      avoid technical descends. wehen i plan a rout in rain i try to ride up the more technical climb and go down the easier side.if you live in a less hilly area u can maybe avoid climbs and the resulting descends alltogether. additionally lower ur tryre pressure by maybe .5 or 1 bar. Ride shorter and harder to stay warm if you dont have expensive winter/rain clothing.

      I have ben riding in the rain more than my share.
      - the splash from the road is not sterile water: wear eye protection. Remember it when taking a sip from the bidon (have a protective shield on the nipple)
      - metal and paint are splippery, but the road itself can be like ice if it didn't rain for a while (remember Paris-Nice of this year)
      - have mud guard for you and the others
      - don't ride in puddle, you don't know what in it, nor where the bottom is.
      - wear a good rain jacket that will make you visible (the clear plastic ones are about the same colour as the sprays from motor vehicles, not a good choice)
      - don't get cold
      - enjoy the ride. I won't kill you and the next time you are having adverse condition you can remember that one you rode through.

    Better preparedness: Lights front and back, and wear brighter coloured clothing! Bad weather means darker conditions and decreased visibility especially in rain, so put every variable in your corner.

    • @xtra9996
      @xtra9996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Absolutely. And I can't understand that some big brands of cycling clothing offer black rain jackets. Visibility is everything in bad weather conditions!

    • @BrysonBlt
      @BrysonBlt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One-hundred percent agreed. Grab a good set of lights, not one of those dinky 20-dollar sets; just picked up a 750-lumen headlight and 130-lumen tail-light the other day in preparing for my Canadian autumn and winter riding commutes.

    • @BrysonBlt
      @BrysonBlt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@xtra9996 Agreed!! The larger brands need much more chartreuse yellow, green, and orange options for jackets; even just a red or light blue would be more than ideal over the largely dark colours offered.

      @Paul Wieringa Ahahahaha seriously though eh. Especially with all the pedestrians stepping out from in-between parked vehicles to jaywalk when it's dark out; who can see them when they're wearing a black jacket and black pants/leggings!?!?

    1. Full-coverage fenders with mudflaps to keep as much of the rain from flying off the ground and on to you/your shoes/your bike.
    2. Bright lights fore and aft, to see where you're going and to help others see you. Also, retroreflective tape, front and rear.
    3. Never ride through puddles. It may be skin deep, or it may be a wheel-swallowing, ride-ending pothole. Don't take chances on riding through them. How do you see them? See # 2.
    4. Anti-slip tape on the brake levers and possibly on the grips, to keep your fingers from slipping off at an inopportune moment. Look for 3M 50-mm-wide anti-slip tape, meant for bathtubs/showers.

    I commute 24/7 to an emergency services job all year ‘round ... it’s just about being prepared with kit options and I store options at home and at work so I’m not carrying a massive bag every day to cater for all weathers.
    I use a gravel bike as my commuter so I have wide, 38mm tyres with good treads for even the worst weathers and it worked brilliantly for me last winter, so will be going again this year and have invested in some baselayers for extra kit options.

      When doing day trips (~10 hours on the road) I prefer to avoid rainy days, too. No matter what kind of high tech gear in about 1 hour you get wet. Not soaking wet, but wet anyway, also from sweating. And if it rains in the morning on a colder day then you stay wet all day long. And when it rains you ride somewhat slower. So you might end up riding in the night at the end of the day. And then in the dark you ride slower too, even if it's dry. And then, from time to time you need to open up your saddle bags - that's when the water gets in even if they are rubber coated and really 100% water proof. And then, you can't use your Smartphone with GPS navigation properly if you wear gloves, or if there are drops of water on the screen - that's how water gets into your gloves. And you can't charge the Smartphone if the connectors get wet. And everything takes longer and, and, and... and it's just not fun :-(

    Once a time many years ago, I bought some fantastic tires with yellow side walls that matched my banana yellow paint job. They were narrow and slick, absolutely no grip at all, they looked fantastic and I didn't pay that much attention to the fact they weren't wet weather tires. I always had my tireds at 6 bar / 90psi.
    So I was flying down this hill towards a massive roundabout at about 35mph with the rain hammering it down so hard it was bouncing back up.
    Nothing was coming at the roundabout so instead of slowing down I just leaned into the turn and end up with the bike sliding way from me.
    Maybe I should have paid more attention to my tire choice, on the other hand the yellow side walls really looked amazing with my banana yellow frame.

    - Lol, no need for a rain jacket if you're in the tropics like me. I wasn't freezing, and actually quite comfy.
    - I would relube just before riding, and/or even consider bringing a tiny bottle of lube. My chain was squeaking an hour in and caused some chain suck.

I had a total brain fart after bombing a short descent and throwing my bike into a 90 degree corner with the road still quite damp. I shed lots of skin, ruined clothes, patched myself up rather than getting medical care, and after going to dr a week later discovering I had picked up 2 kinds of very very nasty bacteria which required 2 rounds of heavy antibiotics to get rid of. While riding in the wet and it’s still raining, cycling cap is a must. It really helps stop the water from dripping into your eyes. Yes, even when you’re wearing those oversized cycling sunglasses, water can still drips to your eyes. It happened to me and I was forced to stop riding because I just couldn’t see anything.

    Really big fan of your videos ... just one suggestion/wish/imploration : please please please ... when you switch to your "riding scenes" please dont quadruple the volume ... everytime the kids wake up, the dog gets scared and the tree in front of the house drops more leaves ... no need for late night disco-bursts. If you do that, I will even ride in the rain ... I promise.

    It depends on the rain. I don't ride if it is already raining, but I will go if it is drying or it could start to rain. When it rains in Orange County, California it is always a cold rain. If I was in Orange County, Florida, I'd probably have no problem riding in the rain most of the year.

    I use SKS raceblade pro XL (for 28mm tire) and currently have continental 4 season tires on my bike. Tire works well for NZ terrible roads. The raceblade is great because once adjusted to your bike frame they just clip on and off with ease. I've had them two years now and got them to stop wet road gravel being flicked up on drive train and top off saddle. I'm happy with them 👍

    Living on the Gulf Coast we get a lot of rain. I ride every day in every condition. Shoe covers are my favorite wet weather gear. I hate soggy feet. Velotoze makes the super easy cheap ones and they work. I rode in a recent tropical storm leftover. Riding in the rain makes you feel serious and I figure anyone that sees me out thinks I'm crazy so they'll give me more room. Lightning is the only thing that keeps me away....but I usually get stuck in it when I get caught out in a storm...

    I live in belgium.
    It is the worst weather ever in winter, because it does not snow but only rains. The most annoying thing in Belgium is the roads. When I tell you that there are bad roads in Belgium, you probably think of the cobblestones. Here we have worse asphalt roads than the cobbled roads in Paris-Roubaix!
    You just have to look up 'Belgische wegen' and you will come across our roads! They are terrible to cycle on. That is the reason that people here buy mtb's, not for the trails (we have few or none)
    but this is the real reason.
    Cyriel.

    you should try to looseand tight while braking you should only do this if you have proper balance and great confidence and this should come naturally after you master it. It is more affective then just squeezing your barke.

      like pumping the brakes in a car, tbh. I figure the same logic applies. Grip your brakes and you will hydroplane, at least with rims. So pump, gently and increase the amount of time you believe it will take to stop. Itʻs worked for me when I ride in the rain.
