    I forgot to mention all small blocks with a 3.48” stroke or less seem to run best at 40-42 degrees. 3.75 and longer run much less timing. 36 degrees for 3.75. 34-32 for 3.875 and even less for 4” stroke cranks.

    Damn if I don't love all of the SRC channels! Especially the old man's! I'd love to sit and spend a week with him and pick his brain about things like this but only for half of that time the rest of the week would be just about life and just have some old fashion conversations with him and the family! When I watch these videos I truly feel like part of the family!! I dont get that feeling with all the other channels I watch and I watch all of them that relate to racing..

    The Cummins is Defintely by a huge margin the easiest to work on. It’s like working on an LS vs a coyote or something else with overhead cams. Pushrod I-6. Injectors are super easy to get to. Everything is simple. Wiring is simple. The trucks are a bit of pain though. 06+ have a tipm which is basically a relay fuse box but solid state so if you burn a circuit the whole thing is toast. I had to bypass mine for the ac clutch circuit and just use the input and output through a normal relay because you can’t buy the boxes and they’re not cheap. But overall dodge is the best move for an “older” diesel you’re going to work on yourself. I tried to do the best of both and bought a blown up 6.4 Ford truck and put an 05 common rail Cummins in it. To get the good trans and nice chassis.

    • @masonsmith9222
      @masonsmith9222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just really am not convinced the Cummins is the best. I’m a Chevy guy. But I won’t own anything over than a Ford when it comes to a heavy duty truck

    • @Taylordrifts
      @Taylordrifts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@masonsmith9222 if you’re buying a new truck you can’t beat the Ford. But from basically 03-10 Ford engines had major issues. Good trans. Good truck. Terrible engines. Especially the 6.4. The chevy trucks have an okay engine and okay transmission. But neither are great. Both the Ford and the Chevy V8 diesels are super hard to work on in comparison to the Cummins. The Cummins is as simple as it gets for a modern diesel.

    • @ziptiejedi5658
      @ziptiejedi5658 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely prefer working on Cummins over the power stroke or Duramax. Like you said the parts are easy to get and usually less expensive for the most part. I think it would be awesome to see you sliding around a square body S10. Definitely would be different to see an S10 drifting compared to a 240 or something.

    • @masonsmith9222
      @masonsmith9222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Taylordrifts personally I don’t see how buying any diesel older than probably 2012-15 ish is a good choice. For a nice clean truck, people want 20k. Then transmissions are 6k injectors are few thousand, injection pumps are thousands. I went down this down bc I use my truck to make my living. I decided on a 2015 6.7 powerstroke. With the idea by the time it need any serious work, I’ll trade it on a new one. If your truck is a vital part of your well being, I think it’s worth the money. I’ve seen your swap however, and that seems to have worked out for you.

    • @Taylordrifts
      @Taylordrifts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@masonsmith9222 I’m just not willing to finance a car/truck. Never have. Don’t intend to. Don’t get me wrong. A 6.7 truck would be nice they Tow so well, but I still see people have big problems with brand new trucks as well. And a used 6.7 truck is $35-40k for a decent optioned one with 150-200k miles. I can’t justify that with even bigger cost risks and insane labour times to fix anything major.

    I used to be a manager at a towing company . The Cummins turbo diesel was hands down our most dependable and lowest maintenance trucks. Don't turn down a 5.9L looking for a 6.7L. The 5.9L can do just as much work as a 6.7L the Allison did need a little bit of service as far as one of the plugs inside melted twice, but it was a simple repair and back to work. I think it was for the PTO, so it never left us stranded, just didn't engage. I doubt you would even run a PTO anyway. Absolutely an anvil of an engine.

    Bill, you are the man! Love your channel and watch it daily. I was surprised by the 42 degree locked timing with no retard functions for WOT pulls. At 42 under power in a street/strip car on gasoline I would be too concerned about detonation destroying pistons. I run a 6AL2 with my roots blown 355 and use the map sensor reference to map out 42 degrees at light vaccum cruise, 34 under moderate loads and 31 under heavy loads. I have driven my car in 104 degree weather over steep grades and hammer it on the autocross with no issues. After much effort, she will also idle in heavy traffic for days at 180 degrees. Building and tuning my Holley carbs brings me joy and I'm always striving for the best overall drivability, power, and mileage. I plan to hit the road for Power Tour 2022 with my daughter for a 5K mile journey so mileage matters :). I run non-ethanol pump 92 on the street but would run the same timing on race gas, just swap the pulleys to add boost. As others have stated, I wish I was your next door neighbor! Wishing the best for you and your boys. I forgot to mention that I run 22 degrees at idle but am all in at 2000 rpm so she’s snappy and I have all 42 degrees at light load highway cruise and on deceleration.(update: I just bumped my idle timing from 22 to 31 up to 2000 rpm and this blown 357 is much more happy at cold start, idle and at low rpm cruise. Never stop tuning, they can always run better!

    Vicki's beef and noodles are probably light-years better than mine...BUT my chicken and noodles will blow your mind with how good they are. I'm not your typical guy. I absolutely love to cook and make new things. I love cooking on the best grill ever, a Weber kettle charcoal grill. I enjoy cleaning the house and doing yard work. I love cars and working on them and racing and such. I enjoy video games and movies. I tolerate the wife's "cute" things while shopping. And hell I love to shop too, especially antique malls and flea markets and hobby stores...I blame Bill for getting me into the RC hobby. I'm just starting out but I will have me a gas/nitro unit soon. My buddy had one years ago and the smell and sound of it is unmatched. My stock motor Traxxas slash Ford raptor hits about 33mph out of the box which is plenty enough for our apartment and complex. But when we get a house you bet your ass I'll be building me a rc car track with a race track, crawler track and off road track. You guys stay safe and take care.

    Bill if you can happen into funding a pre emissions Dodge with a Cummins in it thats not all rotted out, BUY IT.. Yes SIR, Those trucks are all that they say they are. Easy to get parts for, and easy to work on. And can easily have performance parts added to make more towing power. Btw, Great video, Very informative. Please do more of these if you have the time. 👍👍👍🙏🇺🇸

    Ya got to get trimmed up once in awhile Mr Bill.
    That is a very nice S-10 !
    I’d have to get rid of that rattling shifter tho & make that throttle cable safer & secure !

    As someone who has owned diesel trucks from all of the big three, I will concur that a Cummins 5.9 or 6.7 is what you want. Preferably one that is pre-DPF and DEF fluid. Bonus if it has already had the flex plate replaced with an aftermarket unit (not hard to spin the centers out of a stock unit). The trucks are pretty stout in stock form, but if towing heavy for long enough, a built trans should be in your future. They respond very well to turbo upgrades, free flowing intakes/exhaust, and reasonable tuning for the intended purpose. Make sure to install an EGT gauge in whatever you get. May save your pistons some day on a 7% grade out West with that big trailer in tow.

    🙌 Bill timing deal is why they sell timing sprockets with advance marks so u can advance it more from sprocket to keep it in ballpark on crank timing degrees, but u did it manually 👍🏼👍🏼

    Mark at A-1 is the real deal, he runs an old school parts store. I worked in several while in college and they are a lot different animal from the chain stores. A comment about Dodge PU's with the Cummins engine. Be careful about how it had been used, like lots of towing. The transmissions can be a problem and get very expensive to overhaul. Precision Transmission in Amarillo, TX has lots of videos on TH-cam that provide great information.

    I don't know just where to start. Good size channel that isn't overwhelmed with comments so maybe you read them. I know all about algorithms and gratuities and so trying to talk to Derick at VVG or Deboss Rich on questions of my own because they have someone else read if at all. You are hands on and not married to a brand. I got rid of the very best rig I ever bought because I can't do my own work anymore. I'm 72, overweight because my legs are mangled up, both feet have Lymphoma, I have a broken neck with a fusion that covers from C2-C5, my lumbar went through five Lumbar fusions but the L4-5 is blown out again with no bone to tie stuff back together, I have had three strokes and so now I can't use but half strength thumb and can use my first finger and middle finger but the other two have zero feeling and so typing out questions or even making a nice comment on your video is very difficult. As for this video, its what I like. It gets into the what why when... most those "w" things. You have been there and done that on most any model rig that you poke your nose over and to me thats a damn good place to go with a rig was it open to public repairs. I owned a shop for auto repair back in 88 I started while a son of mine was in the hospital with cancer as I had been a mechanic on heavy equipment before and that comes with using what you work on or knowing how they work well to make the parts work for you. I was in the southeast alaska and thats all island work and no next door store. You went out in the scrap pile and picked through equipment that died. Some was really old as in the twenties an thirties so not much to pick off of them. I also can weld most anything weldable with a stick or mig. I just never got lucky to do tig. See in 2005, a normal nice day, I go over and help elderly man with food, shopping, cleaning etc., and when I looked around the house to see what or where he was I find him on a ladder cleaning gutters on his house. He is very heavy as it three hundred range and blind legal so on with the story. I try to talk him into coming down and instead he put all his weight on one foot on a wooden ladder that broke immediately and fell. I caught him and it tore his shirt pocket on the t shirt but I set him on his feet unhurt. I then passed out explaining why I am crippled. Damn, this comment if read is too long and sounds like a old bastard whining about life and I ain't so If I hear back.... maybe I will ask some questions.... thanks for reading in advance if you do
