    I’m actually disgusted by all the people saying that it’s Daria’s fault. She’s a literal child. As if she had a choice. All she could do was push herself until she broke. I really hope she gets better.

      Exactly, since she was the only female athlete representing Russia there was a lot of extra pressure. I doubt it mattered if she vocalized her pain beforehand, because there was no one to replace her.

      Daria is young and one of the most consistent of Team Tut, she doesn't do many super difficult elements because she has good artistry... if she's one of the skaters crumbling there is clearly a systemic problem with Tutberidze lol. If not with their training methods then sure as hell with their checks and balances system.
      As the Actual Adults coaches should be the ones guiding their young skaters, making sure they aren't chronically overtrained and ignoring the warning signs of injury. The person at 6:45 going "GiRLs ArE aLrEaDY aDuLTs" like no!!! that is a CHILD right there under immense pressure (both external and internal) who probably wanted to push herself because she needed to take advantage of the spotlight, who was also *encouraged* by her coaches to still compete.

      I have physical therapy training. My suspicion is that Daria might have an avulsion fracture of her lesser trochanter. It is relatively common in young athletes who compete in sports with a lot of torque created at the hip. I believe it is the tendon of the muscle that is overworked pulls off its attachment to the bone. No excuse for the extreme overtraining

      Even before quads and triple-triple combinations became "common" at the Junior level, nearly 1/2 of skaters at Junior (!!) Worlds (surveyed over 4 years) reported overuse injuries, with ladies singles clocking the highest for it. And that was Juniors... 20 years ago.

    i can say from experience that a 100% coaches can cause injuries with the way they coach. In my sports team when we had our old coach, in a group of about 30 girls we had 7 ANKLE INJURIES IN 6 MONTHS and a ton of other smaller more minor injuries (which i never saw anyone take any time off for). But now with a new coaching team this season its been 5 months and no injuries. Our old coach just pushed us way too hard and never seemed to care about our physical health just about results

She was most likely in pain prior the competition. And I can't believe people are blaming her. She is a CHILD! Tha adults around her SHOULD have seen that and did something for her to heal properly.

    Part of me wants to believe this is the beginning of Eteris downfall but I know the Russian federation LOVES her because she brings attention and money to the sport. It’s at the expense of these young girls, her coaching technique is dangerous. Quads need to be performed out of the muscle of a grown adult not the physics of an underweight prepubescent girl. Children with the weight of the world on their shoulders obviously aren’t going to know when to stop themselves, they need adult intervention that is in the child’s best interest.

      That's not realistic lmfao. Maybe 0.0001% of grown adult women can do quads. Even then they don't have the benefits of extra muscle and bone density like men to sustain those forces over repeated consistent competition. Young girls do quads marvelously. There's a reason why Eteri has had this success. Her skaters can do quads consistently because they are young girls and her technique works. If you remove that technique there will be virtually 0 quads ever in the ladies side and injuries will still happen anyway. So will eating disorders. It's not going to solve anything just stop these girls from pushing themselves to their limits. Ilia Malinin is about to push himself to land a quint, after his historic 4A success. Why shouldn't the girls get to push themselves while they're still capable of doing four rotations

    Talking about the point you made where the judges need to start punishing skaters for poor technique. In my personal opinion it will never happen. This will sound like a conspiracy theory but there is some kind of connection between eteri and the ISU. Whenever a skater leaves her coaching school their scores plummet despite having the same program or technical ability (example Evgengia, kostornaia, trusova). Even Brian Orser who decided to keep in Medvedeva's flutz stated "if they never called out the wrong edge before, why would they do it now.). And just as Orser predicted all of the sudden Medvedeva starts getting edge calls on her first season with him. meanwhile fresh juniors with lesser artistic ability from Eteri's camp started getting higher PCS than artistic skaters who have been in the senior stage for 4+ years. (Eg satoko, mao asada kostner).
    Unfortunately as it is, unless we get a complete overhaul of the ISU officials, we likely will never see any changes to how skaters are judged.

    Edit: One channel on TH-cam said that, there isn't much information in general. But a broken hip for a 15 year old is kinda a big deal. Even knee problems, stress fractures. The issue behind that goes way deeper than just one bad fall.

When yuzuru got injured before the Olympics did Bryan just say “you’re done” and replace him with another student? They worked together through the injury and found a way to compete and I’m sure even if yuzuru wasn’t able to compete, Bryan wouldn’t see him as a broken winged bird that is now useless. As a figure skating coach, when an athlete injures themselves, the best thing to do is to remain calm and not amp up the situation. Staying calm helps the athlete calm down and gives them reassurance that their team is there for support.
      Also, it helps everyone that is on the ice to stay calm and try to refocus on what they are doing. Again, dramatizing an on ice injury does not help anyone, especially in a competition where everyone is all ready at a heightened state of arousement. Best thing to do is to stay calm.

    Skaters get injured all the time, but it rarely triggers as loud a conversation as this. I’ve been trying to think through why. I think what made this particular instance such a conversation is how public and in the moment it was. For better or worse, Daria’s expression was so clear on camera. The way she gripped her hip after the fall and started instantly crying. These girls are so poised and elegant on ice that it can be easy to forget how young they are, but in that moment, her face was the same as that of a small child who is scared and crying for their parent. You suddenly start to wonder if all the other injuries you hear about are also like this, but just off camera. This moment made us all see “injury” not as an abstract thing but how devastating it is in reality. And then comes the disgusting thought that you, the viewer, are in fact contributing to the celebrating of a sport that does this to children. It feels gross and of course we must talk about it-either to defend it (and therefore defend our own complicity) or speak against it (to try and alleviate our guilt).

      A hip fracture at her age is extremely serious. This is what we call a pathological fracture - the only time you normally see hip fractures esp trochanteric ones outside of major trauma are in the elderly. It strongly suggests that Daria (and likely others in team Tutberidze, esp Scherbakova) are suffering from malnutrition, anorexia/bulimia and osteopenia from overtraining. There is no way a 15 year old should be sustaining a hip fracture. A stress fracture in the foot, toe or tibia? Potentially. But the hip? Daria should be out until at least next year and I would be very surprised if she ever returns to high level skating.

When the own coaches start dissing you all over media saying "she is lazy, doesn't train enough", the girls are being bullied into mad training. But then they get injured, and the "adults" just say "well, she need to say when she feels bad, we don't read minds". It's always a catch-22 with them, and the girls are the ones getting the blame.

    • @toxic-low-key-ghost7934
      @toxic-low-key-ghost7934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think so because it’s 15 right now so young girls with undeveloped bodies are pushing so so so so hard to get there since they know it’s now or never and they can’t last long the way they are doing things. Good jumping technique and skating skills take years to master so they take the easy way out and cheat jumps to go to the Olympics by 15,16,17 and don’t actually build sustainable jumps. However raise the age to 18 or even 19 ( in pairs the senior age is 19 for girls and 21 for boys ) and you won’t see children crushing their bodies and working to the extreme because they know they have to last until they are old enough. And by that time they have gone through puberty and if they have been taught crap jumping technique then it will have failed. This encourages technique that is based on longevity and healthy mature bodies instead of fragile children built to last a year or 2. Like in pairs for example ( I know pairs and singles are different ) senior men have to be 21 and this encourages them to build PURE body strength and coordination to be able to lift the female partner and perform all the elements involving the female. If the age was 16 or 15 you’d have young boys not yet fully developed trying to do crazy stunts and lifts which just leaves them injured because they haven’t developed the strength of a man yet. Hope that makes sense

    I think Kosto’s plan is actually working. I really don’t mind that her 3A is a hit or miss right now. She just needs to land it at the most crucial times (RusNats and Olympics, if she gets to the Olys). She reminded me of an interview Shoma and Yuzu did together where Yuzu told Shoma to play video games less and to practice more. Although I love Yuzu and greatly appreciate the effort he puts in to push the sport, maybe the real secret to success and staying injury free in a brutal sport is doing quality training in moderation. These talented skaters don’t need to burn themselves out day in day out. Sufficient Rest should be part of the training. But I guess that is impossible at team tutberidze when there is literally an abundance of skaters who want to be at the top in a country that wants to validate themselves as a figure skating stronghold after all the scandal russian skaters and the russian federation have gone through since even earlier than Salt Lake 2002.

      I wonder if there's been much research into a scientific approach to determining when you're doing the right amount of training. That is, you're doing the amount of training that maximises your skill and ability in your sport. There is an attitude amongst some people you are only capable of extreme performance if your body is capable of absorbing huge amounts of training. That fits in with the notion that pain is the ultimate measure of whether you're doing enough training. I'm not at all sure about this way of measuring training levels.

    Coming from the orthopedic profession, you usually see hip fractures in elderly adults due to osteopenia and osteoporosis. Their bones are very frail. You shouldn't see this in youth unless their body is using bone nutrition to supply the blood stream with nourishment. The only other scenario that could be in someone of this age fracturing a hip, would be Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis. Kids who have had pain for a long time, especially if they are child athletes, I would suspect of having this. Perhaps Daria already had SCFE and then further injured it.

    • @sallypenhalli
      @sallypenhalli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's interesting that you say the bones can be weakened by the body seeking nutrition from the bones in lieu of actual nutrition. Generally women can't do quad jumps unless they are very light weight and almost prepubescent. They have to remain thin and light to stay in the air long enough for 4 rotations Some of the young athletes who train with this woman have spoken before about how they are weighed several times a day, live on protein powders and are not allowed to drink water on competition days. They also speak about how much practise they do. Cmpared to working with other trainers this trainer expects them to keep repeating their routine until they do a clean run. It makes sense that what you describe would happen when they lack the nutrition to do the amount of physical training expected of them.
      This is child abuse on so many levels.

    Couldn’t agree more with everything you said! I understand why people are saying to not blame tutberidze, but I blame everyone. I hate when people say tutberidze is advancing the sport because if the sport is evolving into something you have to stop doing before you reach 18 because it’s taken such a toll on your body, then the sport needs to devolve its literal child abuse

    I was previously arguing that we shouldn't necessarily blame Team Tutberidze because so many other people have been injured. Now that you've fully explained your opinion on Daria's injury (and I lurked on FS reddit and read some things + remembered that their camp has a history of injures haha), I think I'm coming round to your point of view, though I think the issue is still quite nuanced. I don't think Eteri is evil or doesn't care about the well-being of her students (though she gets super petty and frankly abusive when they leave, so I'm not saying she's an amazing person). If she didn't care at all, she wouldn't have wanted Anna to pull out of Russian Nationals or held Trusova back from doing as many quads as she wanted. I do genuinely think that she wants the best for the students in her camp (talking only about Eteri, not Dani G) and is targeted about the ways she pushes them. It's just that she and her team has seen that repetition gets results, so that's what she's going to push her students to do.
    The issue is deeper than just "Eteri = evil" and, like you said, goes even to the way the sport is judged. I just don't think it's helpful to include speculation about Eteri being cold to Daria etc among the many other good points you made. I also think that dramatic language like saying the team broke Daria isn't really great. That said, after watching your video, I feel like my initial take, that we shouldn't immediately blame Team Tutberidze, might have been too out of context and not well-thought-out (though yup, it's more than just them). Thanks for the video!

  • @cmw9876
    @cmw9876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This video covers an issue that has bothered me for some time. It's possible for young skaters to jump quads - jumps where young skaters do 4 rotations. They're pretty amazing from the view of great spectacle but in my observation, the jumps do not have great aesthetic appeal. Emphasis is on maximum performance. There may be a very few very talented skaters who can land quads safely consistently. I haven't seen them. Quads are encouraged by judges (or maybe the ISU) in that if it's not a good jump, you may get points for a triple jump. So, if you're doing a jump which has a good chance of going wrong, you may land badly or fall. A bone may not break but a crack may develop and get worse with subsequent training - a skater may end up with a broken hip, an unusual injury in a young person.
    Adult skaters in their twenties have bodies with more developed skeletal structures. Footballers typically in many different codes sustain contacts and tackles which would smash younger bodies. For an extra few points, a younger skater may end up with an injury that has life-long consequences. An athlete in the Long Jump finishes in nice soft sand. A Pole Vault is great to watch but really a pretty weird sport form . . . but they usually have nice soft landings. When 15 year old Russian girls jump quads and mess up, the ice is very hard. I wonder if a time will come when such jumps are barred. Alternately, there may be training levels to attain before attempting them is allowed. And, if quads are jumped, skaters ought to show a safe level of consistency in the landings. There was a time when a triple was a big deal. We got smart. Let's do that with quads or lets not do them.

    Welcome to my angry TED talk:
    The first eteri girl to break in front of us (even if at the time she was with another coach) was Yulia, seeing Daria slowly skating in pain towards her coach its the same image as Yulias last Free program. Of course its not the same to fracture your hip, but bc of Eteri and the weight and water thing, Yulia had anorexia and thats why she retired after that, I just see an enormous similarity. I dont think Daria is going to retire, what im saying its that Eteri is back to her basics. Back then she had less than 4 girls, and Yulia left. Now she has like a fucking army and she cant keep an eye on everyone.
    I need her empire to crumble down, i just dont think she is doing any good to anyone rn, everyone just go and get a new coach bc this woman isnt intrested in coaching but on having an army, a brand and money. Tired of this shit...poor Daria is FIFTEEN... F I F T E E N, I NEEEED TO PUNCH A WALL.
    I totally agree with the scores thing, and when i complain about Trusova only jumping people tell me im only intrested in artistry AND I FUCKING AM, COME AT ME.
    I am just angry, this already crossed a line.I would love to think Kosto has a plan, but its not even funny, its their whole life and bodies, I AM SO ANGRY...how do we even intervene in this????, bc evidently no one is going to, then we as fans should do something, i dont know... sign a petiton idk AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA im so frustrated its unbelievable

    Ban the quads. Only one triple axel per program allowed. It’s ridiculous to keep expecting more and more and more. Judge the skating in the quality of the other jumps and the artistry. Sakamoto is a prime example of what beautiful skating is without needing overly dangerous jumps which aren’t done properly anyway.

  • @killbethy

    Not to be fatalistic (okay, a bit, but it's honest), but if her hip is indeed fractured, this is most likely a career ending injury. Recovering from something like a broken leg would be easier and most likely less detrimental to her career. Even if everything goes well surgically, if she can get back on the ice just to stroke within 6 months, I'd be surprised. One of the reasons hip replacement is so common is that the surgery tends to be less risky that just repairing the hip, and she's still about 35 years too young for that. Even once it is healed, I doubt she will ever jump again, especially not at the level Tutberidze requires. It will most likely reduce the mobility of her hip enough that even spins, spirals, and footwork (potentially even just good skating form) could be challenging as well. There's no way Eteri will take her seriously if she has to circumvent such a difficult injury and would only be eligible for the next Olympics past the infamous Eteri expiration date to boot.
    Poor girl. Kids this young should not be beating their bodies half to death like this (even 20 years ago, a study was done over four years and almost HALF of skaters competing at Junior (!!) worlds, in the days before quads and triple-triples were commonplace, reported overuse injuries that caused them pain on a regular basis with ladies singles being the highest). If overuse wasn't a problem, it's pretty damn unlikely she would have been injured so badly from this fall, and somehow I doubt Eteri is going to be forking over the cash for the medical bills when something like this should fall on the shoulders of the coach and Federation for not just promoting it, but demanding it, and not creating an environment that teaches athletes to listen to their bodies.

    It angers me immensely that these coaches do this to these girls knowing all too well the consequences. At 14 I developed an ED during a competitive cheerleading and destroyed my body in less than a year. I was considered one of the strongest tumblers on my team and it was my dream to compete. It took mere months for my body to start breaking down and I was left with multiple injuries that refused to heal. I had to quit the same year I had started. I never went back and I have not done anything athletic ever since. My body just can’t handle it and I am only 19. I have the back, knees and hips of someone 3-4x my age. my bones are not the only thing that have suffered. I have had extreme stomach/digestion issues since recovery due to the restriction I put myself through. I didn’t get my period until the age of 17 and its extremely irregular. I could go on forever about all the health issues I’ve racked up due to the hell I put my body through. The fact that these girls are guided to do this to themselves disgusts me. I live with the consequences of my actions everyday. It is hard to find a job due to the sheer pain of standing for long periods. I can’t even enjoy walking around the mall for a day without coming home in severe pain. My body will never recover fully from what I did. Neither will there’s.

    Honestly it’s pretty normal to go 100% during practice as it conditions the body, so even if you compete with only 80% it would not strain the body. The problem however is the INTENSITY of the Russian girls’ training. It’s very hard to get injured when you’re a kid unless it’s a freak accident, poor foundations, or stretching your body to the limit until your body breaks down. 15 or even 18 is still too young to have those heavy injuries, as their bodies are growing

      A hip fracture, a trochanteric fracture and a rupture of the femur’s tendon are the same, cause in this case, the tendon that goes from the hip (trochanteric bone) to the femur broke in the point where the muscle touches the bone, and the snapping of the tendon was accompanied by a bit of hip bone been torn apart from the hip.

    Eteri's techniques are unsustainable: this is no secret. The only thing is people choose to overlook them because of stellar results. I cannot stress enough how much cleaner the sport will be if the judges just STOP the favouritism and distance themselves from Eteri...I mean could you imagine equal judging for all, skaters actually getting q calls and URs? Seeing the very lax reaction from team tut even when daria was CRYING after the fall just made me so mad
    Another thing is...as much as I love the Team tut girls, I am hoping that one day Team Tut doesn't win and loses to someone with ACTUALLY correct technique, JUST SO she wakes up finally and sets it right...until then it is one girl sacrificed after another. Someone correctly said they're being treated as a dime a dozen.

    @lazylazier479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Atheletes get injured, yes. It happens and every sport usually has its "typical" injuries -I'd say for figure skating its ankle and back injuries, typically... a fractured hip on a fifteen year old is not Typical and we cant even say its a freak accident because her fall wasn't even that bad in of itself. This is clearly, like you said, repeated stress on the bones for a prolonged time finally taking its toll ON A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL. Like i get it sometimes there will be really bad injuries in sport but I cant bring mysekf to think this is just random when Eteri girls suffer similar injuries following a same timeline (ankles, foot, back and then something usually way major) Add in the fact that we KNOW these girls are put on heavy diet restrictions and do very hard workouts and its a recipe for disaster and it keeps happening because people in charge dont care.
    I feel like the people who can do something about it (ISU, Russian Fed, literally anyone) are turning a bling eye because guads are "good for the sport". Its become a spectacle, lets see how many impossible jumps these young girls can do! Oh? They have serious injuries from training those jumps? Sucks I guess... like please at this point i would be happy if they at the very least PRETEND like they care about these girls because we know they really dont. Yulia, Evgenia, Alina, the current batch of incredibly talented skaters, all suffering from one thing or another and i dont understand how people just allow the history repeat itself. Not only repeat itself but actually get worse by each incarnation...
    And then ppl were blaming her? Saying she should have known better, should have said something? Shes a fifteen year old who grew up in an enviroment where strict trainings are normalised, where multiple skaters train while still injured -OFCOURSE she didnt say anything (or maybe she did and was shot down, we dont know) because thats why they have coaches,to stop them from injuring themselves but at Eteri we know its different. And yes, I will be blaming the coaches, I dont care
    Kostornia has an iron spine and i adore her for it, i said before that team eteri would regret trying to make an example of her and i feel like its going to happen soon.
    I was blown away from the korean ladies at nhk! Eunsoo Lim in her black costume was breathtaking.
    For some reason Im not AS worried for Yuzu and Rika as i am for the others? Like theyre pulling out from competitions which clearly shows that theyre serious about healing from their injuries.

      Knee injuries are also common as most skaters use their knees to not only to jump but also to land, so their knees absorb the impact instead of their backs.

    it should be considered child-abuse , o my this is atrocious! Is the money or fame more important than your child's well-being? I want to ask this to that woman coach and also the girls parents!

    I replayed so many times the scene where Daria fell. I believe her hips, thigh and legs looked so awkward, thus it made her fell down and broke her hips.

      no. You could see her pained expression mid air and she clearly bailed out of a planned triple jump. She broke it at take off, which means she likely already had a hairline fracture

    about the dresses: I'm saying this since the very beginning of the season
    Asian girls' dresses are absolutely beautiful, they're different styles of course, but none of these are ugly (in my opinion, feel free to disagree)
    Russia needs to stop paying for dresses that look made with pieces of fabric that are left over

    In ballet is the same hips, knees, feet back but what’s going on in figure skating is way to much. Injuries are “normal” but not to this extent… this looks like abuse.
    And yep this is long term; I have bad knees from ballet and it wasn’t even professional ballet… of course technique is imperative but figure skating right now is way to demanding…these are children…

    Paola, I have to say that i looove your channel, I wait every Wednesday for a new one haha, and I want to my open my own youtube channel about rhytmic gymnastics, which is my second favorite sport, and I wanted to ask you about the apps you use to edit your videos or how you record your voice for your videos, I’d really appreciate it if you could tell me :)). Keep up the good work Pao. Cheers from México 🇲🇽

      gracias carolina!! Honestamente my editing skills are not that anything great. I use da vinci resolve mostly bc it's free lol. But all i do is cut trim and ad visuals which any editing software should be able to do. A normal 20-25min video takes me about 5-6 hours pf editing mostly because i have to compile all the visuals. So mostly just screen recorders, an editing software, and i record with my video camera but just leave the audio.

    A hip fracture at her age?? It is extremely serious. This is what we call a pathological fracture -a break where the bone broken and/or the mechanism of injury wouldn't occur with normal bone health and normal physics. The only time you normally see hip fractures esp trochanteric ones outside of major trauma are in the elderly. Daria should be out until at least next year and I would be very surprised if she ever returns to high level skating. d. T

    Well...as I said in the previous video, seeing daria by herself with no affectionate comments from her trainers broke my heart. And yes, I see how every single one of eteri's army is falling to pieces peerooo which pisses me off more!!!! (Okey eteri's team makes great athletes but, with such a good team and so much money...why the fuck don't they do more medical checkups to their athletes?why do they just wait for these poor girls to start suffering? I am really sad and the season had started very well...now I fear for the olympics to which we have to add the return of the covid pandemic that (hopefully not) could end up cancelling the event (something I could not overcome again). These are bad times for figure skating.

    Children can have unstable ligaments/joints while they're growing, so they're more likely to get injured, especially when over-training.
    Hip joints (and knees) are particularly vulnerable in skaters, as we're landing on the same leg, over and over. Triples jumps (and above) take a huge toll on your body. Triples/quads come with bad falls. I used to always land on my hip or tailbone. Learning triple toe, I had a permanent bruise/lump the size of my fist on my left hip, as I'm a lefty.
    If she had a fractured hip she shouldn't have being skating, never mind competing with that!!! These kids are being pushed too hard. Skating through an injury like that is a HUGE no-no!

    I remember hearing in one of your videos that Aliona Kostornaia didn't act like she wanted to go to the Olympics because she kept fighting her coaches. I guess we now know why. Maybe she's actually training less than the other girls to protect herself from very serious injuries like the one poor Daria just suffered. Aliona so far seems to be escaping the 18-year-old deadline that affected everyone before her.
    And can someone please give Kaori a song that matches her energy?????? She's skating to a very sad song while giving out really happy vibes, I hate it.

    I hope you are doing a video to the Competition in France alone the fact that two tutberidze girls couldn’t land an ultra C element is a video worth and the suggestion of the commentator that Aliona might be injured just after Darias hip fracture. Also the american women stoped midway in her SP just so manny things you could make a video about. I’m really hoping you are doing that so yeah

    Yes all- We need to be so careful - it’s not always about pushing through and skating w/an injury! But that seems like that’s the expectation. As an adult skater we can make that call, but I really worry about our young skaters! I have a new hip and am an adult skater. I’ll never jump again, but I can skate. 🥰

    I am devastated by Daria's retirement. This is INSANITY. She is a friggin child! When she placed over Haein Lee years back in JGPF, I was bitter and felt Haein was more artistic, but now I just wish Daria is still in the sport. It's just so infuriating. At the end of the day, these are just little girls.

    I am just wondering why did Kostornaia has bad knees...
    Hip injury... sadly is for life :(
    Hopefully Daria's injury is not so bad and can heal without going through surgery within 6 months of bed rest, probably with a hip cast or some sort of :( My mother went through a hip fracture, she got 4 fractures on that injury and spent 6 months laying on bed :( it was so sad and traumatic.
