- Drivers of the #30 MOMO NGT 991 Porsche GT3 Cup, Henrique Cisneros and Kuba Giermaziak, explain step-by-step what it feels like to take on one of the most difficult turns in racing: Turn 8 AKA The Corkscrew at Mazda Laguna Seca.
I went down it on a skateboard in 1988 and made it almost to T11.
Bryan Humphries that’s badass
Damn! That’s awesome 👏
Back story please if you still use this account
You're crazy to have attempted that, but that makes since that you almost made it to turn 11. I salute you for even attempting that, yet alone not crashing in the process. That's a memory to be truly cherished for sure!
I'm glad this guy made a reference to video games. I myself love playing Forza with zero assist, feeling like a superhero. It's easy to drive fast when you can just reset a race tough. These guys are sweating out there risking everything. So many elements and variables that you don't get "virtually". Awesome video!
So many happy memories of Gran Turismo!
Paul McGuire lol can`t even count how many times I`ve lost control at corckscrew,so many nerves were lost there!
Sasa Curcija yeah it was a nightmare but epic when you nailed it!
was more like a fail or fly situation
Corkscrew is hard yes, but man when the license requires you to pass with Dodge Viper is a fucking nightmare going through the corkscrew. But man the tears of joy of my brothers when we pass that license.
Paul M it jumps! and it hits!
As being one who's been on every turn mentioned in this video - it is ONE HELL OF A RIDE. The rush of adrenaline experienced is like no other.
what about getting shot at
acid3129 thats more like fear...not the same as this!
acid3129
lol
Carmi Werner its still adrenaline rushing through your system
Ahah I remember when I was playing Gran Turismo 4 on my PS2, I'd often race on the Laguna Seca just to experiment that corner :)
I remember a Top Gear episode where Jeremy set a lap time in an NSX on Gran Turismo then tried to set the same lap in real life. He said the corkscrew was so scary because you can’t see over the best. Scary.
I grew up in Carmel..went to many races..Sunoco Javeline...Can Am..Mark Donahue...Porsche 917....Kenny Robert's TZ 750....so many races. My father took me On The old configuration of the course with the big straight away, In a 1965 El Camino... The corkscrew was always a magnet for me! My wife got me the skip Barber class, in the Mazda miata... I finally got do The corkscrew..2 40 minute sessions... It was a dream come true... His helped when my friend's father was president of SCRAMP!!! :)
So happy to call this my backyard, literally live miles from the track. During motogp you can hear the beautiful sounds of engines roaring.
So damn lucky
0:44 "where else in the world can you find a corner with such a drop from the top of the corner to the exit?"
Answer: the dipper at Bathurst. Only difference is; corkscrew has sand traps and run-off areas, the dipper has concrete walls and no run-off areas.
THANKYOU - Bathurst needs more of a mention!
According to wikipedia it no longer exists "the Dipper (the third corner in the sequence), is a sharp left hand
corner so named because, before safety changes were made, there was a
dip in the road surface and a steep drop not far from the edge of the
road, and many cars were able to get two wheels off of the ground."
The thing about the corkscrew is that you approach it on a climb. In a low-slung race car, you really are driving-while-blind (thx ZZ) through part of it. And the altitude change is much more sudden.
You guys need to watch the TT races.
i always remember its there but forget that its coming up
That kicked ass.
My stomach dropped riding with an instructor there a few years ago! It was terrific!
Jeff Karpinski I can't wait to take my motorcycle around it! It's gonna be SCARY!!! The first time especially!
Hardest part of the turn is compressing the braking zone into short area once you crest. Otherwise, getting through the corner is just fun. Turn 6 and 9 are tougher to judge speed wise I think, and more critical for good track times.
I would love to drive on Laguna Seca just for The Corkscrew. Looks crazy.
These are great videos! I miss the days when /DRIVE was cranking out great content right and left. Good times...
I drove at Laguna Seca and did the corkscrew. I will admit I am not saavy on the various tracks and so was not ready for what this really was. Holy crap! That turn was narley. It is blind drop off to the left, then angled to the right with an immediate HARD turn to the left and again quickly to the right. Mind you, you are flying downhill for these turns. LOL--with quite a few spectators watching to see if you become a victim/statistic of the famous Corkscrew :)
I've had the privilege of riding this course .. it's the intro into the corkscrew that gets everyone....
My take away; PS2 makes me feel like I've been there; at Laguna and Torey Pines. I will always love this track and that course.
Love listening to those engines roar
I remember setting in the Corkscrew the first year Moto GP came back to the states! Seeing Hayden tear through there on the 211V was AWESOME..Then I finally did a track day there theres no other turn like that on earth.
2nd only to the Nurburgring for my all-time favorite circuits but the only track that I have ever seen in person! I spent a solid hour watching the Formula Junior Coopers and Lotus' as well as the vintage GT Class cars like the 250 GT Berlinetta SWB snake through the Corkscrew at the Rolex PreReunion. Just seeing the legendary 787b, Porsche LMP cars, and countless Ferraris is reason enough to go back or to make the pilgrimage for any enthusiasts if they haven't already. I love racing and hot lapping Laguna Seca in Forza and hope to someday drive it in real life.
Oh man to those people "Bring back Chris Harris on Cars". They're having a fucking break right now, they're just humans too. Have some patience.
please bring back Chris Harris on cars now!!!! :(
they've sold their souls to NBC, no Chris Harris anymore ;-)
Yep, those whining noobs driving me crazy. Where is this, where is that. Uaaaaaaa :)
***** Bruteskitwentyone wrote on another video.
Chris has been busy racing Porsche cup at Le Mans, and then with Aston Martin at the Nurburgring 24 hours. I'm sure we'll see a video for at least one of those.
They have just simple break, because they are not machines, and they deserve it. Period.
***** Selfish people like you doesn't deserve anything.
Drive makes some very impressive videos. High production value, solid technically, fun to watch...
Legendary corner and track, you can sense the emotion through these guys's words.
Woohoo! I drove here for the first time today, which has been a dream of mine for many years. It's a blast.
What other tracks have corner like this?
The dipper at Bathurst anyone?
Not quite sure the drop is as dramatic.
Rode a bicycle race on that course. (A pre-cursor to Sea Otter.)
I’ve also driven it several times in regular cars in support of bike races. Each time, I felt a pang of guilt for all those true Motorsport fans and gamers who would give up a body part for the chance to be on the course. It’s a blast.
If I ever get over to the US love to do a track day here and at Watkins Glen...
Where else has a drop like that? MT PANORAMA, BATHURST!
In SW WA there is a country road that is nearly IDENTICAL to the Corkscrew. On the backside of Cedar's Golf Course just outside Battle Ground, WA. To be clear, it's the road directly on the West side (running North/South) of the aforementioned golf course if you ever find yourself in the PDX/Vancouver area. Just watch for oncoming traffic as it's just a country road.
one off the favorite corners in the world!!
Can't talk the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca without mentioning Alex Zinardi's pass in 1996. One of the ballsiest moves in ever!
nice camera views
Raidillion is my favourite rising sequence and the corkscrew is my favourite decending sequence. My dream track would have both
My favorite place to watch the races was under the shade of the trees at turn 8. LS is a beautiful course.
I would love a track day there....
I was upshifting out of this corner today with the Alfa club. it's scary taking a hand off the wheel when the wall seems so close!
There is a video of Marc Gene taking one of the good F1 ferrari (V10 normally aspirated) around this track on youtube. It's better than watching a current F1 race.. You really get that roller coaster ride feeling watching it..
The beauty of doing the Corkscrew on a videogame is that you dont have the laws of gravity nearly killing you (or successfully) while doing it.
Fantastic corner on a great track! The slow mo' footage is sweet!
In this "S", Alex Zanardi with cars and then Valentino Rossi with motorcycles, taught everyone how to deal with it. One of the Hall of Fame curves!!
Crashing all the time in Gran Turismo 2, Laguna Seca in every other game just leaves me premeditated for when the real thing happens... One can dream!
You say there's nothing like it but isn't The Esses into The Dipper at Bathurst just as steep?
I'm not sure but I think there's more elevation drop at Bathurst, but it happens over a longer length of track, I don't think it has any section as steep in one corner as the corkscrew.
Looking at old YTube clips, it seems as if Bathurst has been smoothed out a bit over the years. In some of the early films it looks really precarious.
I doubt it, the top average speed around Bathurst in a V8 Supercar is about 100mph dead while I think the best saloons at Laguna manage just over 80mph. Open-wheelers and 4wd hypercars at Laguna will go faster but they would too at Bathurst.
Bathurst is a very fast track so, comparing like with like (check out Button in an F1 car at Bathurst) I think Bathurst is every bit as challenging as Laguna.
It use to be steep at Bathurst
Where else, Bathurst, Australia - The Dipper. Almost the same but with concrete walls on both sides. Corkscrew is still awsome.
Great footage and music... really enjoyed it....
Awesome, awesome shots on the slow motion camera!
This was excellent.
I wish I could once just once visit that race track and feel the corkscrew...sucks to live so far away with no visa xD
Tje corkscrew turn it's theain reason laguna seca is my mostfavorite track of them all...
Love it or hate it, there is no other corner like it in the world.
I would have loved to see a few cockpit shots, to get a feel how you just do not see the track when you are in the corkscrew.
Eau Rouge and The Corkscrew, arguably the Best Corners in all of Racing!
Agreed, and I would throw the Chase in there as well (but, then again, it is a chicane, so...).
That corner looks horrifying on a laptop monitor so I can only imagine being in the driver's seat. #bucketlist
What was the music during the end sequence? It was great!
I have to agree; it does seem a lot harder than in video games!
i love this track, for its corner
there is a hill at the top of its crest so its super hard to brake on...very very easy to get it wrong before you even get into the corner
Bucket list
MOMO's are the best!
What is this song playing throughout it's amazing
Turn left, aim at the oak tree, and flick right. It's fun!
In GTA Online’s creator mode I make racetracks like this, but Rockstsr only gives me 200 props to make the tracks.
Bring back Chris Harris on cars please
My MotoGP program says it's a 5 story drop. I just rode it on Tuesday. Not sure if it's 3 or 5. Doesn't matter I guess. :)
778
It feels like a "OH F*** I'M GONNA DIE!" drop.
TheSUNGlassKid Nah not on a motorcycle anyway :)
+TheSUNGlassKid
on a bicycle climbing up the corkscrew, its more of a "fuck... I wanna vomit" sort of feel.
what is scary and fun decending in a car or motorcycle is a short stretch of misery on a bicycle.
yes, I have climbed the corkscrew on a mountan bike, racing with a bunch of other lycra clad morons.
the sea otter classic mountain bike race starts and finishes on the track at laguna seca.
you should do a /driver's eye on the corkscrew
in the games i allw
ays break until the 3rd sign that tells u the corner comes. cause that is eactly 2 seconds till the steep cornering comes its brilliant
Great vid, still waiting on your LaFerrari review
Bring back Leo.
where are the regular shows?
Motor Trend and now Drive ... why?
Great feature!
Wow didn't realize there was that big of a drop. It's a lot less on the crew 2
I loooove the soundtrack
Great music, what was it?
that corner would be a lot of fun in my volvo 850
Reminds me of Rossi and Stoner battling back in 2008.
drop to 15kmh super hard left turn hard brake super hard right turn gas.
this corner in gran turismo got me into racing growing up lol.
Casanova and Savelli at Mugello!
Love this track!
This I've raced a thousand times in Forza one..on the old XBox
Why are the colors on all your videos except /INSIDE so matte? There's like no shine in this video. Other than that this is perfection.
solid video.
Awesome
I really liked this video
One day I'll drive on that track.
This turn always gets me in Forza. 😂 I can't get slow enough to stay inside the track.
the corkscrew is mad..but its no dipper at Bathurst!...narrow the track and add walls then find out how tough it is!
MOMO PRODUCT PLACEMENT!
i'm ok with it
I have been down the corkscrew many times.
Are Pratt and Miller still the people making the C7 race car? I know they did all the work on the C6, but idk about the Stingray.
Yes, Pratt and Miller are still building the Corvette race cars.
Can you guys go to Mospot already!!!
Remember the times, when Drive had videos daily? yeah...
Your gay
Ah, Bathurst has the dipper and has been around a lot longer than Laguna Seca, but I guess it’s not American so doesn’t count right?
I would love to try that one day
Been into racing games for years, Gran Turismo, Forza - no matter what the game or the car I can never get the corkscrew right!
I would do the unimaginable for GT3 Cup on that track - Spa too.
that was amazing
What's the music for this called?
i saw the heading and automatically thought that sounds like Laguna seca.
Very, very few corners compare to the Corkscrew. Eau Rouge is definitely comparable, but it's essentially run the other way around, so a little easier (you're going up, not down).
I would say that Corkscrew was easier than Eau Rouge. I haven't driven Laguna but I have Spa and the speed through Eau Rouge is amazing. U need big balls to drive flat out there! On the subject of Spa; Pouhon is another great corner particularly given the camber. P.S. BRING BACK CHRIS!
David Britton I've not driven either (though I'd love to), but certainly the first part of Eau Rouge is easier as you can actually see the corner! No question that you need massive balls and a great car to do that corner flat though.
***** I know what you mean. It is handy to see what you are driving into! Don't forget though that the top of Raidillon is blind as well, although i appreciate you are not having to brake into it. For me though it's the much higher speed through the corner which is why i think that Raidillon is more of a challenge. I had a wicked time there!
Can't believe you didn't include some MotoGP footage in that, If you think cars look good going through it then watching MotoGP with riders overtaking midway through and down will blow you away.
Good stuff!
It would be interesting running Laguna Seca in reverse. Probably not very safe for a race, maybe time trials?
