  • We left Bergen and took Norway's National Cycle Route 4, including the famous Rallarvegen bike route, toward Oslo. This section of riding was sparsely populated and the scenery was some of the most stunning of our whole tour through Europe. After completing the Rallarvegen, we switched over to the National Cycle Route 5 (Numedal Route) to reach Oslo and the end of our 14 month, 11,877 mile journey around Europe.
    Time frame: Late August to mid-September 2022

    I chuckled at your pronunciation of that little store - Snark Job. It's actually Snar (quick) Kjop (shop). The K and J blend together into a sound we don't use in English. I used to live in Stavanger and took the train from there to Oslo many many years ago. Great memories! Enjoy the rest of your journey!

    Instead of Upsete to Myrdal train station you should have cycled to Gudvangen, taken the ferry to Flåm and then cycled the Rallarvei from there.
    Much more scenic :D

    Just found this. Great stuff. Just wanted to mention that as ong as you find running water i n Norway, there really is no need to filter it. Naturally running water in Norway is even better than our tap water, which is already the best anywhere in the world. Thought it'd be nice to know if you ever decide to come back for some more bikepacking, or for anyone out there making plans to come here :-)

You mentioned not all tunnnels alow cyclists to pass through. My question is how many tunnels on route 4 / 5 from Bergen to Oslo are there that not allowing the cyclist? Also do you mind to share gpx file(s) from your tour for the section from Bergen to Oslo? Thank you for sharing your experiences.

    • @RollingExistence

      We got them from a bike shop, they're just the cardboard boxes that the bikes are shipped in. Luckily in Norway the first shop we went to had a couple lying around. Sometimes we have to visit a few different shops before we find boxes that are a good size for our bikes.

    The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

    Really love following you. Iolan to do a similar rour next July August. Do you have a GPX track any tips and how were the midges ??? How did you manage to stay so long in Europe under Schengen rules ???

    • @RollingExistence
      @RollingExistence  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a blog post with more details and GPX track here: www.rollingexistence.com/routes/bicycle-touring-southern-norway/
      We didn't have any issues with midges in late August/early September. The ticks were out in force though. We had to structure our trip around the Schengen Zone 90 day limit, so we stayed in the zone for 90 days then left the zone for 90 days in the Balkans, stayed in the zone 90 days then reset in Ireland and the UK, then rode up to Norway.

    Hi great video. How do you keep your electric equipment charged. And we’re the bike boxes easy to obtain.

    • @RollingExistence
      @RollingExistence  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We both carry several power banks, and we have dynamo hubs which help a bit. Sometimes grocery stores have outlets available, so we'll charge our stuff while we shop. We also used ferry/train station waiting rooms. We lucked out and found good bike boxes at the first shop we tried. Sometimes we have to go to a couple but it's never been a huge problem.

    No issues with assembly for me th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
