    I ❤ listening to this hosts perspective about old world history and how it went down bc it can get be very boring & confusing very quickly. I ❤ how he suddenly has a marker, or whatever, and then illustrates or draws as he explains the subject at hand. As he walks through all the historic places and describes when & what happened, I can imagine myself being back in the Dark Ages, too. I enjoyed watching every minute of this.

      @@winniefindstheway no, he wasn't modelled on King David in these sculptures since he was depicted doing Jesus things. When they depicted them as someone else it was as using a decoy, presumably to avoid persecution.

    Waldemar is a brilliant, knowledgeable and inspiring hoot. Art history is not my academic background, but I'd love to have taken a course or two from him back in the day.
    The art was indeed marvelous and beautiful, but the Dark Ages were an absolute intellectual desert. Not until the Renaissance did the human mind (at least in Europe) begin to free itself from the stultifying mental prison into which the catholic church had placed it, on pain of a horrible death.

      No? There's nothing like "he was taller than an average man, his hair short, with brown eyes and black hair, bulging veins showing on his lanky legs, a birthmark beneath his right eye" etc. That's the kind of thing that most people would say is a physical description of somebody--some kind of list of characteristics that you could use to identify a person in a crowded room.

    I enjoy your program, but I wish you would have explained a bit more about the Islamic architecture that isn't Arabic. Because everyone associates Islam with Arabs it's important to know that Arabs actually didn't have much of it because they were nomadic tribes. And as nomads they don't stay in one place to achieve it. It's very important to know that Arabs killed and destroyed everything on their quest to make everyone to become Moslem, in Iran old Persia everyone was forced to speak and write in Arabic otherwise they would be killed. Also your "campus " was made by Persian scientist and mathematician. I leave that to you to find his name. He's very famous. 👍

      And the Egyptian (Coptic) language was also obliterated by them being forced to learn Arabic. But they saw it happening, and they began to preserve and restore their language, at the last second, right before it was too late.
      And now, we Coptic Orthodox use it for liturgical church language. 😉

    The thing he glosses over is the long held conviction of the church to NOT create images of Christ. It wasn’t that no one could have comprehended what Jesus looked like but the prohibition of graven images. This is still a conviction on some Protestant churches today.

    When speaking of the Nilometer @ 2:30 in this documentary, you stated “The conquest of water was another of Islam’s great achievements in the dark ages.” You went on to say “What dramatic evidence it offers of the aquatic brilliance of Islam’s engineers.” You made it sound most impressive, going on to say how “celebrated” it was that the Nilometer was created by Muslim’s at Roda Island. However, it is well known and documented that “Across Egypt various nilometers could be found that recorded readings of the Nile's annual levels. A fragment of a recovered Egyptian stele "Royal Annals of the Old Kingdom" known as the "Palermo stone" deemed to be from the times of the First Dynasty around 3,000 B.C.E. The Palermo Stone reports systems of measurements utilizing units such as cubits, palms, and fingers.”
    Please correct this error and give credit to the culture that created and continued to alter that creation some 3,860 years before. Thank You

    • @shazwunder7967
      @shazwunder7967 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At no point did he say this was the first nilometer, he just said it was a brilliant piece of design. I think you may have missed the point of this documentary, its about art and design in the dark ages.

    The basilica was originally a military hall used for many purposes. One of which was as a court. Other uses were as meeting hall to discuss politics. So the roman building itself was not a christian creation, only an adaptation from other uses.

    • @walterulasinksi7031
      @walterulasinksi7031 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianschmidt9919 Depending upon location, the Basilica was used for many purposes. In large cities in the Roman Empire they could be an equivalent of a shopping mall, and being a large space, could serve as the hall justice, where decrees were announced, as a central meeting place for the military or for a political hall where rival factions could gain supporters. This is what happened in Rome itself. Long before the coming of Christianity. Humans have adapted a structure many times to suit their current needs. The Romans adapted the Greek theater designs into the Amphitheater of the Colosseum, later the basic concept was the basis for today’s stadiums.

    My Welsh mother’s maiden name was Culliford. She was born in Cardiff. Her Culliford ancestors were all from Dorset area. (See Wikipedia - Encombe House, Robert Culliford).
    Many Cullifords were politicians, lawyers and MPs.
    The Cullifords were around since at least 1485. Encombe House proporties were given to Robert by Henry VIII when he took Shaftsbury Abby lands away from the Abbess Elizabeth Zouche.

    Priests used human skin for bibles, and my dad is an archeologist, they have corpses decaying at different rates for science. Sky burials is what I’m thinking, many tribal Native American to Tibetan. Yet like the Neptune Society in Bay Area found a storage unit of ashes. It’s illegal to put human’s in ocean IDK what happened, it was early 2000. But did they have people sign without consent etc. Also the science community uses real skeletons in our science classes. And I don’t want to think of EdcGein whom made lamps from skin or pouches from female body parts. The interest in human bones is a business usually from China. I know Paxton Gate in SF sells human bones to skin bibles I asked “where do they come from?” She said new laws make it harder to get bones for taxidermy etc. And the chemicals they use to bleach them are now toxins. The owner couldn’t give me a straight answer. My dad,an archeologist, if found a skeleton, he called the police(he could tell how old it would be he is a scientist) but usually it’s a contaminated but theirs grave robbers. But many ask my dad for human bones, which he refuses. But they disgustingly people even outside US might use them for a morbid reason. Look at the catacombs in France people steal from it all the time, desecrate graves in Paris even famous poets to Jim Morrison. Morbid infatuation

    Those times are much better to hear about as long-ago history than it must have been to have live through them - although if we keep on the way we are headed thus far, it won't be long till we have re-created something just as bad if not worse!!

    I'm not a Christian, I have no dog in this fight, but Waldemar Januszczak's logic regarding the Turin shroud is ridiculous.
    He says that because early depictions of Christ are different from the shroud, the shroud must be fake, but then immediately goes on to say that early depictions of Christ are all based on artists choosing to use the Greek god Apollo as an artistic reference. Artists previously using one image to depict someone before finding (what is claimed to be) evidence the person looked different doesn't invalidate the supposed evidence. This man should stick to art critique; being a detective is outside of his wheelhouse.

      I was out at how Christians looked back and exaggerated the horrors of persecution. Same nonsense as beer-swilling architects whistling to work on their way to build pyramids. Large people groups, disposable, replaceable, subjugated with cruelties beyond our imagination, that’s how the large columns, buildings, shrines and monuments were built in the ancient world.

      I disagree. He’s literally just observing the art and what’s left behind of the time. If someone was observing our age in thousands of years they’d say “Christians of this time began building huge stadium-like buildings. They used the same type of music and lighting that sports stadiums employed” now, would that discuss all of Christianity? No, but it is still accurate and still a commentary on our time. God isn’t this little middle school boyfriend who is offended all the time. The sun isn’t offended when I say it’s too hot or too cool that day, it just shines. God is the same, we don’t need to step lightly around him or worry about hurting his feelings.

      @@Beach_flowerGalatians 6:7-8 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
      Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
      Psalm 2:4-12 ESV - He who sits in the heavens laughs;
      the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
      and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King
      on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree:
      The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
      today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
      and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron
      and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
      be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear,
      and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son,
      lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
      for his wrath is quickly kindled.
      Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
      Psalm 37:10-17 ESV - In just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
      though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land
      and delight themselves in abundant peace. The wicked plots against the righteous
      and gnashes his teeth at him, but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
      for he sees that his day is coming. The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows
      to bring down the poor and needy,
      to slay those whose way is upright; their sword shall enter their own heart,
      and their bows shall be broken. Better is the little that the righteous has
      than the abundance of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
      but the LORD upholds the righteous.
      Psalm 59:7-8 ESV - There they are, bellowing with their mouths
      with swords in their lips-
      for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?” But you, O LORD, laugh at them;
      you hold all the nations in derision.
      Exodus 34:14 ESV - (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),
      Nahum 1:2-3 ESV - The LORD is a jealous and avenging God;
      the LORD is avenging and wrathful;
      the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries
      and keeps wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power,
      and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty.
      His way is in whirlwind and storm,
      and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

      Its not always all about the Jews. The ancient American indigeneous peoples were also not a culture built on Judaism.
      Having different perspectives is what gives the world diversity.
      Its important to understand that what makes us all so unique is also what makes us all so similar.
