Your one of a kind. ❤ 6 years ago my Chihuaha was hit by a truck and her pelvis was shattered. One vet told me to put her down. I drove her to another vet. They said 10,000 to fix her pelvis. I drove 2 hours away to ANOTHER vet - who told me she would heal on her own and she came home after 4 days. With lots of care at home from me Today, she’s a healthy 12 year old dog who lived and is thriving 😊

I agree 100% with this lady. My short story... Took my dog to the vet $280.00 and sent to an animal hospital. She was a sugar diabetic with pancreatitis problems. Six days later and $8080.00 later she came home with insulin and needles to give shots twice a day. Three days later she quit eating again and back to the hospital. They said she needed the same treatment with a 50% success chance. I wasn't putting her back thru that again and had her put to sleep while holding her in my arms. I brought her home and buried her out back on my place. And yes grown men do cry.....

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your sweet dog. I'm going through this right now. Just found out my dog, Millie is diabetic. Also, she has an extremely elevated PSL of 2132 which indicates she has pancreatitis. Instead of treating her, my vet wants to do an ultrasound (I've read costs anywhere from $400-1000). I think the result of the test speaks for its self. I'm a nurse and I know about lab tests. I'm at my wits end on what to do. I honestly don't know if I can afford all this. Right now I'm waiting for a nurse to call me back with estimates for everything. I'm heartbroken and so sad. Millie is also being treated for a multi bacterial urinary tract infection. She also has worsening dementia and arthritis.

It's because so many vets don't want to work with the pet guardians anymore, they just want us to pay and to never question anything or be given the options to make an informed decision. I get that it's busy and everyone is stressed, but we are all supposed to be working together for the wellbeing of our pets whom we love dearly. It violates trust when the vet industry doesn't make us the guardians part of the healthcare team. Love what you do, you're awesome 💜

I’m in Australia and I was denied treated by for a sick cat that simply needed antibiotics they wanted to charge me 300$ on top of $90 consult fee. I don’t even understand why a consult is so expensive to be honest. Then they want to clutch their pearls when animals suffer that need treatment but it’s really on them for making prices so prohibitive.

Please look for someone else. One of my 2 fur babies died and the partial reason was because my vet would charge me for breathing (payment in full only), so now i'm jobless it was terrifying. I saw my cat a bit sick but I though the solution was add wet food.
Long story short, my cat got intoxicated and died and now i'm having my other cat in ANOTHER vet.
Partly because this vet knew my kitties their whole life and only said "ou too bad, hopefully this one won't die"
Having a vet you trust is SUPER important. She wasn't that mean with everyone, just me but now my cat is changing vet, cat food and litter. All for her wellbeing.
The vet I now have is, well, is black and white the difference. You can tell she actually cares and takes time to explain things to me even when busy :)

My dog died a few years ago because i couldnt afford the 2 grand they wanted to keep her hooked up to fluids over night. When she died i called to see where i had to take her now that she had passed. They said i either wait the weekend and keep her in our freezer and bring her in that monday or pay them 2 grand to come pick her up during the weekend. I felt robbed and helpless and I miss my dog and feel like that could have been prevented had they been willing to workout some kind of payment plan with me. She would be 3 this year

GREED !! My dog has a growth on his foot looks like a little bubble with puss or something in it. Anyway First holistic vet charged 78.00 for just drawing out with a needle some of the matter. She sent it to a lab. So the lab and 10 min visit cost me $248.00 that was lab visit on top the 78.00. When results came back she said it was benign no cancer.
After the visit whe gave me a card for a Vet surgeon, I went to him today 9/5/23 and he came in looked at it2mins top (no charge for that) Then he came back with the estimate of 800.00 to 1,500 to remove a small growth on my dogs rear foot.
That blew me away. what happened as you say 30 yrs ago when it was affordable. Has GREED captured the hearts away from practical pricing. It's getting to the point like charging what Human hospitals charge. I guess it a fast way to get what they want for a confortable life and living in a higher class neighborhood.
I agree there has to be more affordable ways for people that live on ssd or just low income, but it seems they don't really care. Only what they can put in their pockets.

My kitty just got out of the vet. He was very sick, dehydrated from not eating or drinking, and with a fever of almost 106. They hospitalized him in the morning, did blood work, gave him one IV bag of lactated ringers, have him a shot of antibiotics, and a shot of cerenia, then sent him home with a week of liquid antibiotics. All together, it ran me 600.
They never found out what is wrong so he's undiagnosed. All I know is that he's improving with antibiotics so I don't think a diagnosis is needed.
They wanted to do more, one thing was an ultrasound, but I declined. They wanted to give me a diagnosis, I only wanted a treatment that made him feel better. It could have cost a lot more. they were running through a list of diagnostics trying to find out what he had, but I knew how to say no.
He's doing a bit better now, but he's not well yet. He hasn't pottied yet.

This is happening right now to me. I have a 5 year old cat that was denied at his vet bc we didn’t have an appointment (but it claims to offer emergency services) and there was only 1 doctor on staff so they told us to go to another clinic. I’m at the 5th hospital. The last one I went (8/10/22) to I was charged $1,500+ and they still wanted to charge me $2,700+ for a day/night of hospitalization. They diagnosed him with fever- 106, dehydration, pancreatitis, and possible pneumonia. Jumping to now (8/12/23) I got up at 5 something am to go to the cheapest animal hospital (4th) near me and was told they weren’t emergencies (my cat was in DIRE condition by this point even after getting him medication+antibiotics form the 3rd hospital). I’m crying my eyes out because now (5th hospital) I’m at the same branch that charged me a lot of money that I really don’t have. I don’t know what’s going to happen but I hope I can still stand on whatever limbs I have left after all these bills. Good luck to you too, I hope your kitty is doing well even after all these years!

I had a cat dying of anemia one night. We drove her to the one er that was open that late (which of course none of them are ever open that late) They looked over her and told us about the anemia and later gave us the price.
In order to perform a blood transplant and keep her overnight, they wanted $6,000 all upfront with no payment plans. My mom who btw is a daycare teacher and only makes like $10 an hour of course could not afford that.
So they gave us an antibiotic for $500 (what a surprise) and we gave her the daily doses at the exact times she needed it.
    She died the next day.

I found another vet who charged $850 to remove her mass that ended up not being cancerous. I’m advising my son not to get a dog because the cost for care is too expensive. The cost of vet care will discourage people from adopting animals that need homes. The cost for animals is expensive when you factor in food, grooming, etc. keep up the good work

Thank you so much for standing up to pet medical bills and cost. I 100% agree. My fur baby Henry had to be euthanized on 04/02/2022 because we were only given the only to have a $6500-$12000 surgery or to euthanize him for $300. The price difference makes me so mad and angry. Keep in mind that I called over 6 other clinics and every clinic was not able to do the surgery for a lower rate. DoveLewis was my only option and even they knew that and at the end of it my husband had to make the call to euthanize Henry. I will never get over this and I feel so empty now that my fur baby Henry is gone. I hope that this video makes an impact in this world.

    • @MovieMakingMan

Why do they charge so much to euthanize animals? In 1992 a vet gave me pills free so I could euthanize my pet. We took my dog to my parent’s house in the country where my dog loved it. So my girlfriend and I took him there and gave him the pills. Now euthanizing pets is a racket where they charge hundreds and even thousands! These people are thieves. They are predators. If someone had to be paid $1000 to act sympathetic while they are killing your pet that person is incapable of empathy or compassion. I’m so sick of so many people obsessed with taking as much money from others as they can. They’re nothing less than sociopaths.

I'm in the UK and it genuinely feels that vets care more about money than animal welfare now. Prices are seriously out of control for all animals but small pets are horrendous, the prices for my guinea pig are quadruple that of my dog and its insane. I just had to put my guinea pig down because I couldn't afford the £300 minimum quote they gave me just for 24 hour hospitalisation with one xray and meds (she had a URI). I asked for a payment plan and they flat out refused. I have already spent over £200 last week for that same piggie and £300 last month on another piggie, I've literally spent tens of thousands at this vet over the years, guinea pigs are so expensive. They were cold and apathetic to the fact my piggie was suffering, if you don't have the money upfront then they don't want to know, your animal can suffer and die for all they care while you watch and they hope you feel like crap because you couldn't pay, that's the vibe they gave me.
I thought vets were supposed to love and put animals first, I guess that has drastically changed. The saddest part is how many other pets have been needlesley euthanized or died just because the owner didn't have the money at the time? It could've been something easily treatable, but they put the animal down regardless, that's just as bad as putting a healthy animal down in my opinion. I understand that owners shouldn't get pets if they can't afford it, but the issue is vet prices are so high that next to nobody can afford it these days. What will vets do when nobody wants to own pets anymore because they can't afford it? It's just so sad and infuriating. I understand they have a business to run and are all probably in serious debt, but that's not mine or my animals fault. They are also losing a lot of potential money by turning clients away too, most owners love their pets and will pay the money when agreed, turn them away and vets lose that client/income completely. The client will probably never go back there either after being treated like that. It's just horrible, I really hope something changes. Thank you for this video, it's nice to see a vet who cares about this issue and wants to help people and their pets.

I have gotten a puppy and only had him for about 2 months, I had a great vet, but with the hours I work I had to find a different one to be able to fix my schedule. With no symptoms of being ill, they said my pup had a “faint” line of having parvo, and I said what does that mean, and they are like well he has parvo and you would have to treat him right away. In vet was 1200 and at home was about 600, I thought with them taking him those 3 days would definitely do better than what I can do at home so I did let them take care of him. Took him home day before thanksgiving and he was happy upy hungry, he was eating fine drinking fine for 3 days then boom, he didn’t want to eat or drink had diarrhea really bad and it was the first time I seen he threw up. I went to work thinking hopefully he will eat and drink his pedeiolyte, and I got pics from my wife with blood throw up, so I rushed home tried to force feed pediolyte, but he just was moping around so I took him to the er. They said in his condition it’s going to be 600 to do what we need to do just to get him to respond better, and put a little more life in him. So of course I said ok. While in the parking lot, vet doctor calls and said he’s not doing so well, we need to keep him in here and for what we need to do it will probably be 2000 to 4500 on top of the 600 I just paid. It was that or put him down. I was devastated, going broke, and knew I couldn’t afford it. So my family and I had to put our 3 month puppy to sleep. We all wanted to say bye, but not see the procedure, he was just looking at me, and with all the meds they gave him made it seemed like he was more alert.. but the outrageous bill, I just couldn’t afford and it kills me to know that money was the reason I couldn’t help my dog live.

They went from the rash to sedating him to put ear drops in his ears. The total bill would have been $725 I was shocked. I am going back to my old vet twenty mikes away. I just needed some ointment for his rash. This is a retirement community too...robbing people blind.

There are other vets that are good also. I had a rabbit dieing from dental issues. My vet offered sample meds. Taught me about honey. She literally let me leave owning money- trusting me- and, she saved my rabbit. This went on for a year almost weekly with biweekly surgeries. Each visit, including surgeries, was 200 to 400 a visit including meds. In the end, she spent a week taking care of my rabbit in the hospital day and night until I had to put her to sleep from vestibular disease caused by the dental condition. My vet paid everything up front plus cremation and a special box. 7 days of 24 hr care, cremation, putting her to sleep- everything- I owed her 900.
I now have a bonded pair of rabbits. She is the only vet I will take them to.

I had a cat that had a bladder blockage, it would be 800 for the surgery. The vets in the area dont do payment plans. But they do payment plans if you put them down. Unfortunity we had to put him down.

I’m really starting to hate veterinarians. Like i get it. They want to make money. But like more and more people are just not even dealing with having pets because if they get sick, the prices are ridiculous. I jad a blockage and it costs me $1,600. My pup has a blockage and its $2,000… and they dont do payment plans…

Yesterday a young mom had to put her 2 year old cat down because the ER didn't give her the proper meds she needed to keep her cat unblocked. This poor boy was blocked on a Monday, unblocked, then sent home with Gabapentin only, Wednesday he reblocked, unblocked and sent home with Gabapentin, then Friday he blocked and refused treatment from the er because this 24 year old woman didn't pay off the second blocking bill yet. They offered her euthanasia. It is inhumane! It was THEIR fault for not giving this cat Buprenorphine and Prazosin! I moderate a urinary group and see this happen way too often. Thank you for being their angel.

I was told my dog had a luxating elbow and needed immediate surgery. She had a dislocated should, had immediately surgery, sent home without pain meds, nor did they answer the phone all night long, the pin slipped and she had her leg amputated during the second surgery. The first surgery cost me $5,000, and after they did the surgery sent her home w/o pain meds, they told me after 5 pm they were no longer responsible for my dog. This was Animal Medical Center on Commercial Blvd, Lauderhill, Fla. I paid $5,000.00 to save her leg, not to have my beautiful, sweet Pom lose her leg due to the cold, cruel attitude of the vet clinic. I now hear other horror stories about that place and I warn anyone who has a pet not to go there. The original quote for the surgery was $3,600 which turned into over $5,000.00 and the loss of my dogs leg. They even charged $250.00 for an antibiotic shot prior to her surgery. No proper follow up instructions were given, and my dog had a post operative infection due to the negligence of this clinic. Dr. Waters wanted to charge me over $100.00 for an antibiotic injection. Since I am an elderly, disabled woman, and already gave them $5,000.00, I could not afford the $100.00 antibiotic injection for a post operative infection that was caused by improper discharge care from that office. The vet finally agreed to give me a prescription for oral antibiotics, which cost me $19.00 not $100.00. Months later I am still so appalled by the cold indifference of this clinic. I wish I had found a doctor like you, instead of the cold, careless vets, who left my dog with life long disability.

Thank you for the video. I've spent about $2700 on my cat in the past week, and the jury is still out if she will even recover, or it there is more money to pay for more resources and medicines, etc. To give context: she had a dental , and then went back home but she didn't respond to it so I had to take her back, only to discover other issues. I want so bad for her to live, but it's like the vet puts us into a no win situation financially if we are in a life or death situation. I think the vets honestly put cat or dog owners into financial debt for years. Thank you so much for your honesty !

We said that’s slot and they said they wouldn’t start anything till they got the money! So we had to open up a care credit card snd now we are paying triple !! Yesterday I brought my 9 week old puppy who was stepped on my the neighbor accidentally and he suffered a femur break n I was told 3000$ I called 40 vets and none would give me a payment plan I called charities n none would help because he’s not fixed and I was sent homr with pain meds for him and was given the option pay upfront for sign him over and they will fix him and rehome him. I’m appalled at the treatment I’ve received in Idaho with no other options I’m now forced to give my puppy up. I have 4 kids a nurse who had to stop working durring the pandemic because of my 4 year old having asthma and I’m told to give up the first dog I’ve had in 5 years after my beloved childhood dog passed away and it took me 5 years to let myself love another dog because of the heartbreak I went through. We took her to the vet really late at night and they refused us because we had literally no money. We took her to another place. They took her from us and informed us later that she died. My mom beleic6they didn't do anything for her because we had no money. I can say rn that owning a pet while being poor is the hardest thing ever.

I said this dog doesn't have 8 days and they didn't seem to care. I put my dog down the next day because she had withered away to nothing and was starving before my very eyes.

I just got home from trying to find an emergency vet that wouldn’t gouge me. My cat was vomiting and lethargic, so I took him in.
Out West in Little Rock AR wanted $929 for initial diagnostics and then $3500 for a surgery to remove an intestinal blockage. The overnight care would probably have stacked on another $1000.
Took him to a different vet who took him in as an emergency, and even with their emergency fee, everything worked out to be $1500 for a deposit, which they say they may not actually need to use all of (aka I could get some refunded). They saw the blockage and don’t even think it will need surgery. So Out West was totally willing to slice into my cat for no reason. Absolutely sickening. When he’s home from the vet, I can provide receipts.
Emergency vets make me absolutely sick to my stomach. $5000+ for a common cat issue is absolutely evil.

I have had this happen to me at SO MANY vet clinics that I’ve become very untrusting and resentful of vets in general. I consider them to be as scammy an dishonest as mechanics and car salesmen. I NEVER approve anything until I see an itemized quote and make them go over every single thing on it and explain the reason behind why it’s on there and what it’s for. Every single time I catch them red handed running up the bill with unnecessary tests, blood work, shots, and misc things I don’t need, want or ask for. I live in Southern California so prices in general are going to be more expensive then other areas, and i get that however - just recently for example I needed to get my cat neutered and mind you I’ve had cats all my life, I know what it should cost so you can image my disbelief when this absolute JOKE of a clinic called Valencia Veterinary Center quoted me $700 to do it!!! 🤯
I was completely outraged and disgusted. When I asked why it was so outrageously expensive they said, ‘our doctor REQUIRES you to get a first time patient/pre-surgery exam and REQUIRES you to get blood tests done or they won’t do it.’ I was like well good luck with that you greedy bastards but I’m not stupid, and I’m not paying more than $150 out the door. Needless to say I went somewhere else and they did it for a very fair and reasonable price of $115 no pre exam or blood tests ‘required’ lol.

I am very disappointed in a vet in my home town. I had a 10 yo havanese with breast cancer. The front office girl made it clear that they would not do the surgery unless we caught up the vaccinations on our indoor pet of all of 11 pounds. She couldnt get the idea that the vaccines would have killed my dog in her present state of health. When I made a stink, the Dr came out and agreed to do the surgery without the vaccines. Thank goodness she changed her mind. We got another 3 years out of the old girl and did not vaccinate her after that. Wacko vet techs that have a IQ of 65 deciding which pets will live or die. She should go back to beauty school.
On vaccines, my german shorthair 12 yrs old had to be boarded for a weekend. The kennel insisted all shots were up to date. He got two sets two weeks apart in May. He was dead that following August. He was in perfect health, never sick his whole life, never overweight. He always got the rabies shot before hunting up to 8 yrs old but arthritis ended that. What happened to the good vets who swore to do no harm?

Well said! The Veterinary Profession has lost sight of its own existence. They collaborate with colleagues in an area & set prices! It didn’t work for Ma Bell & it won’t work here either. I foresee an implosion on the horizon as the Middle Class shrinks so will their beloved pet budget. Everything you have mentioned is the canary in the coal mine; pun intended. THANK YOU THANK YOU!! My Kiko(black Labrador retriever) swallowed (I saw it go down) a small mini tennis ball. Eastside Vet, Newcastle WA. Wanted to charge me over $1000 but I cut 3 X-rays and a radiograph specialist consultation to one X-ray so I ended up paying $800 for one X-ray and no consultation to get him to throw the ball up which I could’ve tried using hydrogen peroxide with NO RESULTS! So they referred me to Blue Pearl, Renton, WA. For a $4000 endoscopy! Which everyone says it would be a difficult endoscopy (with no % on chances it’ll be successful. So I’m now electing to just go straight to surgery.
Also went to South Seattle Vet hospital who charged me $450 for blood work. Then they changed their estimate for surgery (since he couldn’t give me any confidence that he cud do it endoscopically. However were glad to take my money anyway! Knowing that kiko would probably have to have surgery. So they trapped me thinking I’d go to them either way since I already spent money here (South Seattle Vet Hospital was the worse out of the 2 vets!! Scammers to the max!! U cud tell it was all about squeezing money out of me rather than care for my dog.
    ITS HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!
So now I have to do surgery for the ball in Kiko’s stomach for $$$$?? Please tell me how much you think it shud be as I search for my Kiko!
OMG!! I’m hating life right now!! Kiko is EVERYTHING IVE GOT! Not working living in a trailer.

I know it is over 5 years since this video post, but I the vet/expense situation is only getting worse!!!
We just had to put our Tokio down. A cute, loving Maltese mix. She was attacked by a coyote in Calgary, Canada.
We rushed her to an animal hospital. They started with stabilizing her, woodwork, X-rays, painkillers, oxygen, pulse monitors. The works. They also informed us right away that this could be costly. First the vet said $3-5000. Later $10.000 or $20.000.
Not much of diagnosis after the X-rays, just two broken ribs. We were told for further diagnostics we would have to go to another emergency clinic, they needed to do a CT scan to see the damage in the soft tissue. Tokio had several puncture wounds on her neck, rib cage, chest and abdomen.
Even with all the equipment and drugs she was breathing and panting laboriously. The nurse told us they turned her from one side onto the other and then blood would run out of the puncture wounds.
So I assume, as an uneducated pet owner, that there must be a lot internal bleeding. This is why they needed a CT. But time was of the essence.
The other animal Hospital quoted us $8000-9000 to get the dog transferred within the City of Calgary, to get her stabilized, anesthetized and intubated for the CT Scan all the doctors fees, $1800 alone for the "reading or interpreting" by specialists of the X-rays and CT scan!
You need a credit card where they charge $5000 before they even come to move the dog. Nobody dared give a prognosis.
On top there is the $1000 charge for the first hospital for 4 hours and the initial stabilization.
We had to make a decision NOW!
But what if after the diagnosis we still had to put her down?
What if, after the diagnosis, surgery was possible but cost another $10.000-20.000? Who the heck can afford that?????
What if the dog dies on the operating table?
What if the dog has still permanent health problems after a "successful" surgery?
So we decided with the heaviest of hearts to let her go. At least she did not suffer long. How long would she have suffered after surgery?
    We are heart broken!
Its all about money. But we simply cannot spend a potential 30k for our beloved dog. Who can????
To me it seems they try to squeeze out that last dollar!
Why did the first hospital not send us right on to the specialized Clinic?
Coudn't they just start surgery to find and close the internal bleeding?
Why did my husband do a CT scan on his thyroid with contrast fluid paid for privately at $600 but for our dog it is $10.000?????????
    WHY????

My cat fell from on top of a wardrobe. He hurt his back, and they wanted $2000 for an MRI. I was also quoted, $10,000 for surgery. I took their information and said I would discuss it with my husband. We never went back, and it took about six months for our cat to recover. He lived another six happy years racing through the house at breakneck speed. Some Vets are greedy. This is the reason we don't have any more pets. It's just too expensive.

I paid $1k yesterday for diagnostic for my cat , Mr. Claw, who seemed to have an intestinal blockage. $300 xray, the rest blood work, combo test, etc, and xray didnt show a definite problem, but he had so much inflammation, protein in his urine, creatine, high, so many things wrong.
At midnight, the options were a referral to an Emergency Hospital to push IV fluids, or take him home with SubQ fluids and try to make him eat some expensive prescription food to try to get his gut moving and come back for xray.
. Next mornings $300 xray showed the same thing, and an additional estimate for $3-4K for exploratory surgery to find the cause of the intestinal blockage but Mr. Claw didn't even survive the anesthesia. He had cancer through his lung, abdomen and pancreas which didn't show itself until a necropsy was done. overall I think I spend around $2k and because I was willing to spend more for he surgery, instead of euthanizing him, his last moments were with strangers instead of with me hugging him. I feel bad because I was willing to PAY the money and still gave my boy a bad ending. If I had just euthanized him, he could have passed softly while being petting. I asked him if he was ready to die today, and said I'll be back for you, and everything will be okay, but I was wrong. I didn't want him to suffer and yet he did.
It's kinda, I feel the opposite now, i think. Maybe I should consider euthanization in the future instead of treatments cuz at least I know they will fall asleep with me, and not in a strange cold room with strangers and no guarantee of coming back to me.

Just yesterday on 11-27-2023 my wife and I made the decision to have our French Bulldog put down because after driving all over the St.Louis metro area and not having any luck finding anyone who was willing to do the procedure. Everyone said for us to go to Veterinary Specialists Services. So I took Fletcher to them and they said yeah we can fix him up but the bill for the procedure is going to be anywhere from 7 to 10 thousand dollars. I almost swallowed my heart, I couldn’t believe it. I then asked the doctor if I chose to go ahead with the surgery can you give me assurance that this will permanently solve the issue? She said unfortunately no, she said that a year or two years later he could develop gollstones again. In which case that would be ANOTHER 7 to 10 thousand dollars. I’m like this is ridiculous. I asked could they go through the penis and up through the urethra and either grab the stones and pull them out or use the medical device that uses high intensity shockwave to shatter them and then give him plenty of fluids to help him pass the rest of what’s left out of his urinary tract. She said no, they don’t do that. She said that they would sedate him and then make an incision in his abdomen and then go in reverse down through the urethra down to the tip of his penis which would then allow him to properly urinate. Grant you I’m certainly not a doctor, but I have a very good idea of how things work and that seemed to me like it was ass backwards. Instead of something that should theoretically only take maybe a hour Tops, they indicated that OH NO THIS IS A VERY INVASIVE SURGERY. Anyway I lost it, I started to cry because I felt so helpless in that moment. Essentially they said in a nice way, you either pay the 7 to 10 thousand dollars or there’s the door. This was down to the wire, he literally was unable to urinate at all. I felt so sorry for him. There was nothing that I could do for him. So our regular veterinary doctor said that the most humane thing to do was to put him to sleep., this is actually making me cry as I’m writing this, so last night we had our vet do the procedure and he passed away. That was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do as an adult. And now I have this guilt that I was the one who made the decision to end his life. I feel so terrible. I loved him so much. He was only two years old. His name was “Fletcher “ . I’m really having a difficult time with making the decision to end his life. Seems so unfair. If you are reading this please do your research and ask for references and past health history of the parents of whatever dog you choose and from day one when you bring the puppy home make sure that you get the very best health insurance because whether it’s a French Bulldog or whatever, veterinary services in America are no joke. They can set the cost as high as they want and either you pay for any surgical procedure or you essentially are sent packing. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you are more lucky than I am. I love you Fletcher.
    RIP

I know this video is old now but I want to say thank you for speaking up against the travesty of high veterinary cost. I'm fortunate that I have a local vet here in Indiana the Knox Veterinary Clinic, Dr Hines that is affordable. But there has been a few times when something would happen to one of my seniors when our vet was closed and I would have to go to Purdue North Central Emergency Vet knowing it was going to cost a small fortune. I had a senior Rat Terrier named Jewels her health suddenly went bad I rushed her to the emergency vet they told me near $900 to do the test. I told them I'm not made of money and they came down $150 on the price. Then they did the test and told me she need to be put to sleep....then the price went right back to near $900. So it cost me near $900 to tell me I had to put my little girl down. There are some vets that make a good living and nothing wrong with that, then there are some getting wealthy. The system is broke and many poor pups and their parents are suffering from it 😔

I took my Shepherd to an ER clinic on Sunday, because of a heat stroke.
They said would be 8 thousand dollars, and they need the money in full up front before touching my dog.

Hi Doctor Krista. Today 12-27-2020 my dog is in severe pain when walking. I had a barbebue party with my family on christmas day and i did give him a bone from the chicken we were eating. I am not sure if maybe the bone broke inside his stomach and maybe is hurting him. Also my dog suffers from seizures and he gets very stiff, he does a 360 degree turn upside down and falls flat on his head, then turns sideways and starts shaking a lot and he's tobgue sticks out and eh starts to drool a lot. I get very scare and have not taking him to a vet. I love him so much and i feel so guilty that I don't have the money to afford a vet to look at him and pay expensive x-rays and blood work tests. Today he was crying alot just walking to see me but his tail is wiggling like he's happy to see me but at the same time crying when i touch him. What can i do? Please help me! Thank you soooo much Doctor Krista!

you are 1 in a million indeed, unfortunatly we can rant, carry posters etc. but things just wont change in todays world I laud your efforts Its the same with hman doctors and the entire medical system, ...if you havent the money, your turned away or treated like garbage, Vets. or M d's, it all comes to economics.I spent thousands on a sick pet with hope my pet would be better, but he died in th end , being on a Gov. pension myself I had to use my saving which left me broke, why do vets charge so much.In Canada prices are higher.

I'm a vet. I agree 100%! The corporate practices are price gouging. Corporate greed is destroying this profession. My practice I've butted heads with the corporate owned ER many times. They wanted $8,000 for a splenectomy. I can do a splenectomy in 40 minutes and for less than $1,200. They charged a client $800 for a puppy with kennel cough. I'm semi-retired now but I am against the corporate take-over of this profession.

Thank you doctor. We have a little Boston Terrier/Pug mix who has been exhibiting symptoms of what I suspect is IVDD. Through her primary vet, we tried bed rest and Rymadil. When that didn’t work, they tried her on a high dose of Prednisone. When that still wasn’t working, they added (just last night) Gabapentin in conjunction with the prednisone (5mg 2x/day). The vet told us the next step with her needs to be a consult with a neurologist, and that we should prepare for the possibility that she’s going to need spinal surgery. As you can probably imagine, the mere idea of it has us all very anxious. But if it will help her, then I’m willing to do whatever it takes. If it’s helpful, I’ll post the estimated/actual expenses once all is said and done (we’re in MA). Thank you for your videos-they have been extremely informative and helpful.

      K. L-S I went through that too ivdd from jumping on my high bed. Prednisone worked but it was the first sign so no surgery but possibly in the future. I bought steps so he doesn’t jump anymore. Hope all went well with your little nugget

newsense3000 thanks for your reply! We ended up having to go through with surgery not once but twice in the past 2 years. They performed what they called a ventral slot procedure, which removes portions of herniated disc. Poor sweet pup is braver than I’ll ever be! Her most recent surgery was last October (2019), and she’s been better since then. The thing to remember about surgery is that with each one, the likelihood of additional herniated discs increases. So we were fearful of it happening again after the first one. But when it did, we were prepared. Now with another surgery under her belt, we’re again just doing everything we can to minimize her risks (while at the same time remembering that she’s a 10 year old dog that still wants to be a dog). But for now, she’s pain free, and we’re all making the most of the time we have to snuggle, get some fresh air, and shower each other with love! Take care, and give that pup a pat for us!

This one vet addressed this issue. Thank you!
I've been kind of fortunate with a vet I've had for years.
But, holy crap what is going on over the last two years? The inflation on the routine annuals like vaccines and a simple heartworm test has gone up. $70 for a hw test that is absolutely necessary every 6-12 months in the US South? It has been awhile but I can recall paying about $38 per HW test. What's with the pharmaceutical prices? Here I go again on the heartworm thing! So, Heartgard has been around for YEARS!!!! Why does it cost what it costs? You would think heartworm monthly prevention like this would be considered *essential* in HW endemic areas ???? Some of you might think $14 per monthly Heartgard dose is nothing? It isn't much unless someone has multiple dogs. I'm now reading that according to some integrated vets, using this "poison" every month is not necessary. Their protocol for preventing HW disease is to control mosquitoes and do a HW test every 6 months. Anyways, given how often I see heartworms in dogs throughout the US South, I can't believe that HW tests and a monthly preventative is still priced high. Of course I will get this done for my dogs but in the US South I know that sadly many will do nothing. Go look at animal shelters. Dogs suffering from (preventable) heartworms is numerous! Those dogs have to now undergo HW treatment which may or may not be successful. If any of you have seen what HW's do, it's hell! Preventable hell.
I've unfortunately heard of some insane veterinary bills lately. Forget $4k !!! I'm noticing $10k for parvo treatment (thankfully successful!). I've seen even larger vet bills than this.
Why are general practice vets charging $100+ per office visit? Nope, not a specialist vet, not an exotics vet. That's for small animal dogs/cats. I'm lucky I don't pay that, but it's not uncommon. My vet charges $50 per visit. It used to be $25 per visit before 2020. What on earth happened (other than bizarre inflation)??? Is there really a vet shortage issue going on???
Why the heck does spay/neuter cost so much higher in some places vs others? I've seen price quotes nearly $900-$1k in the Northeast around Rhode Island for a routine spay/neuter. I can understand that anesthesia risks may be an issue in some dogs. That's why you do bloodwork prior to. My vet is super fair on this. Prices for a spay are generally about $350 at the most. Neuter runs about $250. I find this to be a good deal. Personally I want everything monitored even if it's a routine surgery some vets can do in their sleep.
I've had good experiences at university vet hospitals for various diagnostics and surgeries. No issues there. Nothing over $8,000
Vaccines are kind of stupid priced too. I've seen a basic Rabies vax increase. What's the deal with this Canine flu vaccine that requires a first shot and a booster a few weeks later? That vaccine is over $90. Fine if you're just doing ONE vaccine on ONE dog. But if you have multiples!!!!??? Oh no!!!! This is why people cannot adopt more dogs (maybe a sponsored adoption is a possibility? Shelter/rescue funds that dog's vet care or offers the adopter a much lower cost for vet treatment?? Just an idea.
My annual visit full cost for each dog is $300 now.
It was just under $190 before 2020
    That's quite a price hike!
A few years ago, I didn't ask itemized prices on everything at my vet. Now I do. I've called around to get prices on vaccines, HW tests, on and on. Let me just say that prices greatly vary and it is wacky. There may be a bit of quality control reasons behind higher prices. Some vet clinics tell me their vaccine and HW prices fluctuate based on whatever current lab test and pharmaceutical pricing may be.
I'm not at all expecting vets to be dirt cheap. I want vets to use my money I give them for investing in their clinic. I'm fine with paying so my vet can retain clinic staff and all of that. They've got to pay people, folks. However, some of this is so looking like either pure greed or omg, I'm a vet with lifelong student loans and now all I think about is *money* ???? It's either/or. We have a problem system. I don't think it's just vets screwing people over. They would lose business. The pharmaceutical side of things has got to be causing problems. Inflation is another. Also yeah, veterinarians freakishly outlandish student loan debt? I'm shocked every time I hear it!
Just check the parking lot. If you see a Porsche in the DVM's spot, you have your answer. 🤣
If it's a Toyota, good. If it's a truck of some kind, that's also normal.
I've had my best experiences with large animal equine and farm vets. If you all can find an old school rural farm vet, get one. Avoid the mega-city boutique type vets. I had one charge me up the behind for some wonky acupuncture and homeopathic crap. I went one time. That was it. I"m not saying acupuncture is hogwash. I'm not sure. But that clinic obviously spent the most money on creating a pretty office, and not much else. The vet was unusual trying to sell me on all kinds of essential flowery this and that and it cures everything CBD oil.

A vet in Tilbury said $800.00 for teeth cleaning. Another vet in Belle River said to me when I said I needed the chew able for heart-worm but not the test because my pet had the test the last few years. He said do you not care about your animal at all. Rabies shot is 100.00 and I know they are good for 3 years or more. I read it in the journals but he won't listen to me . I worked for a Vet for 12 years when I was younger and I get treated like I am stupid.

Oh Krista, where do I begin. My Chihuahua/Pug Chico had puppies with our friend’s Chihuahua. As a matter fact I’m going to have the owner of Sancho put her story in. I told her to talk loud, call the news. Lets just say, a family is devastated, the kids everyone. No options, the vet at this place said she will pay out of her pocket but she was going to keep Sancho. They all cried it was so hard. Why did this have to happen. So please look out for their story about sancho

This is sooo sad! My dog is struggling right now with swollen glands and looking dizzy as heck because I can't afford veterinarian care. I called all the vets in my area (Milwaukee WI) and not one will see him without payment upfront. They act like I just wanted free vet care or something, but I'm just broke at the moment! It really makes me feel like a horrible pet owner in the meantime! And I'm just hoping that it doesn't get worse before he is seen! I've applied for Care credit and was declined immediately and so I also created a Go fund me but it's not easy getting donations on there either! I just don't know what else to do! But seeing this video made me feel better knowing that there are people out there that really do care for our precious pets because a lot of vets out there just don't seem to have any compassion! Thank you for really caring! And we need others like you to speak up for us! We do love our pets!

Vets are selfish assholes all they care about is the money they don't care about the animal. It's all about the money their so money hungry it makes me sick. An animal could be very sick and suffering and instead of helping it with a reasonable price they cost a fortune. The system is fucked we need less money and more compassion. That's why I chose not to be a vet because I couldn't charge a fortune for an animal to get well I would set a reasonable and fair price it wouldn't be all just about the money for me it would be about seeing the animal get well that would satisfy me. I'm all for making money but not at an animal's expense.
