  • Hawaiʻi Handweavers' Hui Classes at the Downtown Art Center in Honolulu feature weaving, fiber art and much more. Watch our students create chenille rugs with Linda Hee and Sidney Lynch. Come join in the fun at our fiber art studio. Learn with us!
Chenille rugs are woven twice, first with a weft of thrums and other leftover fibers to make chenille yarn, and then once again using the cut strips of handwoven chenille yarn as weft. Soft and fuzzy, chenille takes its name from the French word for the furry caterpillar it resembles, la chenille.

Great job on those rugs! How long does this take to make and I assume the class is what got people started then they need to reserve time at the studio to make them? If so they are easily removed and reattached to continue? Sorry I am curious about the process. MaHALO NUI LOA

Aloha Randy! Thanks for watching our video. We're so glad you enjoyed seeing the beautiful rugs made by our students. This class was held in our weaving studio located in the Downtown Art Center in Honolulu. It was 10 sessions long and met once a week for three hours each time over the course of 10 weeks. There were 7 students. 8 looms were allocated for use for the duration of the class. Students did not need to reserve studio time. Their projects remained on their looms for 10 weeks. Although, since this weaving is twice woven, the weavings were removed once, cut into strips of chenille yarn and then woven again..😃

I've not seen anything like that before. Is this a traditional Hawaiian technique or is it a traditional technique from elsewhere or is it a relatively new invention?

Hi, Thanks for watching our video. The chenille weaving technique is a longstanding, traditional form of weaving that originated in France. Aloha, Hawaiʻi Handweavers' Hui
