Matt Certainly loved Kitty, but his job prevented him from committing completely, perhaps out of fears of leaving her a widow should he meet his match in a gunfight, or some outlaws using her to get to him. In one of the early episodes he did decide to take off the badge for Kitty, but when Hell breaks loose in Dodge, he is forced to put it back on.
I'm sorry you didn't like the paring with the song, but I thought it work well for them, but not everyone has the same opinion as me, and that's fine. If you don't like it you don't have to watch it.
