This hurts the most. Matlacha was the most charming place with the most charming people.

Thank you for this! I have friends that live here and have not been able to return home. I was watching on my phone at work and was able to capture an image of their home. It's still standing. All of this destruction and loss of life is heartbreaking.

Stayed at the Bridgewater Inn in February. Went to Bert's and the Cup, as well as several of the shops. Also spent time on Pine Island, went fishing with Captain Mike from Hooked Up Fishing Charters, and took an excursion boat out to Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa State Park. Love this area and very sad for all the residents who lost so much. Prayers for the people of Florida!

That is Matlacha. Where the road is washed out, it was marshland and they built it up on the sand then poured the road. So the water just undermined the road and wiped it out. Anyone with a motor boat can get to south Cape Coral in half an hour or so. Our dad put cable tv on the entire island, Bokeelia and St. James City in the 70’s. As a kid, we fished out there often. Especially my dad and brother.

The day after the storm we rushed to matalacha isles to check on my uncle. I’ve never ever been so single-handedly afraid for a single person in my entire life. On the way, we got to talking to a reporter who was telling us they were afraid to even send up drones over matalacha because they were afraid of what they’d see. The police were letting people in matalacha isles, and he was okay. His neighbor had a massive metal beam pierced through their roof. My other aunt and uncles house on matalacha, the first floor was gutted but they weren’t there thank god. Somehow we didn’t get water in the house even though it went like a two inches over the mailboxes in the front, stopped at our hill (and literally against our neighbors door, the weird line of debris the water left actually acting as as seal), and in the back canal.. that water had to be all but eight feet. Over the sea wall and then over our neighbors fence by like two feet. If it wasn’t eight feet I’d be shocked. But what we saw and heard from fort myers beach and matalacha, knowing that was happening all around us during that storm was haunting
However, I’d like to say, this community completely restored my faith in humanity and it cannot be shaken to a breakable degree now. Period. Also..the sky was a cherished gift, seeing the galactic arm, constellations we typically can’t see, andromeda, etc… just billions of stars unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately the night sky was constantly peppered with helicopters. The coast guard, rescuing people from what seemed like line island and matalacha. But even then..l was watching humanity at its finest. Round the clock, 24/7. Our neighbors…I know now the faith that I can put into them ans the trust that I can have for them. People around the community were just..good to each other for the sake of being good because there was nothing else we could do.
Edit* “acting” not “a crime”, thanks autocorrect
