I think a big mistake a lot of people still even after all these years is ignore the 1:30 rule. That is really hard to get down. If you can get passed that initial period then you have a fairly decent shot at beating Tyson if you keep your cool.
That's the first time someone explains that he takes more damage at the beginning of round one with the opposite hand. The people who film Tyson fights know it, but they don't tell you that. His health never went down that fast when I played it, so I've always thought TH-camrs were playing a different version of the game! Thank you!
I always thought the game was rigged. I, too, didn't know about the opposite hand technique. I once avoided all of his punches in all 3 rounds, taking no damage, but only getting him down to about half health, never knocking him down. The judges still vote for Tyson in that situation.
Ya thanks, I never knew about the opposite hand and I'm not even at Tyson yet lol. But I'd imagine it works like that for all the guys that throw upper-cuts. I mean that's the proper way to do it in boxing real life so.. And by the way I only stayed playing this again like a week ago. Brings back memories.
I never thought I could take down Tyson. But with your videos and a lot of practice I finally did it. It helps playing on NES Classic because you can practice round 2 by starting at a saved point rather than replaying round one on a console.
Mindset is vital in this fight. I know it sounds counterproductive, but you have to be completely relaxed during those first 90 seconds. The second you panic is when you start "anticipating" and you are going to get hit

1:16 That is exactly what throws me off with Tyson. For other boxers, the punch animation winds up and hits as you'd expect, but his are slightly more delayed. So I think it's more about reacting to the right thing, as reacting to the windup will get you hit as you return to neutral.
Thank you so much! First you helped me beat Mr. Sandman, and now Tyson! Thank you so much! I just got finished playing for three hours trying to beat him, and I finally got it! The strategy worked! I got hit a couple of times so I TKOed him in the third round and not the second. I kept anticipating his uppercuts and that was my downfall. Thank you again!
i just knocked him down for the first time! ( i didnt beat him, only knocked him down.) it took me so long to get to this part lol, thank you! i didnt use ur strategy on mr dream but i did for alot of them so thank you!
Yes, delayed punches when opponents are stunned actually take away more health from almost every fighter. It also gives you a star sometimes as well. To get the right hit on Tyson though has to be frame perfect, meaning you only have 1/60th of a second. If you are too late, he'll block. If you are too early, it'll take away a small amount of health.
I was finally able to beat Mr. Sandman with your tutorial...I couldn't do it before. I tried Mr. Macho on my own for a little while but couldn't win, no surprise. I took your tutorial on Mr. Macho and after numerous tries I still can't beat him...getting closer though...I can last to round 2 at least. Just came to see how Mike Tyson will be if I can ever get there...Thanks for the videos, I wouldn't have gotten this far without them
I did it! I beat Tyson legitimately! I first used a save state between rounds so that I could practice fighting him in the second round properly. After knocking him out that way I decided to try defeating him without a save state between rounds. Needless to say, it felt way too difficult because I could never master dodging his uppercuts at the right time. It felt like the time window to do the dodge was _way_ too small. After much frustration, I tried it by looking at my computer's screen instead of my television that was connected to it. That changed everything. I was suddenly able to easily dodge the uppercuts, as long as I didn't anticipate, and getting to the second round became suddenly quite manageable. Of course, it still took me incredibly great amount of tries to actually knock Tyson down three times in the second round, but I finally pulled it through. I really could not have done it without this video, so thank you, KoachKrab127, for creating this. You really explained things well. Word of advice: if you ever play this game with a computer, do not attach any secondary screen devices to it.
Mr Phsyco Even Summoningsalt says it is likely that only a few dozen people have the skills to beat him in Round 1. While I’m grateful to count myself as among them, an interesting recent statistic is from MAGFest 2020 challenge runs, in which 142 attempts (over 1171 total hours of playtime on 19 individual stations over a 72 hour period) resulted in 2 successful defeats (neither in Round 1) and a total of 10 hours spent on attempts. Given that I tried for about 2 hours just to get Round 1 (after doing Round 2 in short order) seems like most people gave up quickly or the remaining success spent hours just to get the Round 2. Either way, one can see that the biggest obstacle with Tyson is the reputation of the challenge, much like doing Quick Man’s stage without the freeze stopper.
super helpful guide! I'm hoping I can do the whole game in 1 lucky run also regarding the squinting eyes, IF you're really quick and hit him while his eyes are closed (or open) you can knock him out real quick
5:40 After decades with this game, I feel kind dumb in not figuring out to set the opponent up for a quick KO in the second round by keeping their health low.
Dude thank you for this video, I finally did it with this strategy. Even with this knowledge it took me hours and hours but I feel like the greatest gamer of all time rn, appreciate it
There is a set pattern in the first 1:30 if you are just looking to dodge punches and not counter. This may seem a waste but for beginners they may wish to just advance and defeat Mike. Love this tutorial. Keep watching to improve the 2nd rd intro gut punches, my timing is off
For the punches I throw the second punch as late as I can even if I don’t get it right, just so he can punch me less and I have more time to react, for his second batch of punches it’s just quick punches
Hey! Just got my first completion on Iron Mike. Thanks for the tips, it was exactly what I needed. Took me daily attempts for about 2 weeks. An hour a piece. It feels so good when you finally get it done!!!!!

well, a lot of people have Mike Tyson Punch-out!! But in 1990, the contract to keep Mike Tyson's name on their game was done. And they didn't want to renew it, so they replaced Mike Tyson with Mr. Dream, in 1990
Love how he threw in proper punches during the 90 seconds of dynamite grave digger punches. But both responses produce damage. The lead I think does 4 or 6 and the second one does 1 or 2 (if its proper).
I can beat Tyson, but I really struggle against Mr. Dream. Namely because Mr. Dream's coloration makes it much more difficult to predict his knockdown punches.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial, Finally beat Mike Tyson for the first time. I couldn't quite pull of the stars in Round 2, but I managed to survive until Round 3's end and win on decision with about 6200 points.
i am still learning how to react against tyson. i have practiced with a save state hundreds of times and he just destroys me. I have gotten too 1:30 only twice without getting hit.
I dont know if its helpful, but when Tyson does the eye twitch before doing the Hurricane Rush, if you punch him in the face at the right time he just goes down with that 1-hit. Cant tell the timing for sure as it happened once.
I finally beat Tyson just now and it would have taken me much longer if it wasn't for this guide, so thank you! TKO at 1:33 in round 2. I managed to get a one hit knock down on the blinking pattern as the third knockdown and it kinda jumpscared me lol.
Something weird I found: when Tyson blinks, there is a small frame of opportunity to knock him down with a gut punch, I don't know the timing, but I did it 2 times
KoachKrab127 I saw you do a buffer to get a star on one of Tyson’s hooks. I kind of wonder how big of a frame is it to get a star off one of the hooks?
I can't hit him in the stomach with the left hand in the 2nd round. There must be more to it then just hitting down and hitting him with the B button for the left hand. It NEVER works when I do it. He just blocks it every time. This is all that's keeping me from beating him. How do you do it? I just don't know what I am doing wrong.
I had trouble with it too on Wii through Nestopia(emu). but I did figure it out even though it's awkward to do... you can't just block Tyson's jab and release block and then left punch as that won't work as you already know. what I have to do, which is not easy, is you have to block but release block (i.e. stop pressing down on d-pad) slightly before Tyson actually makes contact with you and then immediately press left punch button as it seems to buffer the left punch so it will immediately counter hit as soon as possible at which point you will hit him and get a star. but I have trouble being consistent with it, especially since it seems the first two Tyson jabs, at least based on my save point at start of Round 2, are same timing but the third Tyson jab is delayed and if you use same timing you did on the first two it will fail to work. basically on Tyson's third jab you have to delay slightly longer (like wait a little long before doing that block technique) using that same tactic for it to work. p.s. but with Tyson in general, in the first 90-seconds, I don't see how one can react instead of anticipate as it just don't seem like it's possible to react purely by seeing the flash and then dodge as it just don't seem like you have enough time (even if it is possible on Wii etc I suspect it's too close to the edge of human reaction time and being you have to do it multiple times makes it tough as my natural instinct kicks-in and I anticipate instead of react which generally buries me). if you do it's extremely tight which I don't think it's all that realistic for most people to be able to react to, especially not consistently. I heard of 'input lag' but I am not sure if that has a effect on Wii or not, or if I just am not good enough to react. I have beat Tyson in the old days (back in the early 1990's) on a real NES though here and there. but on the Wii recently I did end up beating Tyson but why I lose so much is that first 90-seconds is difficult to get past as it is but even when I do it's usually with me being knocked down twice (maybe once, once in a while), which at that point I don't have much room for error in Rounds 2 and 3 as I have difficulty taking him out in Round 2 in general as when I did win two days ago on Nov 23rd I think I got lucky as I literally TKO'ed him with about 5-10 seconds left before the fight ended and I would have likely lost since to win by decision I heard you need at least five thousand points which I am pretty sure I did not have. but basically Tyson is too difficult as them making you only be able to have a out against him in those first 90-seconds based on a flash is way to much as it's pretty much largely luck for most people like me who have beaten Tyson once in a while. because without using save points, which is all I would count for legitimately beating Tyson, just getting out of the first 90 seconds in half decent shape is already difficult enough and then unless you happen to nearly master the rest of it, your odds of winning are quite low since you don't have much room for error since I am generally knocked down twice prior to getting to the second round etc. EDIT: I just setup the 'Mesen' (emu) on my Linux desktop PC, which appears to be officially supported by the pros who do speed runs, and with a wireless XBox360 controller connected to PC with official wireless USB dongle it took me about 30minutes to take out Tyson (less than 45min for sure) and I did it without using any save point (only save point I used was one when Mario says 'Fight' since it saves time reloading when I died. but other than that it was a straight play from start to finish of that fight so it's legit). I am not 100% sure but it appears one has more time to react to Tyson's flash before he hits you and it just feels better on PC vs Wii. I might look into getting a bluetooth device to connect Wii controller to PC as I suspect that will be even better than XBox360 controller. but I might stick with the XBox360 controller as I am going to test it out a bit. also, even in regards to your question that block/jab to get a star seems easier on this vs Wii. I still use the same technique but it's not as difficult to pull off from what I can tell now.
@@mas_79 I did wind up beating him after I watched videos from Sinister1. I beat it some months after this comment. I have it on my page. "Chris Beats NES Games- Mike Tyson"
They are the same exact person. They do the same things but they are just re skinned because Nintendo didn’t update the contract with mike Tyson to they changed the name and skin color of mike Tyson.
So one thing i've seen people do is just start off with hook punches on start of round 1 and go into fatigue. And then start dodging for the remainder of first 1 minute 30 seconds. It seems like a viable strategy that speed runners use for blind folded. Like by sinister1 and zallard1. Do you recommend this if you are bad at timing the dodges?
Doing the strategy you are talking about also actually takes a lot of precise timing. I do not know how to do it exactly, which is why I did not address it in the video.
In the first 1:30 onslaught, sometimes he raises his guard for a brief moment between the killer punches. Never been able to react quickly enough to throw a gut punch. Any thoughts?
I don't believe it's possible to hit him in the gut in the first round. I've watched several TAS videos and high score videos, and I have never seen anyone hit him in the gut in the first round. If it is possible, I'd love to see it. That would blow my mind.

This game was originally made with Mike Tyson. A few years later, Mike Tyson's contract with Nintendo expired, and Nintendo replaced Tyson with Mr. Dream. However, Mr. Dream has the exact same moves and pattern as Mike Tyson, so this tutorial for Tyson will also work for Mr. Dream.

Is Mr.Dream just a palette swap?
TheDirewolf 1234 - Yes, that’s right.
KoachKrab127 Good, the first 90 seconds is one of the hardest sequences in gaming history.
Thank you Mr krab
Is this the same with Mr Dream
Infinity Animation yes they are the same person but just re colored and re named
Idk why but I can't dodge his punches by reaction, just doesn't work
Practice a lot
KoachKrab127 I just kind of wonder what round is Mike Tyson more predictable in round 2 or round 3?
I believe that round 2 is more predictable. You are probably better off getting him in round 2 anyway, get your doc boost if needed.
@@jatloe ok
Would this work with Mr. Dream by any chance?
Thank you I beat mike tyson a few days ago thank you
Can you do How to beat Mr Dream
yes please
They are the same exact person. They do the same things but they are just re skinned because Nintendo didn’t update the contract with mike Tyson to they changed the name and skin color of mike Tyson.
So no he does not need to because they are the same person
very helpful
The first time I did beat Tyson was a jury decision.
Can u beat Mike Tyson with not reacting just anticipating
Thank you for this
So one thing i've seen people do is just start off with hook punches on start of round 1 and go into fatigue.
@@KoachKrab127 its a blindfold strategy done by speedrunners. They just keep punching tyson in the stomach till mac goes into fatigue.
Since there is input lag on the nes and the switch, whats the best way to play this without input lag?
The best way to have no input lag is to play on the original NES on an old school tube TV.
@@KoachKrab127 Thank you, I was able to beat it on NES Emulator. For some reason my nintendo switch had more input lag than the emulator which caused me unable to beat it on the nintendo switch.
@@JaceTimes Yes. Emulator's do not have much noticeable lag.
I did beat Mr. Sandman and Super Macho Man so far. And now I’m trying my best to defeat Mile Tyson. He could kill you with one single punch 🥊!
Little Mac is the passenger on the airplane.
do switch players get to fight him
i would love to thank you i just beat MR.Dream and i wouldn't have got nearly as close and because of that i realy want to thank and on top of that today is my birthday
i am turning 10
Happy birthday! And congrats on beating Mr. Dream!
@@KoachKrab127 thank you
KoachKrab127 playing the switch port rn and they replaced mike Tyson with me dream witch kind of stinks because it really doesn’t feel the same I’m playing the game right now as I’m typing and wish me luck to beat me dream!
@@pepsiman910 I am 43 and I still haven't beat him...getting close though
The bane of my existence as a kid 😂
I know exactly what you mean. It took me about 7 years to learn how to beat this guy.
@@KoachKrab127 I just started playing this again with my 5 year old grandson and talk about a blast from the past man. Better times before people lost their damn minds
@@KoachKrab127 makes me miss the skating rink too 😂
Masterful!
Again I'm having problems with my emulator. On the second round I block his punch and I try to punch him in the stomach right away and he just blocks it I can't repeatedly hit him no matter how I try for that first 30 seconds.
After Super Macho Man, I got the dream fight. It wasn’t Mike Tyson though. It was Mr Dream. Why? And can you make a tutorial for him?
This game was originally made with Mike Tyson. A few years later, Mike Tyson's contract with Nintendo expired, and Nintendo replaced Tyson with Mr. Dream. However, Mr. Dream has the exact same moves and pattern as Mike Tyson, so this tutorial for Tyson will also work for Mr. Dream.
Do you Have to have a CTR TV to beat Mike?
How do you do the super punch because I don’t know
Well, it is very very hard to beat mike tyson in punch out
Thank you for help
I finally did beat Mike Tyson! I didn’t completely knock him out, but at least I won 3 rounds.
is mr dream exactly the same as Mike? or does he have different attacks.
Yes, Mr. Dream and Mike Tyson have the same fighting pattern.
