    Not in your control I know, Marie-Anne, but I would like to see more models over 50 with a tummy. Most plus-size models still have flat stomachs, and they have young, firm skin because they're 20-somethings. We ladies of a certain age need to be represented in a different category that's not necessarily plus sized but can't wear the things we used to. A lot of us are in a limbo land of not skinny, not fat. The midsection is a minefield!

    • @kimberlyperrotis8962
      @kimberlyperrotis8962 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +69

      I so agree! Also, plus-sized models always have tiny waists and big hips, but we all thicken around the waist in middle-age, even without weight gain. My waist is 4 inches bigger at age 64, although my weight is exactly the same, 125 lbs., as on my wedding day 40 years ago and my narrow hips are no bigger. I can’t find any trousers or jeans that fit. Those young models, especially the fit models they use for sizing and pattern-making clothes, have small, firm middles that we don’t have, so the clothes never fit well. I used to be teased about my concave tummy, that it “stuck in instead of out”, but no longer! I don’t know a single 50-year old with a flat tummy, female or male, it just doesn’t work that way. Our society has to adjust its expectations, no one has a 16-year old body, however thin and fit they might be, at age 50 or 60. Or firm, unwrinkled arms, why expect that for 60-year olds?🙂

      Shepherds fashions in Ottawa has a daily fashion show. They cater to the mature woman with all of their size range but there are a couple of larger petite women in the mix. They also have videos on dressing the apple shape. They sell mainly basics and then style them with accessories. It would be useful to have the names of plus size stores that aren’t big box. I would rather have a small good quality collection. Sympli is a Canadian company that sells basics in plus size as well as regular sizing.

    THANK YOU Marie-Anne!!! I was small until I began going through "the change", and put on 60 pounds in under a year while I was eating very healthy AND exercising. And I can't lose it. I have not given up but I'm at a loss. And with all the fat-shaming the attitude is "you want to look good, lose weight". I get the impression that the reason plus size clothing is so abysmal is to punish us and Shame us into losing weight. We ladies are well-aware; painfully aware of our shortcomings but we still want to look nice. I appreciate you including us in your videos.
    One problem with clothes, across the board is that the manufacturers and designers don't really know how to tailor or cut designs and fabrics in ways that are flattering. I still had that issue when I was much thinner. I have vintage clothes... most of them I can no longer wear, but the clothes from the 40s and 50s were so well tailored and designed. And the details were amazing. A lot of the outfits I had were department store brands. Maybe from their couture collections but not designer. Now you can spend a fortune and they are still not tailored well.
    I so appreciate the time you take to do these terrific videos. Thank you.

    No thanks to fairly severe scoliosis I am very short waisted. If I tuck in a shirt my shortened torso is a mismatch for my very long legs. I don’t wear baggy tops because they look terrible too-unless I’m exercising. What do you suggest I do? Your channel is so helpful to me. You are an inspiration for us women of a certain age in showing that aging has a lot to do with one’s attitude. Having taught several years at a large university I discovered that many of my students were years older than me in their outlook on life which broke my heart. Being young at heart is the way to age gracefully and with class, n’est ce pas mon amie?💜

    Bonjour Marie-Anne,
    It's lovely to be here again after almost a month away. We were in The Netherlands touring on our own before taking a cruise around Iceland. There was lots of opportunity on the cruise to people-watch. Lovely women from all over the world - Europe, Australia, Canada, the USA. I analyzed a lot of outfits with your lessons; what worked, what didn't work, and how to improve. I would have loved to say to so many women - you have a waist, let's see it! And after spending nearly 24 hours in transit on the way home, airports were also places to people-watch. Thank you for your videos and your e-courses, Marie-Anne. With your help, I felt mostly chic for the trip. Black linen trousers, a black t-shirt, and a medium-blue linen-cotton blazer comprised my travel outfit, and I was complimented on it. Mille mercis encore, Marie-Anne!

All the dresses I tried on over the past weekend made me want to go inside and never leave the house. In the end, I settled for an oversized shirt to cover the arse, worn with jeans and a short jacket. I like your channel. It encourages me to change it up, be a little daring. BUT...drawing attention to my waist with belted dresses is the worst. I have rolls both above and below my natural waist. And that lumpiness SHOWS! Even at 28, when I was a well muscled 128 lbs at 5"7", I had a spare tire around my hips (though NO rolls above my waist) Now. at 64, weighing 161 at 5'6", the double rolls are terrible! I figure that since its harder to build muscle now that I'm older, I must get down to 115-120 lbs to lose the rolls. Working on it. Very frustrating. So, for now, I feel that I must hide.

    Great video for all older women, even those like me who aren't "plus size" (I wear a medium, 8-10), but have the normal sags and bulges of age. I'm 63, and I've always been fairly slender (sometimes downright skinny)... but about 5 yrs ago I started wearing "mild" shapewear to smooth out my back. Adopted nude underwear (or black) MANY years ago!

    one thing I am not fond of is where ladies wear trousers which only reach down to above the ankle. Being short myself (152 cm) I immediately look even shorter, hence even large ladies look wider and shorter and make you legs rather short instead of trousers/jeans etc.. streamlined to over the ankles.

    • @MarieAnneLecoeur

    I am curious about how wearing white sneakers can help us look modern, but not necessarily elongate as they are often a contrasting colour to the main outfit and would cut off any lengthening . Otherwise as always Marie -Anne great ideas here thank you!

    • @MarieAnneLecoeur
      @MarieAnneLecoeur  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      White sneakers are a more modern shoe and hence give a modern look to an outfit. Yes they generally contrast in colour to the pant and could be said to be 'leg shortening' but there are other leg lengthening techniques you can use to counteract this if required watch here th-cam.com/video/bUc4w0_vhZ4/w-d-xo.html

    Your comments about thickness of fabric solidified something I had been thinking about: WHY do I always look overwhelmed by jackets?!
    I love the idea of them, but they just never really work as well as an open cardigan or duster. It occurred to me the other day that jackets tend to be made of more rigid fabric, where cardigans and dusters are flowier. This, I think, will save me a lot of disappointment. I can still wear a jacket, but will know it’s not my _best_ choice.

    • @MarieAnneLecoeur
      @MarieAnneLecoeur  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like your thinking LlamaSugar. Jackets are made up of sandwiches of different fabrics to give it structure and shape so are indeed much thicker than cardigans👍

    Plus-sized fashion offerings are just awful, I feel bad for anyone who needs to shop in this size range. It’s almost all black or huge-print, polyester knit fabrics, horrible. That’s one reason, besides my health, that I strive to keep my weight within the normal range; plus-size women just don’t have any decent clothing choices. When are brands going to get the message? The average US woman is now plus-sized, specifically a size 16 US/20UK and only 5’4”/164 cm tall. Many women, of course are much, much bigger, what can they possibly wear? When I was a US size 12, I decided to lose the excess weight, it was hard enough to find clothes I liked at that size, especially in non-US brands. Everyone needs stylish, natural-fiber clothing in all color and pattern options, not just “slimming black”. I do want to encourage all women who want to lose weight for whatever reasons: it’s difficult, but it’s not impossible, just keep trying to make small improvements towards a healthier lifestyle and don’t be discouraged! I’m 64 and lost 50 lbs. over a few years with a combination of daily walks and the elimination of sugar and simple carbs. (grains and root veggies, I still eat fruit) from my diet. You will live longer, feel better and have much more fun getting dressed, it’s well worth it🙂

      I agree so much with you. Overweight is not healthy and leads to much higher incidences of diabetes, heart decease and cancer. While is it true that our shape does change with age, child-bearing and menopause, it is not responsible to let ourselves get overweight. Marie-Anne's tips are very useful for disguising the thickening waistline even on people who are careful to maintain normal weight.

      Sigh. I think most of us know that about health and normal weight and how to achieve it under optimal conditions. However, a proportion of people gain weight with medications or through certain health conditions like thyroid or gut abnormalities or being unableto exercise. You might find a way to shed that weight or you may not. Meantime, you want to dress in a flattering way and would prefer not to be deemed greedy or lazy. I do not think it is helpful to tell people it is not responsible to gain weight, @alcogito8287. It was probably irresponsible of my ancestors to mix their DNA. Thank you for a non judgemental video, @Marianne.

Now very easily humans can be called "fat" /not pleasing the social-fashions (Korea+Japan are truly over the top, only bellow 50 kg are to be "beauties"). Will we ever stabilise mentally?!?! The shiny fabrics she mentions are not shiny. It depends on how the fabric was treated/dyed. The only exception is satin. That can be a little tricky to wear.
    Horizontal stripes can be worn so long as the blouse is fitted. If a dress has horizontal stripes, do not wear it because that will make you look wider.
