    I am a diehard competitive revolver shooter, in USPSA, ICORE, Speed Steel. I use a S&W, model 929, 9mm. That said, I agree with your logic. The only thing worse than a miss, is a slow miss. Big boomer revolvers are challenging to shoot accurately, period. But, to shoot fast and accurately, very challenging. That said, good bullet construction, out of a round you can shoot accurately and fast, would be my first choice every time.

    I live, work, and play in grizzly country. I am in Flathead Valley, 20 minutes from Glacier National Park. Ruger revolvers and Glock 10mms are what the locals carry around here. I carry a Glock 20 with a white light in a Hill People Gear Kit Bag V2. But I don't carry it for its capacity. I've seen grizzlies in the wild and I know that no handgun is going to feel adequate staring down a handgun. I also know that a charging grizzly is coming at you at 40 mph. That is just under 60 fps. That means a grizzly can cover 50 yards in about 2.5 seconds. I can't imagine a situation where I would be able to draw any handgun and get more than two or three rounds off. Are these guys in Alaska just blasting away at bears from like 100 yards? Maybe the bears in MT are faster? If you are hiking and hear a crash and a bear fifty yards away is charging down the hill at you, he will be on top of you in 3 seconds. It is going to take you about half of that time to get your pistol out of its holster and oriented in the right direction, and then you have a second or so to steady your nerves, aim, and put two, maybe three aimed rounds on target. If you get any more rounds than that off, you're spraying and praying, not aiming, and you can't miss fast enough to save your life. A grizzly can run down an elk. There has been cases of ranchers in MT losing horses to grizzlies. Carry what you can shoot well, but don't harbor any notions that 15 rounds in the magazine is going to do what 6 rounds in the cylinder won't. Unless you start blasting while the bear is a hundred yards away, or before it is actually committed to attacking you, you're not going to get more than a few rounds off.

      100% YES. Truth. You get 3 shots if you are lucky on a charging bear. 4th shot is while he is eating your off-hand arm. Use most powerful gun that you can get off 3 shots in 4 seconds. If that is 9mm, then that is what you use. Most folks can't get off 2 shots with 41, 44, 454, 460, 500, etc... in that timeframe. It is a shame that they are so arrogant that they may die to their pride.

      @@thorman944 Not just that, you are very likely to get tackled by that bear. In such intimate quarters, a short barreled revolver is king. Much easier to maneuver and get a good shot off while the bear is on top of you. In mentally preparing myself for a bear attack, I already accepted that I will probably end up on the ground and won't come out unscathed.

    I dunno'. I've hunted a lot of YUGE hog with my 10mm's. It does the job. But I've also hunted em' with a 44 mag and a 454 Casull. The 10mm *USUALLY* puts em' down with one shot. Sometimes they do run a ways before dropping. The 44 has always worked on the first shot. Sometimes they flop about but they don't go more than a few feet. The 454 puts em' down really fast and really hard. They just drop. I assume Alaskan Bears are even tougher.

      But hunting is different then defending from an angry puffed up charging bear, and the adrenaline dump you will most likely have and if that first round doesn’t land, the recoil and slow speed to follow up a second round maybe a deciding factor in life or death.
      So many want to carry like a 460 or 500 magnum, my challenge, unload both of those revolvers as fast as you can. Same with the .454 even. A too fast double tap can cause the gun to hit you or even the muzzle facing you and your trigger finger accidently squeezing another round by impulse and muscle.
      There is a girl in Georgia who killed herself with a 500 magnum because the gun recoiled back so far it caused her finger to squeeze the trigger again instantly with the muzzle at her head. She was the only person supposedly ever killed by that gun because her idiot bf thought it was cool for that to be her first gun to shoot.
      But even so, that recoil is still almost as close as she experienced with anyone unless you have mechanic wrists with tons of grip strength and control.
      15 rds of 10mm in a glock 20, that can also run 40s&w if needed for even more recoil sensitive shooters may be better.
      Plus the ability to reload a semi auto with a mag beats the revolver of that size any day.
      And it’s harder to reload a revolver without looking at it under duress then it is for a semi
      Auto, when your eyes should remain on the threat. Chances are your hands will be shaking and trying to reload a revolver with shaking hands and eyes on target up your chances of dropping rounds.

      @Dave Alexander IM confused - if one gun by design allows the shooter to fire rounds quicker and easier regardless of circumstance, wouldn't you get more rounds off with the glock? I mean if a bear is charging and all I am worried about is defense, wouldn't I want to strike as much of a balance between rate of fire, ease of use, and damage per shot as possible? Obviously there are certain circumstances where regardless of your firearm you may only get one or two shots, but does the added damage of a 454 make up for the added difficulty of use?

    10mm, 140gr at 1500fps = 699m/e
    454Casull, 250gr at 1700 = 1540m/e
    Like you said, in a single shot battle no comparison but...
    10mm, 699 x 16 = 11184 pound ft of “potential” energy on target
    454Casull, 1540 x 6 = 9240 potential energy...

    • @danemaui8259
      @danemaui8259 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The logic is there. Higher capacity and follow-up shots is a good argument. But another argument would be of two things. One being that the average soldier is using a sidearm within 25 ft. A trained soldier, or even a trained civilian doesn't shoot to scare, they shoot to kill. So if you're a skilled soldier or a skilled civilian, you shoot to kill. That means one bullet one kill. And within 25 ft that's easy to do. With a 9mm or a 45 auto. Second, it's the practicality of logistics. If you can ship two times the amount of cartridges because they weigh half the amount (9 mm 115 grain versus 45 auto 230 grain) to your soldiers wherever they may need the ammo, then logistically that's going to make more sense. Second, the military has people of all shapes and sizes that are soldiers. That includes their hand sizes, muscles in their hands, muscles in their arms, ect. With the 9mm caliber is a one size fits all. It's for people who have small hands that are weak, and for people who have large hands that are strong. It's not too large of a bullet, and not too small of a bullet either. Hence the reason the army adopted it. Same reason the United States uses 556 NATO. Most large countries in the world don't, they use very large bullets in their rifles, on an average three times the size. But our military uses the 556 because it's effective and very practical. Trust me, if everybody in the military was 6 ft 3, weighed 210 lb, and had large hands and feet, the soldiers would all be carrying double stacked 10 mm pistols. Also there's the spray and pray crowd. Some people, but not all, only feel secure with the high capacity pistols because they're not a very good shot. So if the s*** goes down they're going to fire a lot of bullets, and hopefully one of them hits. That's pretty much every shooting, in every major city, every day. My point being, law enforcement, military, federal agencies, ect, they're making decisions not based off of each individual soldier or officer, they're making decisions based off of the whole. That will benefit the majority of them, it will not benefit all of them. For example the military used the Beretta for a long time. I can't stand that thing. It's beautiful and iconic and I was really excited to shoot it until I did. Awful. Never felt a trigger that long in my entire life. If I was in the military, that would have sucked being my sidearm. While there's thousands of other people that love the Beretta, and swear by it, military or not.

    I’ve never been around bears but in any kind of self-defense situation the gun you can shoot best with seems to be the smart choice. No point in having the hand cannon if you can’t hit anything with it.
    Maybe it’s a question of getting to the point where you’re shooting is excellent. I’ve seen videos of Jerry Miculek shooting six rounds of .44 with blinding speed and accuracy. He’s a special case but it proves it’s possible. Shots on target is key. If you’re a darn sight better with the 10mm it’s a no brainer.

Ive heard of bears getting shot even in the face with 45s multiple times & kept coming. So yes, of course, placement & what works best for you matters but in this case proper appropriate caliber makes all the difference. With high grain and stopping power with 16 rounds to let off.... I’d feel well confident with my 10mm in case of Mr. Grizzly coming at me! 300 grain hard cast at over 1000’ per second will crack skulls and stop anything!! 10mm is a very under estimated cartridge and will stop anything!!

It's not that hard because the Glock 20 is a very smooth gun to shoot. With some focused training, I could probably do it under 3. It’s only a single stack (8+1 in the chamber ) but I think that’s plenty enough for where I’m at in black bear country in northern Michigan. I have some Grizzly 180 JHP moving along at 1400 fps that I use for whitetail hunting, and I have some Buffalo Bore 220 grain hardcast for bear protection that generate over 730 ft lbs muzzle energy . The 6.2” barrel accomplishes its job of getting everything out of the ammo . The pistol cycles anything I feed it . The trigger is Superb ! The action is smooth as butter . My $450 used Taurus model 66 357 shoots Buffalo Bore 180 hardcast lead bullets at 800+ lbs/ft energy from it's 6" barrel. that is only about 10% more ME from a gun with less recoil and faster followup shots. You will not get to shot 5 or 6 from a charging bear, so magazine capacity is moot. Plus, enjoy being deprived of your $2k gun for 2 years while it sits in a zip-loc bag with snow, rain, ice, blood, sweat, tears, gunpowder on it before you get it back after you have to use it to protect yourself. My cheapo Taurus is a model that is an exact copy of same year S&W and sports performance center hammer, trigger, springs, etc... so my DA trigger is similar to your Dan Wesson and my SA trigger is better. 10mm performance is a lie!

    I too live in bear county and have both griz and blackies on my land. I've never had to shoot one, but their presence encouraged me to carry either a 44 Magnum or a 10mm for the same reasons you outlined. I've owned a Glock 20 for thirteen years, but it wasn't until I acquired a 20SF in 2011 that I switched to 10mm for bear protection. Since then I've upgraded the pistol with a 6" barrel, frame and grip modifications, and a light. I've tested a variety of ammo brands and found Buffalo Bore to be the hottest. Their 200 grain FMJ flat nose round chronographed at an average velocity of 1172 FPS out of the 5" barrel and 1256 FPS out of the 6" barrel. Their 220 grain hard cast flat nose bullet averaged 1150 FPS out of the 5" barrel. By comparison, Blazer 200 grain truncated FMJ only averaged 996 from the same barrel, while Freedom Munitions reloaded 180 grain flat metal jacket averaged 1041 FPS and Miwall 180 grain JHP ammo averaged 1101 FPS. I am hesitant to use anything other than the heaviest FMJ or hard cast bullets for bear defense. With bruins I believe deep penetration is critical and head shots are paramount. On animals this large expansion is practically irrelevant when your goal is to stop a charge. Because of the notable improvement in velocity from the 6" barrel, I recently acquired a Glock 40 and some night sights. I expect the slightly heaver pistol to reduce the Buffalo Bore recoil a bit, but have yet to run any comparison tests. I've also decided to try 460 Rowland, though this means going to a lower magazine capacity. I'll have to determine if the increased power level warrants the recoil.

      Comparatively, the Buffalo Bore 357 HardCast ammo that I use is also 180 grains but travels at 1400 - 1600fps depending on the 4" to 6" barreled revolver that I carry. Same Bullet weight but 300 to 400fps faster. 10mm is a joke considering that you will not get the 6th or more round fired in a bear attack. Those extra rounds in your magazine are just extra weight that will slow you down. I'm just trying to be realistic. You can get the same recoil from a hot 10mm from a hot 357 that is traveling faster with same bullet weight for more energy delivered to target. 10mm is the worst 'lie' that has been inflicted on the firearms community.

    • @Paladin1873
      @Paladin1873 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thorman944 10mm is very popular around here and in Alaska. It is not a joke, nor is it a lie. I do not consider it a powerhouse, for it has ballistic performance on par with the 357 Magnum. The heaviest 357 factory load I've used so far is the HSM 180 grain hard cast lead Bear Load that I've clocked at 1000 FPS out of 4" revolver and 1400 FPS out of a 16" carbine. As for recoil, I'd rate the 357 heavier, but it really depends of the weight of the handgun I use. I haven't tried the Buffalo Bore 357 loads, so I can't comment on them. I have used 44 Magnum and 460 Rowland, but both produce stout recoil. I see no disadvantage in having more rounds than you are likely to get off, but I do see a disadvantage in having too few.

    "Chubon’s first reaction was to retrieve Uptain’s Glock from the nearby gear pile, but he didn’t know how to function the slide on the top of the firearm that chambers a bullet.
    “Chubon stated that he could not fire the handgun initially because of the bears’ close proximity to Uptain,” the report analysis says, “fearing he would unintentionally shoot Uptain.”
    The Floridian client also told investigators he could “not remember if he attempted to pull the trigger.”
    When the sow diverted its attack to Chubon he tried to throw the gun to the man who knew how to use it. But the firearm fell short of Uptain and no longer contained the 15-round magazine of 10-millimeter full-metal-jacketed bullets that Chubon “inadvertently ejected” while trying to disengage the safety. The handgun was otherwise functional, Teton County Sheriff’s Office determined after an analysis."

    After experiencing extraction issues with a g19, I wouldn't be 100% confident carrying a glock 10mm for bear protection. The g19 didn't have any malfunctions prior to 1000 rounds, but what if 1,001 is the round that counts? And clearing a malfunction isn't something I'd wanna do in 5-6 second window. Most verified bear attacks that were thwarted, the shooter typically gets off maybe 5-6 rounds before the bear is in striking distance, making reloading a non issue. Once the bear is up on you, I highly doubt you'll be in control of your firearm any longer.
    Making reliability and power my first 2 concerns.

    I love my S&W N frame revolvers and love having control of my brass without the fruitless searches and not getting all of them like with my pistols. The main thing is any worthwhile endeavor in the outdoors always takes me past dark to get back from. A modern pistol with a light is a game changer. There may eventually be an even better round than the 10mm, but I have a hard time believing it could be so balanced between effectiveness, controllability and capacity. The big Glock just doesn’t fit my hand from the length of the grip to the finger notches. My XDM does!

    To each their own. Any magnum kicks. Anything shot enough times will stop eventually, but for me I like it. I like loading it with a couple 45 long colts followed by the double tap 400 grain, and hand to a friend and record. Yes they know it’s coming, but it doesn’t matter. The reaction is always the same. They hand it right back😂

    At what distance are you gonna start shooting at the bear? I don’t think you can empty a glock 40 accurately enough to get the effect of 15 +1 rounds in the kill zone before he’s on top of you, I want a 305 or 340 gr hardcast bullet instead of a 200 or 220 gr that’s why guides use the 45-70

    Getting rounds off quickly, is no where near as important as accuracy is!
    Especially where good hits count. One, two or three good vital hits is way better than multiple inaccurate shots.
    If a bear is on a full charge, just "spraying and praying" is only hopeful at best. Taking just a little more time (although how unnerving it might be) but get good vital hits with a powerful 454 round would be more desirable!

    Well, I'm not in Alaska bur hiked in the mountains of Southern California where we have brown bears and others. I have several 10mm. I will bring my Glock 20 and my S&W 500.
    My S&W is loaded with a 750 grain hard cast lead with a muzzle velocity in excess of 1400 fps. My goto gun is the S&W 500. If I'm not to scared and my shot placement is good, it's a 1 shot 1 kill. But if I blow through the ammo in the Smith I would go to my backup Glock 20 loaded with Buffalo Bore hard cast lead.

    There's a reason we have weight divisions in Boxing and MMA.
    People should shoot both to appreciate the difference. I'll take the 454 revolver that's built for big game hunting when my life is on the line.. Unquestionable power and penetration. Accurate follow up shots are not that hard but you need to practice. I have a shoulder rig that makes the Super Redhawk comfortable to carry.
    Black bear and cougar country I'd happily carry the 10mm but if you've ever actually seen a brown bear close up you'd understand the bigger is better argument.

    • @texasbeast239
      @texasbeast239 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not ideal because of the short barrel and decreased velocity. You probably should go for a fullsize G20 M or G40 to get a longer barrel and greater penetration.
      But if that G29 fits your hand, it's probably a dynamite EDC gun.

  • @patrickjehlen1018

    I also own both guns like yours and the 10mm is my woodcutting companion. Don't think you could go wrong with either provided you hit the sweet spot. On one hand I like the thought of being able to full auto at a bear in the face at arms reach but also a 360gr HC really flat point going through him 5 or 6 feet is also a good thing. One finally note, I own a S&W 329 which weight about 30ozs. It's a joy to carry but I HATE shooting it with heavy loads!! PS Also own a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 480 Ruger with a 410gr HC at about 1200fps. Should do fine on.................anything.

    • @thorman944
      @thorman944 ปีที่แล้ว

      why the .480? using non- +p loads, I get 1050 to 1140 lbs/ft from my 41 mag Ruger Redhawk depending on the ammo. Having to jump to a 'boutique cartridge' to get marginal more effectiveness is silly. I spend $25.00 for 20 rounds ($1.25/full power round) in 41Mag. How much does your 480 Ruger cost every trigger pull?
