The Great Dechurching hitting cities across America | NewsNation Prime

  • Throughout the nation, one can spot aging, abandoned churches falling into despair, with some even bearing graffiti inside. However, on any given day, you could pass by an unassuming building like Soul City Church in Chicago without realizing that hundreds of Gen Z'ers gather there to worship.

I am right in this category and know lots of others, stopped attending at almost exactly age 30…big part most American churches push politics too much for people that are that in between age to get behind so churches are filled with youth that don’t enough care yet and old people that are more worried about getting their lives right with God before they die than people so they don’t care what stray beliefs are pushed on them (sorry harsh but true), by the time you’re in your 30s and 40s you don’t want someone telling you how to vote just so you can go to their church, it’s not that you’ve lost your faith in God, I consider myself a stronger person and Christian today than when I attended church in my teens and 20s, because I’ve learned how to believe without the guidance of an in person church every step of the way.

It’s because we’re coming into the age of authenticity and religion does not allow for individuality and freedom of self expression. Spirituality, however, does. Young people don’t want to be told that god requires them to be something or someone that doesn’t feel authentic to them. They don’t want to be controlled or manipulated, and they are educated on how to spot manipulation tactics and cult-like behaviors. Many are denying any form of god altogether, while others are turning within and finding an expansive, all encompassing “god.”

After almost 50 years (I’m now almost 66) as a practicing Catholic I walked completely away from it. Our last two priests were charged with sexual abuse and removed from their church. Then I began doing some serious Bible reading and research and realized the Catholics CREATED many of the rituals and strange practices they have. It angered me they didn’t welcome EVERYONE to their church without ‘joining’ and paying ‘dues’ every week! Then there was the CSA (Catholic service appeal) what a joke! I will never call myself a Catholic again but I am a Child of God.

One of my two companies is involved in tearing down old structures. I recover valuable beams, doors, design elements, flooring and more. I used to try to recover things like stained glass and allow some local recover cherished mementos. The problems caused by this became onerous.
I now remove obviously valuable windows, etc. Then sell them to companies that use them as design elements in housing. Who is responsible for this? The people that would not respect that this building was gone and take what memories they could recover.

As someone who had gone to the same church since I was 3 years old until I stopped going at 25 years old. For me it was my church's values. They kept focusing on the next generation. Forgetting completely about the generation that started that church (my grandparents are charter members and help start the church). The church grew and grew and grew. And became more focused on worship than the bible. And we moved from the Sanctuary to a gym. I'm sorry I don't like going to church in a gym. I want to be in the sanctuary with an organ. I am very traditional when it comes to church and miss the way the church was. Where it was a mixed bag and they had activities for everybody (singles, married couples, children, families, etc.). Now it's just focused on kids and I don't get anything out of it anymore. But that's just me.

Read your Bible in order to know what God has revealed and what we are to believe .. The Gospel .. I Cor 15: 1-4. When you read, ask the Holy Spirit to open your understanding. If you believe Christ died for the sins of all, was buried and the third day rose from the dead, then you are saved by grace through faith in His blood. Read the Acts which tells what happened after His crucifixion. Pay attention to who is speaking and to whom so to learn to rightly divide the word and understand the transition from Jew only to Gentile as well, and that, in Christ, there is no difference. Understand Jesus, in His earthly ministry, went to Jew only with very few exceptions. The true church is The Body of Christ and consists of we who believe The Gospel. Jesus did it all ❤💯

I’m Christian, but I stopped trusting churches after trying more than one. I prefer reading Scripture and praying on my own.
At church, certain individuals are predatory and emotionally abusive and leadership enables it and covers it up. People gaslight you to stay in the abuse and shame you if you walk away. It feels like a cult.
Also, church leadership sees unmarried women as problems to be solved rather than crucial players in God’s ongoing work in the world. The implicit message is that single Christian women should downplay or ignore legitimate marital concerns, such as compatibility and the desire for physical and psychological safety. Christian women are pressured to pair up even with unsuitable men, which only increases the risk of divorce. These pressures reduce women’s value to their bodies and their bodies to a religious utility.
Church leadership is right to keep honoring marriage and family, but it is not correct to value marriage and family strictly as ways to maintain a purity culture and expand the faith.

Church is not meant to be just for the young, it's for everyone. Its not about the worship, its about Jesus. Until everyone, every generation is welcome at church, then it will continue to decline. One generation left without help, hope, or being reached out to, or fellowship, it will affect all generations. Jesus said come to me, he didn't say, for people to take his place and for them to say come to me, in place of Jesus. Its wrong of the church, or those that call themselves the church, to cut the young off from their family, and cause a seperation from their parents and take the parents places. God is not just for the young, he is for family, because he created family. Why would anyone want to go to a group of people that refuse to communicate with others on line, refuse to fellowship and treat people less than, and give people the silent treatment? Make them feel, like they can't interact. Just have to watch everyone else, its miserable, and its not on.

The Bible foretold a drying up of support for Christendom, along with other religions, in our day. (Revelation 16:12; 17:15)
But it also foresaw that some would abandon false religion not merely because of dissatisfaction or disillusionment but because of a positive purpose.
The Bible prophetically urges: “Get out of her, my people, if you do not want to share with her in her sins.” (Revelation 18:4) The “her” referred to is the symbolic religious whore, “Babylon the Great,” which embraces all the religions of the world, including those of modern Christendom.
The “my people” are sincere seekers of truth who leave Babylon the Great because they want to serve God in the way Jesus taught. Christendom has strayed so far from true Christianity that sincere people must get out in order to serve God acceptably.

I could have gone to a service like that at least once a month. The spiritual experience has given way to pastors (not all, but many) who are now overly political, and they wonder why their flock have left.

As an atheist, I'm coming at this from the opposite direction: The "Great Dechurching" is nothing for us atheists to celebrate. These folks are becoming atheists and agnostics by default. As long as you do the right thing that’s all that really matters in life. Technically not going to church isn’t a sin and some people who go to church just because there parents make them so where’s the value

3 kids forced to go to church. As an adult none of us attend church. Don’t force kids to go to church. It was a chore.

That last statement could be the biggest defect of our society, the fear of letting go and entrusting the new to flourish. It can’t be just the young fighting to be heard, it’s also has to be the old learning to listen. We’ve had it backwards too many times, and look where we are.

If you’re going to give up half your Sunday, Church needs to be entertaining and not so darn dull.
A church full of old people who come off “holier than thou”…who wants to go there.
Make it fun, make it modern, make it in a reasonable time frame.

    It's predicted in The Bible.
These are the end days and everything predicted is coming true.
Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior now and reject all of this evil, reject the state, Christians will be persecuted but Jesus will reward you with everlasting life.

Yawn. Every year since 33 AD we’ve heard the same BS. Take your pick: 1) Jesus is returning during the lifetime of some of his disciples. 2) It’s the end times. 3) Repent and be saved by Jesus, and be one of “the chosen” who will survive the Tribulation. I could go on, but after close to 2000 years, who in there right mind would still fall for this BS. Religious, ALL religions are toxic. People killing people and destroying this beautiful planet, and for what, their religious differences. F-ck ‘em all.

Those commenting negatively here about migrants and homeless, are completely clueless as to the message that Jesus was teaching. Really, really sad and disheartening.
