The spirit of PMG is alive and very well. Oh my god, the opening bass intro to the piano playing to the guitar synth solo, the orchestrations, everything about this piece just screams pure magic to the point that i'm actually crying with tears of joy while i'm listening and taking all of it in. God bless you Pat Metheny and thank you so much for this beautiful gift.
Absolutely - couldn't agree more. That opening bass, from Ron Carter, and then the piano (Gwilym Simcock), it is an opening that (my) dreams are made of. And a total bolt of emotion. Lean back, close your eyes, and absorb.
@@elscooter i couldn't agree with you, it's one of those songs that you just sit there and take all of the magic in. The bass player on this album isn't Ron Carter, its the lovely and very talented Linda May Han Oh.
I was in my car driving to work listening to Real Jazz and they played several PMG and Lyle tracks in a row. I had to pull over. I was so gutted I couldn't drive. I'm about the same age as these guys, first heard them live around 1979. They've been a part of most of my life. This hurts. This track is beautiful. Like the others posted from this album. This helps. Thanks Pat for posting. I cant imagine how you feel.
Yet at the same time, I felt his absence ... Pat plays with so many great musicians, but there is something about Lyle’s ‘spontaneous arrangements’ underneath Pat’s guitar synth solos that is like nothing else. Now excuse me while I cue up ‘Slink’ again ... :)
@@txa1265 I agree. This album is really about Pat and his current collaborators, and it's absolutely wonderful what they all did. This sounds like pure Pat Metheny. But Lyle did have an impact here. It's not in the sound or the arrangement, but it's in how the composition and arrangement tells a dramatic story. Lyle did that on a level that no other composer in jazz has ever done. That's what Lyle brought to the PMG, and Pat hasn't forgotten that.
I sincerely feel bad for people that will never get to listen to Pat Metheny. I'm glad by brother introduced me to PMGs Offramp at the age of 14. I thank my brother all the time.
I wonder if the day will ever come when that signature Pat Metheny sound 2:43 no longer has the hypnotic effect on me that it does? I doubt it, not after 40 years. THANK YOU PAT!
RIP Lyle Mays. The selflessness of a jazz giant, and the collaboration with Metheny was top notch. I mean I love Zawinul/Shorter Bird/Dizzy Hellborg/Lane McLaughlin/Hussain. But Metheny/Mays lasted longer.
With my deepest respect to the whole work on this tune, but man.... that bass is just out of this world. Linda May Han Oh... she is just incredible and such a talent. Wow..... great for me that I was able to follow her all throughout this tune is really incredible how she handles effortless the contra-bass
This songs so grooving. The bass part that player loops for some parts of song is not as easy as it sounds took me about 10 minutes to get perfect on an acoustic/ electric bass plucking like an upright on last fret
While I am thoroughly enjoying this (Thank you Pat), I had no idea that Lyle Mays passed on, until I read the comments here. It's a real shame. I was so hoping to see PMG unite just one more time. There was always something special about how Lyle tickled the ivories. To this day, I still find myself replaying that short, soft, simple piano solo from "Here to Stay" from the album "We Live Here". There's just something about it that makes me gravitate to it. Today will be a PMG Music day, for the entire group, but especially for Lyle. Rest in Peace Mr. Mays.
On reading your comment, I listened to that piano solo in "Here to Stay." I forgot how fantastic that part was. Lyle just seems to be strongly expressing himself. Love the sequenced/delayed percussion. Listening again...that solo is magic.
My sentiments exactly. I'm still trying to deal with Kobe and then I ran into the news about Lyle. I was afraid they were going to wait too long....I can"t believe it's been 15 years since The Way Up.
Listening to Pat's music is like having a mystical experience that can warm your soul in an increasingly crazy world. This kind of music gives me every time I listen to it a deep sense of well-being, peace and love which is the true meaning of our own life
Saw Pat with his new group for 2nd time , in March 20 in Perth Oz -he expressed his overwhelming sadness at Lyle's passing - they must have been like brothers all this time -what a bond they had and created fantastic music together . Will remember Lylle forever in his own music as well as part of PMG .PAT moves on unselfishly nurturing young talent and developing new music. His talent is boundless. R I P Lyle .DJEJ
When we saw Pat in Sydney on 7 March, I don’t recall him mentioning anything. I thought perhaps he did not want it to take away our focus from the fantastic musicians who were with him but seeing your comment, perhaps the loss was too raw
Music that transcends time and place, a calming therapy. I've been listening to his brilliance since 1978 and it never wears on me. Lyle you will be missed!
The perfect track to remember Lyle Mays by. There's so much classic PMG DNA in this track, a feel of Are You Going With Me? at quicker tempo, a melody that would fit perfect on a Speaking of Now track and have to say the bass on this track on its own is worth the entrance fee, instantly addictive!!! As I say on all my Pat comments I've been a fan since 1984 and proud of it, Pat provides the soundtrack to my life.
Beautiful new compositions! The orchestral arrangements & recording here harken back to “CTI Sound” of the 70’s/80’s heard on so many classic albums engineered by my late Uncle Rudy Van Gelder. CTI founder/producer Creed Taylor’s vision comes shining through, yet, in a modern context. As a musician and avid PM follower since ‘77, it amazes me how Pat continues to evolve, while using such elements from the past. I know an orchestra wasn’t originally planned here, yet it sounds organic & brings these gems to life! Upon each listen, new elements reveal themselves. Once again showing that Pat is not only a great composer & live performer, but continues to be a virtuoso at “using the studio as an instrument”. A gem!
Pat's trademarks are all here. Within a single style and tonality, this man abounds in endless variations. I didn't know that Lyle Mays' breath went away. He left a legacy that will live on.
Pat Metheny...one of the most brilliant and incredible musicians of our time, if not ever..Much appreciation for the musicians who have the opportunity to play with Pat, they help bring the music to life. Pat's music goes beyond categorization or definition.
SInce the very first tune from the upcoming album was released, I have the PMG feeling(sonically and like compositions/arrangements). It is a coincidence that Lyle's spirit left his body and we can sense it through the music.
This album really taps into the PMG period between Still life talking and Secret Story.. so many nuances in style, phrasing, and techniques... a throw back to the time..
Same River is a modern American Jazz classic. It's both enchanting and entracing at the same time. It's a piece of music that touches the heart and the soul. All the musicians on this song are fantastic and they seem to play amongst themselves in an effortless flow. The instrumentation, orchestration, cadence and texture of this piece of music is a masterpiece that evokes your innovative spirit and genius through the years Pat. The finishing touch is the atmosphere that you create with the Roland GR-300 in the solo, an atmosphere that in particular makes me very nostalgic. You are definitely a Master of Masters.
