Fitzcarraldo was supposed to be jovial and innocent and would be transformed by the experience. Mick Jagger's character was supposed to go insane and stay with the indians. That character was removed and Kinski brought a completely different interpretation. The boat became the protagonist.
Kinski was a horrible, despicable man. But I can separate art and person. What a performance. It's my favorite performance on film maybe tied with John Cazale and Al Pacino in Godfather 2. It is mesmerizing, and it has a powerful intensity that manages not to become overacting or scenery chewing.
One of the best cinematographic scenes ever made.
