so after they shoot the RCS tanks, ODIN moves like 10 feet towards Earth and starts burning up in the atmosphere... oh yeah.. like LEO is a few feet above the fucking atmosphere, that makes total sense
that entire 7 or so minutes of space i was just holding my forehead thinking "everything here goes against physics, chemistry, and biology" but at the same time its such a cool 7 minutes of gameplay. XD
you wont hear an explosion in space in fact most sound is next to impossible to hear while floating around in a vacuum, fire need oxygen and almost everything is on fire while still outside of the atmosphere, the time it takes for everything to go from orbit to atmosphere where that much damage can be done is not even close to possible, blood spray would be much different given that heres no gravity in orbit, along with many other issues that i most likely missed. its a really good cutscene but completely unrealistic.
t1oxETy I know all those facts but in the video there aren't any scenes where you can hear the explosions in a vacuum. It makes sense for there to be fire as, while the fuel is ignited, so is the oxidiser used in the station. Most space stations are in very low orbits so even slight accelerations towards the periapsis can cause de-orbiting. I don't see how the damage is unrealistic and the blood spray is being caused by the velocity of the bullet so gravity wouldn't make much of a difference here.
Michealkinane There's an explosion when they destroy the RCS fuel lines. during their time outside there are tiny pieces of metal on fire but whether there is oxidizer on those pieces is unknown. I do know however that the time from the RCS explosion to re-entry is still not possible even if it was a big enough explosion to de-orbit Odin. lets just say we there's a good chance that either of us could be right given the little information we actually have.
t1oxETy Yeah, you're right, not much info is really given on Odin in the game. One mistake I saw however was that the knockback from the gun should have effected his momentum, even if it was just a slight movement.
Yep, each rod has the kinetic impact energy of a small asteroid. The only thing that makes it worse is that a satellite like Odin can pretty much deliver a strike anywhere on the planet, any time, with little energy, and repeat it in rapid succession. And once a rod is dropped, there's nothing that can stop it.
Why didnt they just shoot the RCS thrusters? If they were destroyed ODIN wouldnt be able to turn, resulting in it not being able to aim. And why did they have an entire station build around it. A cargo bay and living quarters would have been enough (about the size of the Russian salyut stations). Odin would be serviced a few times every year and after that it would be remote controlled from the ground. Most likely several stations would be built to have a more permanent coverage of the world. Also, I didnt see a deorbiting burn.
The Federation could have repaired the thrusters, given there were more federation troops in orbit and would have kept it. I assumed the explosions and the flash was the deorbiting burn
Yeah... Unless you are a noob at ksp. The deorbiting burn was the explosion & flash, because an explosion that big would be a nuke on earth. The shock from the explosion moves the station enough in order to deorbit it. As for permanant world coverage, you can always move into a retrograde orbit, and the thing would go back or forward in order to hit the target it needs. Any experienced KSP player knows this method of world coverage.
Sheesh, when the thing docked and the enemies came in, It was like SHE knew it was gonna happen as she started closing the door before the dude even had the chance to pull the trigger fully....
"RCS systems not responding" my ass, they're clearly working as they approach ODIN. the developers didn't really think this game through did they... the script writing for that ODIN scene was random phrases that sound cool but have nothing to do with the scenario

As a dead character, mind you, so you'd be unable to do anything. Way too boring for a video game. Unless it's KSP and you get to watch it explode.

venbrou 1. Well for one thing there is no easily defined "top of the atmosphere". 2. To maintain a orbit with any dose of practicality they would need to put these stations in an orbit of at least 300km above the earths surface to minimize atmospheric drag causing orbital decay. 3. I doubt that the RCS lines being blown caused a significant change in their orbit to the effect of rapidly deorbiting them considering the minimum reasonable altitude these stations could have been at. Especially considering that the explosion likely would have done nothing to slow their orbital velocity. 4. Assuming for some strange reason the explosion was sufficient to lower the stations orbit the atmospheric heating effect came into play far too rapidly. 5. The projectiles firing straight towards the earth is once again an awful way of actually getting it there. They should instead be fired retrograde. 6. I am not sure what the RCS is supposed to achieve burning in all 4 directions simultaneously the way it is but it isn't much. 7. While a gun would fire in space since modern smokeless powder is self oxidizing (or has an oxidizing agent added) Without a thruster pack designed to fire to counteract the forces of the gun you would likely be flying and flipping around when you fired. (Especially since they were firing their guns from the shoulder and not the CoM which is not ideal in space).
venbrou 1. When I watch the video it looks to me like ODIN was adjusting to point where the Projectiles were going. Which was not particularly retrograde at all. 2. Either way the Station should have been further back in its orbit as it looks as though it has already passed California. So all the targets in California are pretty much safe. As for the rest of the US targets they probably aren't very feasible at this point either as most of the Orbital velocity would have to be killed to get them on target. 3. It seems to me that just having just one ODIN station is impractical as hitting targets at different latitudes would require require inclination changes. 4. I assumed that the RCS was hypergolic in nature however given the way the ODIN projectiles are fired I question whether the RCS would be sufficient to counteract the the forces. 5. The plasma sheath is seemingly pointing the wrong way it makes it look like they are going toward the south east to me. However they should be falling to the northwest or maybe southwest but northwest would be more likely given the other targets listed. 6. I kind of left it out in my post about the guns that it was possible the thruster packs they were all wearing were compensating however there would have been some movement regardless. Finally me intent was not to imply that the game should have had better orbital mechanics my point was that the existing ones had some serious flaws. For a COD game its fine and some of the issues are obviously intentional to make for a cool sequence of events albeit not a realistic one.
Derek Wagner What about a kill switch? I mean if the ODIN station was overrunned and the ODIN crew lost it shouldn't the Air Force launch a missle to blow the ODIN up or have a self destructing button for the guys on Earth to push thats a fall back plan if guys from Nasa dont have a fall back plan since there is vunerability in space due to the attack from the fedearation than your an idiot plain and simple.
