I tame roosters by grabbing them when they come to attack me. Then I scoop them into my arms and cuddle them, walking around the property with them. When they are calm I let them go again. I keep repeating this and they soon leave me alone coz they do not want to be picked up and cuddled. This has always worked for me.

I'm in no way opposed to raising animals for food; however, I do believe it should be done humanely and with respect--exactly as you're doing. Thank you for sharing your adventures and lessons, showing both the good and the unfortunate. So sorry for the loss of your chicken.

I’ve had chickens almost 8 years now, and still have some of my original girls ..they’ve moved states with us and everything.. it’s definitely sad when you lose one. We’ve lost a few over the years from predators to just random death with no sign of any illness or injury. Sorry for your loss of your chicken

I just had a rooster die a month ago. He wasn't attacked by another animal, he just died which sometimes happens. The hens were all standing around him like they were mourning or trying to figure out what was wrong with him. It made me cry and cry. I love that you talk about raising your chickens for food and treating them good, taking the best care for them that you can, having a good warm coop for them, feeding them good food, etc. I feel exactly the same way. We raise chickens, cows and every few years and couple pigs. I don't raise my chicken for food, other than the eggs but the cows and pigs are. However, I take the best care of my animals that I possibly can. I spray down the pig pen everyday to keep it clean and as you probably know pigs love baths so after I spray down the pen I spray them too. They love it! Plus, I live in Tennessee and it gets so hot here in the summer that I'm sure it feels great to have some cool water sprayed on them. My cows, when I shut the house door in the morning, start balling and start running to me. I will admit that I get very attached and it's really hard for me when the time comes to say goodbye. But I know that they had happy well taken care of life.

Man, that sucks! It happened to us too on Jan 5th. A dog (or 2?) came from someone's house a few blocks away and killed 5 of our chickens. We didn't fence in our chickens because our yard is very uneven and we couldn't figure out how to put up the fence without gaps where the chickens could pass through. After that attack we had no choice and couldn't delay anymore. But 2 of our hens (they youngest in the flock) kept escaping. So even though I hated it because their feathers were beautiful, for their own safety, I clipped their wings. I learned from another youtuber/chicken keeper that if chickens see the top of the fence where they can safely land/jump up to, they will jump over it but if you put a string of bunting above the top of the fence, they will not attempt to fly toward/through it.

We had the same thing happen not long after we got our Pyrenees. He was younger than we expected so we are taking precautions and slowly training till he's fully mature. Currently the hens literally walk over him inside his doghouse to get his food if we forget to take it. 😂 I think the exposure is working because he just lays there and closes his eyes. The one he killed last spring, he was chasing/playing and it was hurt but he didn't even want to eat it. Just an immature/untrained dog so we're trying to train him before he's alone with them during the day. I'm sorry for your loss!!

Sorry this happened. Note that You can put netting across the top so they can’t fly out, then you can let them
Keep their wings in case they need to try to get away from a predator. (I’m not against clipping though). Also most roosters are mean for a reason. They are there to protect the flock. Never met a nice one. That would be nice but rare. Just keep the bad guy and have caution especially around kids. My suggestions only. Best wishes.

And remember “a happy pig is a tender pig” goes for anything you raise to eat.
Roosters I find if you handle them daily they tend to be very friendly and the ones who are not are sold or chicken and dumplings. I expect all my birds hen or Roo to eat outa my hand . Keep up the good work young man ,one day you’ll be old with lots of grandchildren .

One thing I see that you DO NOT have is CONVENIENT SHELTERS FOR THE CHICKENS TO RUN UNDER. That is a MUST! Put several close enough for the chickens to get to. It's what chickens do instinctively for protection. Even inside their fencing, you need that. A hawk can come down out of nowhere. My chickens would huddle under a small trailer to hide, and later under some farm equipment under an overhang.

Awww, I'm sorry for your loss. It sucks losing an animal, no matter how many you have. As far as roosters go, from my own experience, I've found the Barred Rocks to be the best natured... and... to be the best protector of the flock. I have 3 roosters at the moment (only one Barred Rock), & the other two pay absolutely no attention to what's going on around them, unless it involves another rooster going after one of the hens. My Barred Rock will herd them to shelter if there's a potential threat to the flock. None of my roosters are aggressive to me though.Again, this has just been my experience. Good luck to you!!

Sometimes chickens just die. I raise chicken for years, I won't blame the dog without first doing some investigation. I has 6 baby chicks I raised until they were big enough to move into the big hen house. One day I walked out and one of my new baby chicks was laying on the ground dead. No reason just dead.
I would suggest getting surveillance camera to keep an eye on you animals after dark, or at least a trail camera.

That’s what happens with a city dog. A Pyrenees raised in a city or even suburban environment is like an indoor cat. It’s unnatural and messes with them. Our Pyrenees has never once stepped foot in the house or any vehicle. He’s 100% outdoor and loves and protects the animals. He even carried a live chicken in his mouth for hours until we got home because a predator was around. I would recommend having your Pyrenees live outside only and not allowing any city dogs anywhere near your livestock. This will almost eliminate predators entirely. As for death from above (hawks/owls), create an environment that lures ravens/crows to your property. The more ravens/crows you have around the better. Sorry you lost a chicken. We don’t name our prey animals for that very reason. All our chickens/roosters/cats are simply called chickens or cats.

We have to guardian dogs and two small dogs someone apparently just didn't want them and they came to our property so we've kept them no one in the area whats small dogs due to the predators that we have which are bobcats mountain lions coyotes javelinas and hocks bald eagles The small dogs are in training one of them just wants to play with the chickens but she's to rough.our guardian dogs are great they've been trained. It is always sad to lose one for an unjust reason I know there is those who say it's just a chicken are chickens and most people's chickens have a purpose and it's not to be killed buy another animal Pat or otherwise but as they say things happen

Jeez it would b different if the thing killed it for food but just to kill it and leave it sucks

It most likely did, but either couldn’t get it off the ground or got chased off. Most predatory birds(and animals in general) don’t tend to kill for any reason other than protection and predation as it’s a huge waste of energy

I hope you at least ate that thing. Don’t let the meat go to waste.

I’m sorry man, I can sit here and say how you should cover them and this and that but who does that help? I hope that’s the only casualty y’all have… it’s sad man. Every time.

Appreciate that brother. Getting a big netting is something we will think about if this becomes a major problem. Thanks though, love the support.
