One of the best episodes of the series I loved seeing another culture's magic explored, even if it was broad strokes. This scene really built up the tension.
Gypsies r like a sister race to witches. If they they were a brother race that would make them sub-species cause there's a "connection". Shuvani r wiccan high priestesses to them. I've alway thought of in the ending when Ava vaquished Orin by summoning ghosts. She said she felt her mother's presence. It was her who deflected the atk. Just like when Prue saw Patty in the pool, 1x13, the ones we love and lost, r never truly gone.
I actually liked it when Phoebe focused on her powers and trying to reconnect with herself I felt that went away after she lost her active powers and they stopped focusing on her abilities other than seeing her future child. I wish they had her use her premonitions and her magic more in the later Seasons other than her relying on her sisters and throwing potions. They had a miss opportunity to make her similar to Grams who could chant a random spell to vanquish a demon and be bad ass, but it seems she just let Piper, Paige, and even Billie do all the hard hitting where she was just in the background obsessing about her job and when she would get pregnant. She even stopped using her martial arts in the later seasons too.
Now knowing what I know about the behind the scenes…I am pretty sure Alyssa or part of the team did not want to pay for phoebes powers special effects, or Alyssa herself didn’t want to do the powers of her role anymore. I assume the acting for premonitions was not the easiest to do like piper just putting up her hands and Paige’s power was all cgi so phoebes levitation and premonitions probably needed to go, therefore, all her powers needed to go for the story to make sense. Plus season 8 wasn’t supposed to even air, so they were all done with the show by season 7, hence why Phoebe barely played any role of being a witch with cool powers in season 8. Honestly, phoebes empathy powers were very cool and I hated that they made the decision to write the story in such a way to not even let her grow that power to where Prue used it in season 2. Phoebe used it like 3 times in 3 episodes of season 5 or 6, and then they made her lose all her powers in that one stupid episode that made no sense - it just came out of nowhere where she used her powers for personal gain and then they took it from her. They did us dirty with the lack of dedication to the story and powers they could have done, but instead wrote out her powers to make the job easier for them.
i remember i used to replay this scene over and over again on DVD, for some reason the majority of the palm reading scene was always so relaxing to me..... years later i learned about asmr lmao. this and olivander's wand shop were definitely my introduction to the phenomenon
Personally they should have had Lydia explain Gypsy Magic something like this. “Gypsy Magic is similar to Witchcraft. But here is the difference. Witchcraft is the culture built upon its traditions. Gypsy Magic are our practices from our culture. People feared our culture and some even still do. So we learned magic and they became one. We hide our magic within our culture so our enemies never truly understand them.”

It would have been interesting if Charmed had expanded on the various types of mystical studies and wicca from different countries and ethnicities.
