  • The Minds Wide Open Critical and Creative Thinking Learning Continuum is based closely on the CCT Capability document released by The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.
The Minds Wide Open CCT Continuum is a valuable tool that primary schools can use to:
    * Identify and communicate clear learning goals for students
    * Determine ‘where to next’ when planning for teaching
    * Track and monitor student progress from Kindergarten to Year 6
    * And act as a common reference point for a whole school approach to teaching CCT.
The original learning continuum produced by ACARA has four “elements” - Inquiring, Analysing, Generating Ideas and Reflecting. The Minds Wide Open version re-organises these into six strands to better illustrate the kinds of thinking processes that are typically used when decision making, problem solving and designing.
    The revised strands are:
     FACT-FINDING …
     GENERATING IDEAS …
     JUDGING IDEAS …
     PLANNING …
     PRODUCING …
     REFLECTING …
The four ‘Levels’ bands represent milestones of achievement expected of a typical student at particular stages. Each level is composed of a number of ‘markers’ or ‘descriptors’ which are clustered and matched with their relevant strand. These markers (drawn directly from the Australian Curriculum) are designed to assist teachers to establish learning goals, to plan for explicit teaching, and to pitch lessons at an appropriate level for their students.
Teachers can also refer to the markers to track and monitor student progress. Using a range of evidence such as observations, work samples and interactions with students, teachers can assess for learning and determine where students are currently placed on the continuum.
The continuum also supports teachers to provide feedback to their students about progress in CCT and to inform them of the skills they need to develop to move along the learning sequence. Also, a student’s progress can be articulated to a parent by using the language from the continuum (for example, in report comments).
For students to be successful they need to think critically and creatively across all of the learning areas. CCT is not a separate subject but rather permeates all subjects. The Minds Wide Open Critical and Creative Thinking Learning Continuum is useful for extracting learning goals that can be included in any program, in any lesson, in any subject area.
