This was the last piece I worked on with my dear teacher before she passed away. I really needed her help to play it well, but the wonderful versions like this are guiding me.
It is so hard to capture absolute perfection in music. Brahms did it right here. Not a single note more or less is needed. Not one melodic line out of place, no filler notes. Simple perfection. Brahms got a few of these gems of intermezzi, but this one is the crown jewel.

I love your tempo here. I always think of andante as walking speed, but I'm a fast walker and so I end up playing andante too quickly. Your pace here really brings out the big-R Romantic quality of the piece and keeps the melodrama in check. I'm sort of hot and cold on Brahms (Scriabin's my guy), but I keep coming back to this intermezzo, and your rendition is for me ideal.
