Easiest to think in these terms. K-Pop is an industry . It covers most genres and includes soloists and groups and is a term used mostly in the west to indicate that the artist is from Korea and has music that is popular. In Korea they don't really use the term K-Pop cause they call them Idols (or Idol groups). It is not common for Idol groups to write their own music or be so involved in their art. BTS has broken thru the barriers that come with being called "KPop Idols" and have become "Global Idols" instead. That said they are extremely proud towards their country of birth so being referred to as KPop stars does not bother them.. The reason so many ARMY get upset is that it is usually used in a derogatory manner when people just dismiss BTS as some little "KPop boyband."
Really enjoying your reactions... great to see you and your son connecting over music.
    Sending greetings from Australia

Helpful hint for when you do RMs songs Joke and Do You (and BTS Debut song No More Dream) - the official MV on BTS channel does not have eng subs - here are the links with subs
Do You (Official MV with eng subs) th-cam.com/video/rN0_2jyOgzg/w-d-xo.html
Joke (Official MV eith eng subs) th-cam.com/video/OxMrBNBWksM/w-d-xo.html
Also - BTS No More Dream (2013 Debut song MV with eng subs) th-cam.com/video/btIzXwxDWOY/w-d-xo.html
ALSO - best quality live performances audio/video with eng subs, we like to use the youtube channel EnjoyBTSMore, she has put accurate lyrics to their most iconic performances.
Any other old BTS content (Interviews, backstage, etc) that doesn't have subtitles you can search the youtube channel BangtanSubs.
And..... Dial6137 has the most correct lyric videos.
Also BTS youtube channel is called BANGTANTV 💜

You asked ‘How come we never heard of them before’. I’m from The Netherlands and I have yet to meet another Army or someone who heard of them. Here they are not mainstream. I think that’s because they don’t play by the rules of the music industry. Their songs almost have no radioplay, because of payola. And the music industry works against them every way possible (BB/ Grammys). But luckily Army is strong. So BTS- and members-songs are always successful all over the world. Thanks for this reaction. 💜💜💜

It's horrible that they are treated this way when they are clearly so talented and wonderful human beings. But they can stand strong as they are and not be manipulated by the mainstream industry. I have felt the wrath of western music industry personally and wouldn't wish that upon these young men 😊🙏🏼

I think you underestimate the amount of people listening BTS's music in The Netherlands 😄 I also though that very few people know about them until the moment I found out my colleague I met is an ARMY. After that I've started asking people about their music tastes and have found quite some other ARMYs. And there are people who do not claim them as ARMYs but as soon as there are news about BTS they come to me and ask whether I'm aware what's happening (e.g. it was with their military enlistment) 🤣🤣🤣

To give you an idea in 2018 during BTS world tour they came to the Netherlands and sold out Ziggo Dome, so this is the least amount of ARMYs in NL. They were supposed to come perform in Rotterdam in 2020 but unfortunately it was cancelled..

Another NL Army here! And yes we are many (cried when didn’t get tickets for LY tour in AMS) but I feel most of the time like Whalien 52….with no other Army in sight
Listening to BTS in the radio is limited to the English speaking songs and My Universe, when there is so much good and meaningful music from them. I hope this will change in the future and that we also get included in the next concert tours 🤞🏻

@Xplozone Reacts, I like to make a few suggestions you could have cut the Taylor’s guide to BTS like a part one, part two, even part three or you could mute the music that they use because it’s BTS’s music that’s in the guide that’s why it’s being copyrighted! but this is a fan made guide you shouldn’t have any problems I’ve watched hundreds of other TH-cam reactors that react to this guide 🤷🏻‍♀️💜 Thanks for trying

I'll watch it again since we'd have different comments and reactions from you guys. If you try it, I suggest adding "re-upload part 1" or something like that in the title, so people don't think it's the same one. 🙂

Hello! Hope you guys had fun watching…😊 When ARMYs say that BTS is not kpop we meant they have evolved…. Because they are so involved in their craft their genre and music ‘grows’ with them? If you get my drift? As a person who listen to kpop , very few groups in the kpop industry evolve because they don’t usually write their own songs…. Most of them are like britpop in the 80s & 90s(I am thinking Stock, Aiken and Waterman era); most groups last 5-7 yrs… very few grew and evolve to their 10th yr and beyond… I love music in general and have a wide range of genres that I listen to and BTS have done most of them as a group…. To me that is impressive… My daughter and I went to Suga aka August’D aka Min Yoongi’s concert in Singapore recently… got my mind 🤯 and my daughter worried 😂… have fun discovering them I only started listening to them seriously in 2017 although my students introduced me to them in 2014 (I find them too angsty then) but I will be following them through till the end… I’m too old to stan other groups anyways… Borahae (i purple you) 💜

I just want to say that armies love long videos. What we don’t love is skipping videos to shorten the content. You completely skipped J Hope, barely watched Jungkook , and so on. This really takes the enjoyment out of it at least for me. I’ve watch this documentary more than a hundred times and never get tired of it, so please don’t skip over the contents related to BTS. I really like you two and it’s wonderful to see a father and son doing something they enjoy. So let’s watch full videos. Thank you.
P.S. If you cut the video due to copyright reasons I think one of the way to avoid is to get permission from the creator. I’ve seen other reactors do that and with no problems.

As you've said, they have been the biggest band for a few years, but you're only just finding out about them.
This is the result of them being suppressed by a western music industry that can't figure out how to exploit them, and has an aversion to artists of different languages and races.
ARMY are protective because we want more people to benefit from the positive and meaningful content.
But being categorized as just a pop boy band turn off most people that think BTS just do superficial pop songs.
BTS is a safe space that a lot of people don't know they need.

Army will often state BTS is not K-pop
My feeling is that BTS started from and lives within the K-pop industry but they are completely different from what is considered K-pop music… partly because they work in so many genres and partly because they have successfully reached out to the world and the world has reached back. Together they form a culture into themselves; one of mutual love and respect. I don’t think there is another group in the world that has created a long playlist of music dedicated directly to and about their fans… including magic shop, 2-3, mikrokosmos, pied piper, bulletproof the eternal, moon, still with you, letter (dear army), take two, forever young, sea and more

Thank you for sharing your BTS journey with us..... Not sure if you know.... Korean people count age differently to others...
Korean Age vs International Age - difference is 1-2 years depending on if their birthday has been.... In most videos, including this one, they are giving Korean ages so you will need to adjust.
In Korea when you are born you are considered 1 year old. Then on 01 Jan every year you add another year to your age, no matter what your birthdate is. ....
Year of birth - International age at Debut on 13June13 (Year and age became trainee)
    Jin 1992 - 20 yo (2011 - 18yo)
    Suga 1993- 20 yo (2011 - 17yo)
    JHope 1994 - 19 yo (2011 - 17yo)
    RM 1994 - 18 yo (2010 - 15yo)
    Jimin 1995 - 17 yo (2012 - 16yo)
    V 1995 - 17 yo (2011 - 15yo)
    JK 1997 - 15 yo (2011 - 13yo)
(So JK was only 13 when he joined Big Hit and 15 when he debuted. )
Rule of thumb - if it's before their birthday - subtract 2 years to get international age. if it's after their birthday - subtract 1 year to get their international age.
    EG: TaeHyung (V) born 30 Dec 1995 ...... current International Age 27 (Korean Age 29). ... 2 years difference
So Tae born 30 Dec 95 is 1 year old, then on 01 Jan 96 he is 1 more year older (so they would say he is 2 years old, when we would say he is 2 days old.)
So he was considered 29 in Korea since 01 January, we would say he is 27 turning 28 in Dec.
It's a different way of looking at age, from new years day - Tae is living his 29th year (since conception) - instead of - he turned 27 (since birth)....
The Korean Government is recently bringing international age as the standard in Korea, but all older videos will be referencing Korean age.

Hi guys, love watching your reactions. You asked "Why haven't we heard of them before?" Well, you're in the UK like me and unfortunately UK radio won't play their songs. They didn't even give their 3 English songs much airplay. Jimin's recent solo song "Like Crazy" actually got to number 3 in the Top 40 and stayed there for three weeks and I didn't hear it on the radio at all apart from on Capital's chart show on the three Sundays it was in the charts. I even wrote to Capital Radio over a year ago to complain and ask why they wouldn't play BTS's songs and the reply I got was "we'll pass on your comments" to the person who prepares their playlist. Jungkook sang the World Cup theme tune and performed it live during the Opening Ceremony and BigHit and the BBC advertised the "World Cup Opening Ceremony at 3pm" but the BBC didn't show it, they just discussed Quatar's politics. BTS do have a huge following in the UK though. Their first visit to London in 2018 sold out the O2 for 2 nights and in 2019 they sold out Wembley Stadium for 2 nights (in 90 minutes!) when on the last night they were surprised by Army by singing to them (which you saw in the guide). Jin and J-Hope are currently serving and it looks like RM might be next. I hope you guys keep on the BTS journey - there's lots of content, not just songs and MVs but fun stuff too 💜💜💜

@@XplozoneReacts Yeah the western music industry does everything it can to not play BTS, downplay them, exploit them, cover them up, etc. from YT, to streaming platforms (Spotify), to BB charts, etc...
Apparently around the time they were releasing their English song and were getting a little radio play they had chances to get higher and played more but BTS refused to play by their rules (pretty much cheat and everything) and wanted to be authentic to themselves and have authentic success. For example, views to filtered out WAY more than most because YT loses money from them, because BTS don't monetize their videos and BTS have a high traffic, so they lose tons of money, so they filter tons of views (which also effect charts like BB). Or BTS don't do payola, so they just don't get played really. Or BB will change rules left and right to that will exclude BTS and the members or push the down the charts, for example: Like Crazy by Jimin went #1 on BB100 for 1 week, but it should have been eligible based on how many sales they got unlike the other song to be #1 a second week. However, they suddenly changed the rules to cut sales (oh and a ton of sales somehow went missing...p.s. ARMY have evidence) which made him fall down the BB100 chart the second week....

6:40 Not only that but they became the first male kpop group in history to perform Permission To Dance at the UN Assembly.
8:06 Yes, BTS started as teenage talent but well-known by the locals in their hometowns but many tend to get confused when seeing this specific scene which is from their episode 8 finale of mini-series #BTSAmericanHustleLife that was filmed in los Angeles (2014), a year after their official debut. It was part of one of their missions of learning how to ‘self-promote’ by standing on the sidewalk trying to randomly invite people to their mini concert as well as learned from a few western artists under the supervision of coolio and warren g throughout the episodes before they performed at the end of the show with their debut songs “no more dream” and “we are bulletproof pt2” along with an ending encore to show what they’ve learned during the final episode.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the guide and for sharing your journey with us. It is nice to see the transition from thinking you won't enjoy their music to surprise over their range and talent to realising that they are amazing, humble people. This video only just touches on the struggles they faced, and it is good not to dwell in the past but just a couple of things to mention. KPop companies are not like our British record labels, they are entertainment companies not just music. The big 3 referred to in the video are JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. Slots and airtime on music shows, interviews, radio play etc is all paid for. Big Hit Entertainment was a very small company, close to bankruptcy, so they couldn't pay. Slots and time on shows was rare and their performances often cut or not aired. BTS appreciate ARMY so much because fans found the through Soundcloud and TH-cam and shared with their friends. Growth of ARMY was outside of normal KPop channels so the industry tried their best to keep them down, stop them succeeding. Fans of other groups made sure to spread unfounded rumours, they would turn off their fandoms light sticks when BTS did perform on shows so BTS would see what they refer to as a black wave, intimidating to see how little support they had back then. So when ARMY grew and the numbers of lights increased they could feel that support. Their song Mikrocosmos reflects this well, lone stars shining their best becoming it's own galaxy of lights. Whalien 52 also talks about a lone, unheard voice slowly recognised and spread through ARMY. The song We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal is a song for ARMY. I recommend seeing their earlier MVs first so you recognise the references in that video but the song is beautiful, main sentiment is "We are not 7 with you". They truly appreciate their fans and ARMY have supported and protected BTS in return. If a parent hopes their child has good role models in their lives, BTS members are the best role models they can have. They are polite, hard working, encouraging, supportive,. They promote self love, self esteem, looking after each other, acceptance of people for who they are, self improvement etc, etc. I am pleased that they are role models to my 2 children, and they brought us closer together as we share this bond of ARMY and common interest. Really looking forward to seeing more of their journey. Let us now how you want to go forward. ARMY can help guide you but in the way you want, earliest to newest, random favourites, the fictional story line BU, genre. You name it, we can guide. Borahae 💜

BTS is a 7 member group who is now in their 10th year with a 350+ track discography largely written and produced by the members themselves conjoined by their inhouse producers. The leader 'RM' has 210+ credits making him the youngest most credited artist in Korea and the rest of the members are not far behind. BTS is known for being extremely profound at articulating what they introspect and composing it into the sound they with their artistic knowledge believe will deliver the emotion of their lyricsm. They began with their roots in hiphop but have experimented their way into currently having above 10+ genres in their discography with the main being hiphop, pop, r&b and electronic, but majority of the time its a fusion of these genres, or their subgenres. Like latin pop, old school hiphop with boom bap, rap rock, dance pop, ballads, emo hiphop, jazz etc. Since they articulate so well, their music is very human oriented adressing extreme mental health issues (all they way from comforting, motivating, to eery delivery with raw mvs that youtube asks for viewers discretion), sociopolitical commentary etc. Their discography shows the growth from school boys to the tribulations of youth, to addressing temptation, to reaching maturity, to loving onself, to finding the core essence of the mind (i work in the field of psychology and i have yet to find an artist that is as profound as bts in accurately potraying psychological themes) to fighting the pandemic to now doing solo albums as each of the bts members complete their mandatory military. They will come back as a group in 2025!

I'm glad you brought up the fact that BTS is massive, and yet you don't hear/see them every where? Why is that? well, the summary is that they are being sabotaged by the music industry because they didn't get popular and they are not succeeding through the industry standards. They became big on their own and through the fans support. They want to maintain their musical integrity and didn't want to shake hands with the corrupt industry execs so they are kept down as much as possible. The latest scandal is that one of the members (JK) announced his single will release on July 14th. Fans started to pre-order the single, and the very next day, Billboard decided to change the charting rules to sales from artists webpages will NOT be counted on the charts. Can you believe that? So if Celine Dion's fans purchased her songs/albums directly from her website or her authenticated pages, they won't be counted? That's ridiculous! If you want to learn more about how the music industry works and why Army's have to fight so hard against them, please react to the following videos:

Btw, Biden grew up with quite a severe stammer, but deals with it so well most people don’t realise that. I am sooooo thankful they met Biden and never the previous occupant. But then, the previous occupant wouldn't have invited them or discouraged hate and violence against Asians. He, in fact, fanned those flames.

BTS vs K-POP: a video essay is a good one to explain why army’s don’t like it when you reduce BTS to just another K-pop group. Some ppl have already explained it in the comments but the videos dives deeper and will help you understand K-pop better as well as what sets BTS apart from it. Their conclusion is that yes BTS IS a K-pop group, but having that statement come from someone who does understand kpop and BTS history means something completely different than someone who doesn’t saying it.

22:20 To make a long story short, music industries push whoever gets them the most money and other agendas.
I always say that how BTS came up was mostly on fans' drives, our drive to share their music to people, radio stations, channels, journalists, etc etc etc. And yeah, we've both been burned many times by these media people in power, but we still pushed on. So together with BTS' drive and ARMYs' drive, we both came up (Suga said something very similar in a more poetic manner lol). BTS doesn't deal much with payola so they don't get playlisting much, radio spins, articles, etc etc. But they have a very dedicated fanbase that is now so big and worldwide that they don't have to play by the music industry's unfair games. I remember in the early days we saw how they were being ignored, looked down on, and insulted due to their clothes, skin color, looks, style, race, speech, music, lyrics, everything, just because they were vulnerable at the bottom of the rung so they were easy to pick on. At that moment, we as fans wanted them to rise up so high so that they would have some power, enough to not be looked down on like that again. I'm proud of how far they've come.
Anyway, I said long story short, but I started reminiscing and rambling. Sorry! Going now hahahaha

Just asking....did you watch the whole guide or what was cut out of your screening, was it skipped out completely? Forewarning - ARMY may have a bias (favourite) but missing one is like you skipped out and missed their bias....lol.

Yeah lol we said at the beginning what we expected TH-cam to do. TH-cam did exactly that. I had to cut bits out or it wouldn't be published. We struggle with this a lot. But a lot of suggestions from comments we read may have a way around it. So we'll hopefully not have to suffer TH-cam's wrath again lol

I am going to start watching this video but the original Taylor guide es 46 minutes and yours is only 26. Did you skip parts of it? Usually reactions are longer than the original. Do you have some kind of restriction? 😞. I hope you watched all of it and can only share half of it with us.
Finished watching. Too bad you could no react to all of it with us. There were barely 10 seconds for J-Hope. Thanks for reacting anyway.

8:39 Just to explain a bit why some people say BTS isn't kpop. BTS started off as kpop and for all intents and purposes, they are kpop. However, I would say they are kpop and beyond. They gone so above and beyond out of any traditional sense of genre that even though it's easiest to categorize them as kpop, they are more than that now as well. One other thing is that a few years back, some salty kpop fans from other fandoms came together and made an unofficial kpop coalition and told us ARMYs that they were expelling us and BTS from the world of kpop hahahah. So a lot of ARMYs just rolled with it and "ok then, yeah we're not kpop anymore. it's bts-pop. buh-bye". hahahaha

  • @TheTwil1

Plse, look at the office and achievement of getting there. Presidents come and go. And “K-pop” was defined by the big three company’s. Which BTS were the first outside company to win awards in. Previous to them NO ONE outside those 3 ever won anything. The companys since have been trying to destroy BTS. They are pissed that a group outside their “circle” has surplanted them. Now Hybe (BTS company) is bigger than the three companies combined. Lots of history there. Now that BTS has made it bigger than any star in Korea SUDDENLY BTS is now representing all of kpop. The company’s have since been trying to copy them, replace them with the “next BTS” even when BTS still exists! In Korea they retire groups faster than you change underwear. The next big thing! South Korea doesn’t understand artists and legendary groups like the rest of the world does. They never had any.💜 So yes, BTS is in K-pop, but they are NOT kpop.

Reacting to Taylor's video used to be fine but I find out lately with the new reactors, they got hit by a lot of copyright. It is sad that I could not see your reaction on a lot of parts but I still appreciate you chop off some parts of the video so you can be posted on YT for us to watch.
The way to be able to post it all is to either mute the copyrighted part or cover it with other sound.
For some live performance that are copyrighted, you can cover the video with big letters/words or blur it so we still can see your reaction and some part of the video so we know that you reacted to which part.
If BTS is so big, why you never heard of them?
Because they don't follow the rule of the music industry and media.
When they debut, their company BigHit doesn't have a lot of money to the point of nearly bankrupt. So BTS never given a chance by media and music industry. They got big slowly because of ARMY. When they start to get big, the big 3 Kpop industry try to kill them and put them down.
As in US, BTS still doesn't want to follow the music industry rules to pay payola so they got cheated a lot such as always nominated in grammy and never given a chance to win and grammy only use ARMY to gain views and rating, Billboard always change the rules to try not give a spot for BTS to win, same as, spotify, and youtube. You might not know that youtube actively cut the number of views in BTS MV a lot. This is due to BTS doesn't give them profits as other artists or company that pay them.
Every time BTS win no 1 on billboard, billboard always change the rule to try to chop the highes number that BTS have in the certain category, etc.
It might confuse you when you heard BTS is not Kpop and in the video said BTS is Kpop.
BTS is Kpop but goes beyond Kpop. Saying that, BTS doesn't really fit all the rules of Kpop.
Kpop is not a genre. Kpop is an industry.
Kpop generally the idol usually just sing and dance and don't have a say to what song the company want them to sing. The song was written and produce by other people and only given to them (but after BTS' success, some company now give their idol a bit of freedom in their involvement on their song or have a say in it) .
Kpop industry usually about appearance so a lot of idols that are not pretty/handsome enough are pressured to have beauty surgery by the industry.
Before BTS, Kpop lyrics usually shallow, no deep lyrics until BTS' success some of them try to copy and follow.
Kpop songs from a Kpop group usually have a tendency of similar? in a way that I could not explain.
These are not in BTS. BigHit give them full freedom to create their own art and songs. Even their debut song was to challenge their generation about their dream and mindset against the culture. In their other song in 2013 when most of them still teenagers, they also challenge the Korean education system.
And as I said before, BTS was pushed down by Kpop industry.
Since sometimes saying BTS is Kpop has the tendency of downgrade them due to the how people think of Kpop, some ARMY doesn't want to categorize them as Kpop in the hope for other people to give them a chance to see how talented they are and how their musics and arts are vary, deep and relatable and that their music can bring a positive impact to more people.
Thank you for reacting to BTS and welcome to the BTS' world.
    Borahae 💜

I’m a 54 year old American ARMY and I don’t like most politicians honestly, or either of our two main political partys, so I’m not trying to be political when I share this. When I heard BTS was coming to the White House my first and ongoing thought was, “I hope Biden doesn’t say anything embarrassing in front of NamJoon.” These chaotic seven humble young men are too intimidating, I don’t know what I’d talk with them about (if I was bright enough to learn all of their beautiful language)! 💜
I’m so grateful for OG ARMY who supported them from day one, which is why I was able to find them much later. 💜

10:50 RM’s 148 IQ for the longest time until retesting with midexams or KSATs and what I thought was his new recorded IQ at 190 turned out to only be his english composition test score, which I’ll have to go back to rewatch #ProblematicMan to see what his new IQ is (if mentioned). Also, he learned english during his teen years watching “Friends” and later taught the rest of them along with JHOPE who shared in teaching them english as well. *All the members can speak decent amount of english to hold full conversations.*

It was cut post edit due to the rules. Otherwise we weren't able to publish our video. TH-cam has done that to is many times, also completely blocked some of our videos completely. It's my son's channel so I won't risk more copywrite strikes, or he'll lose all of his hard work. As you can see, we're not pros with editing.
