I think a big mistake a lot of people still even after all these years is ignore the 1:30 rule. That is really hard to get down. If you can get passed that initial period then you have a fairly decent shot at beating Tyson if you keep your cool.
But my finger speed doesn't match the strength of his fists...

That's the first time someone explains that he takes more damage at the beginning of round one with the opposite hand. The people who film Tyson fights know it, but they don't tell you that. His health never went down that fast when I played it, so I've always thought TH-camrs were playing a different version of the game! Thank you!
I always thought the game was rigged. I, too, didn't know about the opposite hand technique. I once avoided all of his punches in all 3 rounds, taking no damage, but only getting him down to about half health, never knocking him down. The judges still vote for Tyson in that situation.
@@bigz0725just a tip, winning by decision is based on your score. You will always win by decision with a score of 5000 or higher against Tyson.

I never thought I could take down Tyson. But with your videos and a lot of practice I finally did it. It helps playing on NES Classic because you can practice round 2 by starting at a saved point rather than replaying round one on a console.

Mindset is vital in this fight. I know it sounds counterproductive, but you have to be completely relaxed during those first 90 seconds. The second you panic is when you start "anticipating" and you are going to get hit

I was finally able to beat Mr. Sandman with your tutorial...I couldn't do it before. I tried Mr. Macho on my own for a little while but couldn't win, no surprise. I took your tutorial on Mr. Macho and after numerous tries I still can't beat him...getting closer though...I can last to round 2 at least. Mr Phsyco Even Summoningsalt says it is likely that only a few dozen people have the skills to beat him in Round 1.
While I’m grateful to count myself as among them, an interesting recent statistic is from MAGFest 2020 challenge runs, in which 142 attempts (over 1171 total hours of playtime on 19 individual stations over a 72 hour period) resulted in 2 successful defeats (neither in Round 1) and a total of 10 hours spent on attempts.
Given that I tried for about 2 hours just to get Round 1 (after doing Round 2 in short order) seems like most people gave up quickly or the remaining success spent hours just to get the Round 2.
Either way, one can see that the biggest obstacle with Tyson is the reputation of the challenge, much like doing Quick Man’s stage without the freeze stopper.

1:16 That is exactly what throws me off with Tyson. For other boxers, the punch animation winds up and hits as you'd expect, but his are slightly more delayed. So I think it's more about reacting to the right thing, as reacting to the windup will get you hit as you return to neutral.

Did you know that if you punch him before the 1:30 and you hit him then you wait like half a second then hit him again you will take more health!
Yes, delayed punches when opponents are stunned actually take away more health from almost every fighter. It also gives you a star sometimes as well. To get the right hit on Tyson though has to be frame perfect, meaning you only have 1/60th of a second. If you are too late, he'll block. If you are too early, it'll take away a small amount of health.

I did it! I beat Tyson legitimately! I first used a save state between rounds so that I could practice fighting him in the second round properly. After knocking him out that way I decided to try defeating him without a save state between rounds. Needless to say, it felt way too difficult because I could never master dodging his uppercuts at the right time. It felt like the time window to do the dodge was _way_ too small. After much frustration, I tried it by looking at my computer's screen instead of my television that was connected to it. That changed everything. I was suddenly able to easily dodge the uppercuts, as long as I didn't anticipate, and getting to the second round became suddenly quite manageable. Of course, it still took me incredibly great amount of tries to actually knock Tyson down three times in the second round, but I finally pulled it through. I really could not have done it without this video, so thank you, KoachKrab127, for creating this. You really explained things well.
Word of advice: if you ever play this game with a computer, do not attach any secondary screen devices to it.

well, a lot of people have Mike Tyson Punch-out!! But in 1990, the contract to keep Mike Tyson's name on their game was done. And they didn't want to renew it, so they replaced Mike Tyson with Mr. Dream, in 1990

i am still learning how to react against tyson. i have practiced with a save state hundreds of times and he just destroys me. I have gotten too 1:30 only twice without getting hit.
For the punches I throw the second punch as late as I can even if I don’t get it right, just so he can punch me less and I have more time to react, for his second batch of punches it’s just quick punches

I can't hit him in the stomach with the left hand in the 2nd round. There must be more to it then just hitting down and hitting him with the B button for the left hand. It NEVER works when I do it. He just blocks it every time. This is all that's keeping me from beating him. How do you do it? I just don't know what I am doing wrong.
I can beat Tyson, but I really struggle against Mr. Dream. Namely because Mr. Dream's coloration makes it much more difficult to predict his knockdown punches.

Something weird I found: when Tyson blinks, there is a small frame of opportunity to knock him down with a gut punch, I don't know the timing, but I did it 2 times

I believe that round 2 is more predictable. You are probably better off getting him in round 2 anyway, get your doc boost if needed.

In the first 1:30 onslaught, sometimes he raises his guard for a brief moment between the killer punches. Never been able to react quickly enough to throw a gut punch. Any thoughts?
I don't believe it's possible to hit him in the gut in the first round. I've watched several TAS videos and high score videos, and I have never seen anyone hit him in the gut in the first round. If it is possible, I'd love to see it. That would blow my mind.

How do I play this game like you’re doing can I buy it on Amazon ?
I have a device called a “powerpak.” Unfortunately, it has been discontinued, but there are similar devices you can still get. The powerpak is a special NES cartridge with a slot to place a compact flash (CF) card. On the CF card, you put all of your NES roms. Then when you put the CF card into the Nintendo cartridge, you can play any game you want. Also, the cartidge had the ability to create save states.
But like I said, the powerpak has been discontinued. You can buy an “NES Everdrive” which is very similar.
does he fight the same way as Dream in the non Tyson version?
Yes. Mr. Dream and Mike Tyson fight the exact same way.
After Super Macho Man, I got the dream fight. It wasn’t Mike Tyson though. It was Mr Dream. Why? And can you make a tutorial for him?
This game was originally made with Mike Tyson. A few years later, Mike Tyson's contract with Nintendo expired, and Nintendo replaced Tyson with Mr. Dream. However, Mr. Dream has the exact same moves and pattern as Mike Tyson, so this tutorial for Tyson will also work for Mr. Dream.
Do you Have to have a CTR TV to beat Mike?
That’s way easier than the way I did it. I wouldn’t even punch in the first round until he threw hooks. Also I never star punched him at all
So one thing i've seen people do is just start off with hook punches on start of round 1 and go into fatigue. And then start dodging for the remainder of first 1 minute 30 seconds.
It seems like a viable strategy that speed runners use for blind folded. Like by sinister1 and zallard1.
Do you recommend this if you are bad at timing the dodges?
Doing the strategy you are talking about also actually takes a lot of precise timing. I do not know how to do it exactly, which is why I did not address it in the video.
@@KoachKrab127 its a blindfold strategy done by speedrunners. They just keep punching tyson in the stomach till mac goes into fatigue.
What happens when you knock down Mike on the first round anyway?
It is possible to knock him out in round 1, but it's very difficult and requires advanced strategies. You must knock him down 3 times, you cannot KO him in round 1.

Hugh Tahoob - They have to be very fast. Earliest frame possible after the block. Try to buffer them. You’ll get it with a bit of practice.

What are you using to play this game
I am playing on an NES top loader. The cartridge I am using is called a Powerpak. The Powerpak is an NES cartridge that you can put NES roms on in order to play any NES game you want on your real NES console.

How do you know when he throws a uppercut in round two? I find the timing to dodge different so it would be nice to know. Is it telegraphed?
If you are still wondering, after 0:30 in round 2, for the next 2:30, he has 2 patterns. Either (1) hook hook hook or (2) uppercut uppercut uppercut/hook(50/50). He starts with 1, then he has a 25% chance to do 1 and 75% chance to do 2. After a 2, he ALWAYS does 1. Therefore, I like to anticipate a wink after 1 and if I don’t see one, I know he will do an uppercut(his uppercut delay is longer). The thing that is hard to time is the end of (2), since it is random and has a long delay for the hook.

I hate this fight. I can't even make it to 1 minute. How am I supposed to "react" to his punches? I press the buttons on the controller to dodge, but it doesn't register it in time, because this cheaty bitch takes 10 milliseconds to throw a punch. And for this strategy to work, I can't get hit even once in round 1, so I have enough stamina to block all ten jabs at the beginning of round 2. This fight is impossible, unless if I took 10 pounds of steroids. Is there any other strategy that helps me dodge his punches? Because I would like to know.

There is a set pattern in the first 1:30 if you are just looking to dodge punches and not counter. This may seem a waste but for beginners they may wish to just advance and defeat Mike.
Love this tutorial. Keep watching to improve the 2nd rd intro gut punches, my timing is off
