- Chris Eldridge of the Punch Brothers talks to us about the tribute guitar for Tony Rice that will be auctioned on the Bourgeois Guitars website starting Monday December 1st for Tony's benefit, as he can no longer perform. It's really a tribute to Clarence White's guitar. The D-28 with the oversized sound hole. Tony tracked down and bought Clarence's guitar after Clarence was killed by a drunk driver. Much of Tony's playing is also a tribute to Clarence's playing.

This is a beautiful tribute. I really enjoyed it. I especially appreciate that your right hand is floating and not anchored on the guitar. That’s a much more difficult technique. Beautiful playing and singing.

Chris is my favorite flat picker. Special without going to a level of complexity that can be difficult for us mere mortals to listen to. The overall musical message always comes first with a bit of space for the mind of the listener.

I started listening Tony Rice along with David Grisman in 1978 and then I was 18 years old and living in Italy..........so far away.
Never stop listening this " New age grass " style music. I want to say no like others will all my respects. Sad to know that Tony Rice cannot longer perform but he must knows that he has many fellow musicians and follower out there appreciate him

I've watched this dozens of times now and I think Eldridge has a really great unique take on this tune. The way he reharmonizes and uses the crosspicking is just so cool. It's starting to become something unique to him I think (I know David Grier is also known for it). His playing is pretty traditional, but it is has something special to it.
And Chris is one of the nicest people out there. Total class act.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Tony several times and have heard him play this song on "58957" each time. Ist, Chris does a magnificent job capturing Tony's cross picking style and this tune in particular, 2nd, it is eerie how closely this guitar sounds like Tony's (granted, on a laptop from a utube download). Them folks up in Maine can sure build 'em! No surprise there.

Don't be fooled, Mr Martin and the folks at Santa Cruz would all be proud of this box. It will have a long useful life. Hope to be good enough to have one myself one day. Martins are the standard, but this is one beautiful sounding guitar.

I've played Tony Rice's D-28 several times. The tone that comes out of that guitar is because it's being played by Tony. Listen to Tone Poems where he plays many different guitars. They all sound like Tony Rice. This is a nice guitar and there are many good players. But there is only ONE Tony Rice!
+Raymond Eaton I heard that once about a great flute player, also thought about that idea when my cello was played by a skilled cellist. I think it makes a lot of sense.
+Raymond Eaton Someone with the talent can make an average guitar sound like a million dollars.....and talent and a great guitar is really sweet.
+Raymond Eaton What amazed me about "Tone Poems" is how much alike all the guitars sound. It's really in the hands of them player.
+ipmala I have two tortoise picks that Tony gave me from his own supply. In fact he made them himself. They are .050 (50thousandths) thick and are equal triangles that measure 15/16 inch from wide edge to point.
It's great to watch Chris Eldridge play because he loves music so much. He loves playing as much as people love to listen to him play.
I heard of Chris years ago from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. This is one of only a handful of times I've actually got to enjoy Chris playing. I'm the proud owner of a Santa Cruz Model D from 1984. This was before the Tony Rice models, I think, were introduced. I've played Collings, countless Martins, and other Santa Cruz and a few Bourgeois guitars.
I tell people this with all sincerity, the only guitars I ever played which I thought were as good as my 1984 Santa Cruz were other Santa Cruz guitars, and the two Dana Bourgeois dreadnoughts I've played.

I didn’t understand what he was saying when he described it, but as soon as he started playing I knew exactly what he meant. That guitar sounds closer to Tony’s than any guitar I’ve heard

Yes, they do seem to have reproduced that TR Martin box sound well. Great rendition of CSB there! That's quite an achievement. Wish I could play is as note-for-note perfect as that...

You're on the right track Chris. A great guitar is like a Great Violin, and those guys knew exactly how to Tune a violin to the Overtone Series. And it's not just the higher frequencies. When you play two notes you get the addition of frequencies and also the subtraction, so a lower note & a higher note, plus the two you are playing. This makes for a Wider and thicker note, plus more volume.

I've sampled the Bourgeois videos and nothing can take the place of Tony Rice singing with his guitar.
In his heyday I know he would switch the Santa Cruz replica of his D-28, which was louder, although audiences expected to see Clarence White's 1938 D-28 at some point in a show (roughly verbatim from Tony, mid 70s).

The guitar sounds great--unusually great. There are lots of replicas of Tony's guitar, and Critter knows more about them than just about anybody, having studied with Tony and spent some time with the original Holy Grail herringbone. Also…killer version of a classic tune.
Soooooooo much low end in that beast yet it still chimes!

Yes this guitar builder is outstanding and guitars sound and play AMAZING.However, upon actually finding a few of these instruments at Rudy’s Guitar Shop in Scarsdale New York, the prices STARTED at $7600. Now unless you are a member of the Eagles or The Dire Straights you may have to downgrade to $3550 dollar Martin D-28 guitars……….. Good luck! 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Rudy's music offers a great selection of our guitars, however we do have plenty of models that are much more attractively priced. If you are looking for something in the price range of the D-28, we recommend looking at our Touchstone Series Vintage/TS.
Great soundin guitar ( Bourgeois Guitars are loved by many artists ) and it does have some of the likenesses of the TR modified Martin imho.

beautiful playing-nice changing of the chords: well done. What is fascinating-is that the guitar does not sound like Tony's-that guitar has old dried resonance and mystical magic born of traveling and sweat. Played by a hell of a guitar player.

I did a search on this guitar - apparently it raised $10,000 at charity auction for Tony Rice.... $10K? That's it? If you bought a similar Bourgeous guitar at the shop it would cost that (assuming this guitar has Brazilian rosewood, etc)...
Sounds like Dana did manage to capture a lot of the qualities of that guitar. So much is in the player, but I can hear what he was going for. Are those Monel strings? Looks like them.
It's sounds nice, not quite the the guitar my Epiphone PR 150VS is but it's close....lol... Yeah right... Just kidding Dana... Your guitars make me lose sleep thinking about crafting a real instrument on day... I try to learn whatever I can from you guys.... I am curious what size your soundhole is... I hear on the internet that Tony's guitar was close to 4 5/8.. But it doesn't look completely symmetrical ... R.I.P. Mr Rice... Legendary to all of us...

Sounds pretty nice! Any Bourgeois owners know of a reputable shop in New England that I can get my Bourgeois vintage d repaired at? The bridge plate is coming unglued, but even though its only a few years old Bourgeois doesnt want to fix it because Im the second owner, which is a serious bummer, been looking for someone with some skill and insurance (lol) for over a year.
Get a hold of Randy Schartiger here on YT, he does some very fine work on old guitars.

"Ten thousand, we could almost get our own ship for that!" I mean, I'd reserve judgment until I actually played one of these beauties, but I would bet my life that there's no way the tone is enough of an improvement over, say, your run of the mill Martin or Taylor to justify that kind of difference in price.
Maybe. But a one-off to help Tony Rice? Someone would and did pay it.

I agree with several people who have commented on the TR/ Clarence D-28 that it is really much more tony than the guitar he plays that produces the magic of Rice's playing. In other words sorry, but you can't buy it. Tony has been nice enough to allow me to strum it on several occasions. It's a really nice 28, but I've heard several others it's equivalent or better, including the CW I own now {built 2012). We all, me especially, want the easy way out...the guitar. Hey, good old very hard work in the shed {plus a little talent} equals good playing. Bob Jackson
So I'm a classical guitarist trying to learn this song, and correct me if I'm wrong, but did you just fret the G# at 1:57 with your thumb?
Yup! Not to uncommon, but it takes some getting used to. It gives you more freedom to embellish over an F chord (or G# in this case with the capo) as opposed to playing a bar chord

I have read on Premier Guitar (online) that he uses Blue Chip picks. It does not mention the shape, thickness, or bevel.
