2008 Smart Fortwo 451 84 BHP Lambda Probe and Exhaust Part 2 - Refitting

  • In this video I fit a new NTK the number 2 lambda probe/oxygen sensor following a fault code of P0141 - O2 sensor heater circuit bank 1 sensor 2. Additionally I reassemble the exhaust system with genuine Smart parts, fitting a new elbow, bolts, springs and sealing washers.
    This resolved the exhaust leak between the elbow and turbo that had been evident during the warm up phase.
    Finally, to reduce engine movement, I remove the split and worn front engine mount. Prior to fitting the genuine Smart replacement mount, I fit Powerflex red inserts to tighten the arrangement. What a difference this made, with no more driveline shunt, lurching and movement when accelerating, decelerating and at gear changes.
    For Part 1 - the removal , see • 2008 Smart Fortwo 451 ...

    Another pair of sensational videos there. Most engaging, the engine mounting info was most enlightening.
    Amazing how those elbow to silencer and elbow to turbo gaskets had deteriorated to virtually nothing, largely due to the dynamic loading, itself the result of that engine mounting failure. Well done all round.
    Cheers
    10/10 from me.

      Thank you, your comment is complimentary and motivational - I really appreciate it! I wonder how many people refit the old elbow, unaware that the inbuilt sealing ring has been worn away to nothing.

      You’re welcome, you do make great videos.
      I expect that a great many folks don’t realise the extent of the wear on these joints... and just refit them....
      I’ll be checking my 451 very soon to be sure I’m all in order in this regard. I’ve only had mine a week or so, it’s off the road for winter as it’s a true gem of a car. Keep up the high quality work, I’m sure a lot of folks appreciate it, but won’t always take the time to say so..
      cheers

    wish my 450 had that type of centre engine mount , the one on mine had to have just the rubber insert changed as it was all built into the rear subframe , changing it meant having to drop the rear subframe to access for renewal, even the rubber bush was hard to source , if I ever buy another Smart I will make sure it has the modified mount .

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 450 is indeed much more difficult to do. Have had that on my previous 450 smarts. Horrible job!

  • @Smart451-ut6df
    @Smart451-ut6df 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm blaming that engine mount on me needing a new £350 exhaust just to replace the broken flexi pipe section (71bhp MHD) that got moved around too much.
    I tried various places to get a repair section fitted but they didnt wish to (I purchased a nice quality 451 specific repair section thinking it would be fine), I kept my old exhaust in case its repairable in the future.
    I have the powerflex inserts on a new mount to help stop this happening again. The whole car feels more solid. But I would say the vibrations and noise increase are significant. Though definately worth it.
    Its also worth noting that powerflex dont supply the grease and dont reccomend using it now for the inserts, I enquired about this as my box didnt have any grease but the online instructions say to use grease, they have confirmed you are not meant to now and apparantly have updated their instructions for fitting.

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s interesting to know about the grease and I’m curious why. You do get used to the vibration. I’ve certainly noticed it more now I have functioning air con, when it is switched on. I guess it’s a trade off.

    • @Smart451-ut6df
      @Smart451-ut6df 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@autoknight747 I'm not sure why the change, I did notice that from the box as they come the inserts are quite greasy to touch, coated with something maybe, certainly not dry feeling.
      The powerflex bushes for the rest of the car are quite expensive so I'm not sure about getting them, I might just get new standard versions of everything else if required. Though I was tempted by the front anti-roll bar bushes as they might get some stress.

    Both the upstream and downstream Oxygen sensors can be cleaned in B12 carburator cleaner. BUT do not use any type of wire brush. Soak the very tip and clean with a toothbrush.

    Excellent video, very clear - keep them coming! I’ve recently bought the same car as yours (2008 84bhp) for my daughter to learn to drive in and going through the finding out what’s wrong with it phase so your content is well timed for me. Generally seems ok apart from a loud honking noise for about 10 to 15 seconds after starting the engine after which it runs ok. Any tips or thoughts welcomed!

I kind of enjoy ironing out all the problems, as you can see from my channel. 84bhp is the one to have. Could you maybe upload a video of it during the initial start up? I’d be interested to hear the sound.

      @@autoknight747 Yes, there’s a degree of sleuthing out the issues that is ok - so long as there’s nothing major. I’ll tag you when I have a decent example thanks.

      Thank you - I like to keep things organised! Most of the parts came from my MB/Smart dealer and some dealers in the UK sell on eBay which can enable a bit of a saving. The Lambda probe was from eBay but I’m very selective to ensure that the brand is reputable (ideally Germanic when possible) and that the seller is genuine. I don’t fit unbranded Chinese parts.

I am among those who, despite all its defects, appreciate the 451 84 Hp and spare no expense to fix it properly, in short exactly like you. Still doing well. They can’t really escape as they are sandwiched in there but I did have a look under there recently and all intact. I’m good with the slightly increased vibration, knowing that the engine is more ‘retained’ and my exhaust joints are not being stressed.

    I'm interested in that the exhaust on your 09 Smart Turbo 84bhpis a completely different set up to the exhaust on my 2014 Smart Turbo 84bhp. Both inlet & outlet are both on the same end on mine and there's a flexi joint joining the exhaust to the rest of the system. The flexi started to part company with the exhaust .... £450 from MB ... £130 for a pattern

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have the later arrangement with a flexi. The earlier system, as on mine, has no flexi pipe and the catalytic converter is built into the silencer. The later system (to meet different emission regulations) has a separate cat and then a silencer with flexi section, the braiding of which can fail, along with inner structure.
