The Florida Everglades is a unique and bio-diverse ecosystem, with much of its flora and fauna found nowhere else.
Bordered by Okeechobee Lake to the north and Biscayne Bay to the south, it is the largest subtropical wildernesses remaining. It covers an area of approximately 1.5 million acres and is made up mostly of wetlands that average four to five feet deep, with the deepest part reaching down to about nine feet.
These wetlands border saw grass marshes, hardwood hammocks, and mangrove forests which provide a rich habitat for wading birds and many other animals. With such crucial species as the white ibis, american alligator, wood stork, manatees, and the endangered Florida panther, to name just a few, the Everglades is a fascinating place to visit.
This is an extended video with many photographs. Most video clips were taken at Everglades Holiday Park (part of Discovery channel's "Gator Boys" was filmed there) and within Everglades national park.
Many people enjoy visiting the park and getting an up-close encounter with a ride on an airboat. Others prefer a more natural encounter kayaking or paddleboarding through the wetlands.
Whatever your preference, the Everglades is a beautiful and diverse place that should be on everyone's list of things to see. So, get out there! Visit the Everglades!
