  • I DID IT!!!!!
It’s been 2.5 months working on these ✨ FREE ✨(and super rare) Merton Gershun for American of Martinsville Bali hai nightstands. After I posted my last video.. the most common suggestions were to:
    1. Paint them blue (which is just a mean suggestion btw LOL)
    2. Turn them into firewood
    3. Black paint
    4. Restain
Butttt I decided to go the more difficult and expensive route… here’s how I did it! 👇🏼
+ sanded off wood conditioner and stain with ‪@festoolusa‬ sander and ‪@3MAbrasives‬
+ ordered walnut veneer from Amazon, cut to size with ‪@DremelUS‬ electric scissors
+ refined all cuts with my ‪@HARTTools‬ utility knife
+ applied a black paint onto the front of the drawers and the little legs
+ applied several coats of ‪@MinwaxUSA‬ wipe on polyurethane!
Now.. WHAT DO YOU THINK!? I am in so deep now with countless hours working on these rare nightstands and have spent easily $200 in supplies… so HOW MUCH DO I LIST THEM FOR?! Help!!

The original was vaneered mahogany on cheap wood. the appropriate thing in this case is to re-vaneer. Mahogany vaneer is very thin cause it's a hardwood. You can't sand and refinish it. These are catalog pieces from a US manufacturer that has a designer make a line, they're all vaneered. Bali Hi line from American of Martinsville by Merton Gershun. It's like when Target has a special limited line by a designer, just from the 60's.

I’m disappointed you didn’t embrace its old quirks like leaving the pretzel rods exposed and wood as it was meant to be. In fact it didn’t need walnut veneer or paint at all, I would’ve stripped the paint and cared for the original veneer the best I could embracing the fact it has some beautiful quirks and character like that awesome pretzel rod. Now that’s all covered up, the veneer didn’t do it justice and the black paint was an attempt to make it cohesive and flow with the walnut veneer but how it was originally was is how it should’ve stayed imo. Obviously someone before you made the mistake of globbing ugly paint on it so I appreciate you taking it back to bare wood just wish it would’ve stayed that way with a new coat of finish to protect it. I respect the ppl who take the time to refinish classic antique furniture, mid century, etc but it’s about preserving the best we can and respecting the original eye for design because it’s part of our history and especially one in good shape like this. The original veneer looked pretty good, the pretzel detail I’ve never seen so it would’ve been amazing to preserve and bring back to life.

I think an "after event" discussion is needed, especially people that are new to making over furniture.
My first thought would be identify the problems with the project.
    1. what caused the spots on the bamboo?
    2. If corrected, is that all that is wrong with the piece?
It looks like the wood filler used wasn't compatible with the stain used later. Make sure you fillers are paint and stain compatible, depending on the finish you intend to use.
There was nothing wrong with the top or sides of the piece, with valuable vintage or antique pieces, if it is to be sold-leave it as is-you'll get more money as a valuable antique. Stripping or painting antique furniture destroys its value. Know your market.
Summed up: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If something needs fixing, use products that are compatible with the finishes you want to use

I got the impression that she thought the holes in the front rods were a deliberate stylistic choice from whoever built the pieces in the first place, not actual damage or anything, but I could be wrong?
(I think she was also winging it as she went along, because she had no idea what the wood was actually like or not until after she took the blue paint[ which they came with when she first obtained them] off(and the blue paint was in relatively rough shape), so I don't know that she really made a plan so much as she just decided in the moment while she was working on it-but perhaps that is also a false impression thanks to the shortform content style video/format, idk.)

I just remembered her digging out the holes in the bamboo with a dental pick to get the old blue paint out and that possibly made the holes deeper. Both things laminate or adhesive veneer I think cheapens the product. I am more a fan of the natural wood look with a stain. Admittedly, I’m not exactly sure what I would’ve done with the pretzel Front.

Tip to furniture painters, if you have a piece with damaged veneer? Old towels soaked in water and left to sit about 30 minutes on the piece, it destroys the glue and then veneer scrapes off easily. You must totally soak towels till sopping with water.

The best way to apply veneer, is to apply wood glue to the back of the veneer and to the object. Let the glue dry about 80% and then apply the veneer with a hot iron. BOOM, done and flat as Oklahoma.

    • @bethanyanderson1745
      @bethanyanderson1745 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@toddbloss ▪︎ "flat as Oklahoma" lol. When I've applied thin veneer, it initially has hills like Austin's Hill Country. To flatten the veneer took time and working the veneer with tools, much like applying wallpaper and working out bubbles. We didn't find it easy - and we didn't have corners or edges. But we eventually figured it out.
It's surprising how often old "solid" wood furniture actually has veneer portions. Not the thinner veneer used in the video, but much thicker: 1/16 to 1/32 inch thick. Whether thinner or thicker veneer, each has their applications. And, like most things, veneer has different grades.

So in the UK pretzel rods are called twiglets and marmite flavoured. Don't eat them.
I've had some luck pre gluing both sides with PVA letting it dry and then using heat and a brayer to make the glue melt and re bond .
Much less experience than you but it worked, I had unglued veneer and I'm cheap.
I'm sure it's generally more cost/time efficient to get adhesive backed veneer but there's probably going to be a time you can't do that.

I may have considered after laying the black over the pretzel look, using a few shades of brown/ tan spray paint and with that maybe even a wood grain stencil, but at very least lightly spraying some lighter tones to bring depth back into them, the black definitely takes care of the pretzel look but that doesn’t mean we can’t airbrush her up a little on top of that layer to bring back some depth, the round shaping is ideal for a nice gradient the wood panel does look nice on these I don’t think the black was a bad idea we can 100% work with that more so than the pretzel drawers 🥨😅

I have to unfortunately agree with the others. Staining the wood instead of the veneer and paint combo would have been a much better effect.... and not gonna lie, I actually really liked the pretzel sticks! Might also be because it reminded me of raw tree branches for some species. It was such a warm look, it's a shame it has been covered up. Especially as you now have ended up with a very weird texture on the sticks. The veneer at least is very well applied and I like the overall colour and texture of it (I just innately despise veneers and tend to avoid them at all cost), but the paint was probably the worst of the choices you have made with this and to me "cheapens" the look far more than the veneer does.
