What a beautiful, very old home with those gorgeous fireplaces. I actually really like it when the house is uncluttered, hasn’t been updated, and bears the original paint. Thank you, Kappy!

I owned an 1897 Queen Anne, there was a secret compartment built into the linen press in the dining room. I was putting some table linens in it one day, I bumped the back of the compartment rearranging some napkins, and a door popped open. Unfortunately there was no stash of gold in there. It was such a cool discovery.😁

They had a separate structure for cooking in many of these old properties. In case of fire the entire house did not burn down.
They did all the cooking and baking in beehive ovens , all open fire burning in huge
Fireplace. It was dangerous. Many women in long skirts back in the day caught on fire.
It was dangerous and very hot in summer time.

If walls could talk...these beautiful houses just left to decay, unloved and unwanted. You cannot recreate the craftsmanship and character of those eras. So sad..but it’s good to see that you care enough to document these beauties before we lose them forever.

I think that abandoned houses in general has a kind of mystery about them! Who lived there and why the place was abandoned in the first place. I am sort of fascinated when I watch your videos to see if the places had electricity ie electric sockets etc and viewing the faded decor. These old places has a kind of beauty about them, this is compared with some modern structures that are built today that lack character as they seem to look the same! This is compared with this Victorian structure in the video off which has great character, and it is a shame that so many seem to be left to rot! and most could be turned into comfortable homes. Finally, thankyou Kappy for giving me an opportunity in sharing these adventures!- RC - West Sussex, England

R Carter : A lot of places like these are old by the time the occupants age and are not able to keep up with maintenance. The grown children have homes and families of their own by this time and don’t want the expense of repairs. Then their widowed mothers or fathers die and the place is left, after certain items are taken out.

    • @robertcarter6963
      @robertcarter6963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@edithlewis9330 I can see a lot of what you are saying, and these are valid points, and many of the places cannot be saved for variety of factors with economics as a prime reason among many, but these places are America's heritage, and some structures should be saved if it is possible! Once these place go they have gone forever! I live in ancient small city in England that has retained its historical buildings. My home town has 2000 years of history stretching back to Roman Times. It has a 900 year Norman cathedral and has Georgian and Victorian buildings in its centre! with modern buildings and houses. There is an open air museum 12 miles away that have retained old buildings for people to see!

The outside of this house reminds me of my grandma's house. It was built before the civil war and generations of my family were born and passed away there and still live there to this day. It has been added on to and walls have been removed. I like that my family have kept up the house and I can feel the love there

Back when this house was built they had slaves for domestic help. Huge plantations had cabins out back of main house , but smaller properties had a room or rooms for the slaves but separate from the family
they cared for. They had separate staircase.
Homes would have servants stairs to back of house. Family used main staircase.
If homeowner had guests the servants stayed to back of house not to be seen.
There was strict protocol depending on the owners wealth and status.

I love this house! So old and historic! It looked like a lot of the materials were original. The woodwork inside was really solid and nice. I love those old spiraling, narrow staircases too. Looked in decent condition for being almost 200 years old. Must be the metal roof...keeping the house protected somewhat.
Also those big towering chimneys on each side of the house, along with the wood siding and the houses age, make it certifiably bada$$ IMO! What a "rock" of a house! So raw and solid!!! The AC/DC of houses!!! Great peak into the past, great looking location too!!! Thanks!!

Omg! What an amazing house! Now my 3rd fav of your videos so far! The shoe in the eaves may be from former inhabitants. Common custom way back was to put one of your shoes in the attic or in the walls if the house was being built to ward off evil and protect the the people in the house. Never remove one of those shoes!

I really enjoy the old homes you explore. Some of them relly educate me, I'm a carpenter and I learn a lot about how they used to build the homes. This helps me I'm hired to remodel an old structure. I do have to say all your comments about the filth, the odors, the natural inhabitants, such as wasps, birds and your fear of all these things is absurd. If you have these fears why are you there?

  • @cristywyndham-shaw5111

No bathroom or kitchen? I suppose there was a detached kitchen that is long gone. Layout of the rooms in interesting. The paint colours and attention to detail is phenominal. From the wood trim over the doorways to the fireplace mantel, to the ornate front door, it's so awesome. This house was loved in its day.

  • @andrewbrendan1579
    @andrewbrendan1579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I agree with an earlier comment that the house seems to have been added onto: I"m guessing that the front door in the middle started out as the front door at the and of the original front of the house and then the house was added onto.---I read Bill Bryson's book "At Home" and the author talked about how the interiors of early American houses were painted as colors and dyes became available. There were some colors and combinations we would find over-the-top today. This house seems to have have a variety of colors but they've faded so much we don't get a sense of how vivid, even "loud" they may have been.---That shoe in the first cubbyhole may have been left there for good luck. I don't recall exactly but there used to be a custom of putting shoes somewhere in a houses. When Abraham Lincoln's house in Springfield, Illinois was being worked on some years back a staircase or some steps that had been closed off was opened up again. Shoes from Abraham Lincoln and his sons were found inside, one shoe per step.

You have a really good camera it's always a clear picture. I see them extra wide doors and they where a lot more thicker than a modern door. One guy said his grandfather carved out a notch on the very top of his bedroom door where of course it couldn't be seen and every evening before he went to bed he would drop his wallet down the notch so nobody could get his money while he slept.

That house was built at two different periods, but not that far apart in time.I would say the brick foundation part was built first. The corner stairway is a hangover from medieval times when homes were mostly small and space was at a premium. It's a go indication that part of the house was built first. When the own gained greater wealth they added on to the house on a grander scale. I did find it interesting that their was no entrance from the bed chamber in the older part to the stair hall.

They didn't make accommodations for their children and their children's family back then. It would be servants quarters. I couldn't tell how big the opening was on the secret door, but alot of the secret rooms in the southern homes were to hide people. My sister's home had a secret door made into the tongue and groove wall that went almost unseen. It also had a narrow stairway off the kitchen with one large room for the servants. A doorway was made later on to connect it to the rest of the house.

That's a Quaker house. The men lived in on side and the women live in the other.

Interesting house, I'm sure it was quite grand in its day! BUT, no bath room or kitchen? Odd! ...Newk from Kentucky

Wish you had more colorful commentary in the context of each home, friend. Would make the videos a lot more relatable and interesting for people who love architecture and history! You’re getting better at it though, good job.

Beautiful wainscoting. Did you notice that the fireplaces without mantles had a row of header bricks between opening and top. Not decorative cause would have been covered with mantle. Structural?
Seems odd they had electricity but no running water. Also odd that 2 parts didn’t connect. Hidden cubbies-Underground Railway?
Great explore! Enjoyable and intriguing. Stay healthy!!!

Underground railway or vent system that could create a draft and privacy as well between two parts of house.

Buzzard roost upstairs. Overall it has a lot of nice details with wainscoting and trim.

I noticed someone comment that this house could have started out a little smaller and added onto a little later. I think this was the case with some old houses. I'm not sure about this one, but some were added onto when more kids/family came along and/or more wealth was acquired. It's sometimes very hard to notice if that had happened but it's definitely a possibility with old houses such as this one. Some additions you can clearly tell, some not so easy to tell. Interesting take by the other commenter and a good assumption.

This one strikes me a New England type of house. I really liked the front door. You had to watch your step in that house and not because of unstable floors.

Thanks very much. I love OLD houses, especially if there’s a possibility that the place could be restored ! I grew up in rural central Illinois. There were some impressive old homes peppered across the country side that had been vacant for years. I was determined to buy one of those old homes.when I became old enough. Now I’m old enough (retired) but the empty old homes are gone. Where did you find this old home?

At 0.34 you can see the outline of a building that was attached, could have been a kitchen extension long ago pulled down.
