but a bit lighter is a tint for adding white or a tone for adding colour.

@@camreyes1819 but it does prove that either there actually *are* multiple shades of black, or we are wrong almost all of the time when we call something black, simply due to the fact that a darker shade exists, leaving what one would almost certainly refer to as 'black', actually be just an extremely dark grey... and something like vantablack (or whatever the 'blackest' possible 'black' would be) as actually black.
So, the options are either there actually are multiple shades of black, or that 99% of the time, when we refer to black, it's actually just hyperdark grey.

I subscribe to the belief that all colors, including black, are categories. Black jeans and a black leather jacket aren't the same shade but it's still black, you wouldn't say your black sweatpants are grey just because you can see the light on them and they're more than void
I work with painting cars. Let me tell you, there are more shades of black than any other color. Grab two black things in your house, they'll always be different shades of black.

Thank you for posting this saves me the time of arguing it. Saying shades of black are gray is like saying purple is a shade of blue at a certain point it’s black and there are some shades of black that are darker than others.
Actually technically with this logic, than his text could not be black to begin with, as the complete absence of color has yet to be seen by human eyes. We have only ever seen gray.
