The double-stack cars started to show up in intermodal trains around 1985. The first solid double-stack train that I saw was either a UP APL train in Cajon Pass or the NYS&W SeaLand train seen in this video: th-cam.com/video/lAu8g1IE9Oo/w-d-xo.html which still had a caboose.
About one week before I was born. I wish I could have experienced more of the EMD 9 locomotives.
