It's sad that Ed, Edd n Eddy was the last mainstream cartoon to use cels until it switched to digital for the rest of its run. Then again, digital traditional animation is very easy to do compared to cels these days.
I love cel animation. Nowadays, most animators forget that animation is art, yet the creators of anime still do every frame hand drawn. But it’s sad to see that anime is slowly becoming lower quality over time.
Ironically, digital animation is harder in the sense that cut corners and a lack of passion is more obvious. Animations like Akira used to be the biggest flex on what could be done in animation, but nowadays that level of complexity is bare standard (Akira is still God-tier, I am referring to things like the baklighting effects, fps and color palette range). Even if digital animation is more ecofriendly and efficient, effort isn't obsolete just yet.
As a traditional animator through & through, This made my day. Knowing that not only do people understand that some things you just can't re-create digitally, But actively think that there are still laces for it to be used in, It gives me hope.
(Sorry for my bad English) Amazing and underrated video! I really love animations and it was interesting for me to watch :) I learned a lot of new things from it!
I'm confused!!! I have an Xmen cel that says x-30 so I thought it was from episode 30. It has R2 on the bottom right and a bunch of other text. It was not used in any episode. Could this be from a rare cut scene. Is it more valuable?
Not really. In the days when Cel Animation was mainstream, they had there own type of paint, called Cel Paint. It's basically acrylic, just a lot thicker. Now, regular acrylic can be used as a substitute, but it requires multiple coats. Surprisingly, companies like Chromacolor still make Cel paint, but for rather abhorrent prices.
Digital counts too, animation stuff like eddsworld, South Park (except the pilot), and SpongeBob(season 2), not to mention family guy and all modern animation.
my school showed this to my class while in a lesson but thanks for the informative video!
Wow really, what school is this, I wish they taught this cool stuff at my school.

Has anyone ever told you you sound a little like Steve Buscemi?
3:15 movie film also switched to acetate (safety) film for the same reason.

Ed Edd n eddy is the last major cel show from 2004
It wasn't the last cartoon to use cels, but it was the last mainstream cartoon to use cels.
My digitally-done 2-D animations mimic the aesthetic of original hand-drawn animation.

@@IceCandyVirika oh sorry. Idk. Thx for tell me your gender😅😊
lost me with that voice
Also I noticed that in 2005 people stopped using cel animation
The irony is that now people want that cell shaded look back and are bashing the digital and the 3D.

Probably not usually cels are not rare they’re only rare if it’s an iconic drawing of an iconic scene.
Are you the same voice actor that does the videos for spirit science? You sound like him!
I thought the same thing...I actually was searching the comments to see if someone else noticed lmfao
Wonderful video. I learned so much!
I read somewhere that gouache paint was the preferred medium for painting cels. Is that true?

I don’t know, but it might be because gouache dries more opaque.
