Chris Potter is amazing but this man right here... He is my favorite tenor saxophonist.. Wow, what a beast! Thanks for posting this, no other posting on line like this of Joel Frahm
3:27 - Jobim's 'Fascinating Rhythm', followed @ 3:28 by a quasi-Quote of 'Confirmation''s Second A ii/V/I phrase. 3:32-33= Tad Dameron's 'Hot House' 3:51-54 = 'Straight No Chaser' -ish motiv-based sequence. 4:57-59 - forget that one's name. 5:30-33 -Indiana Jones theme. 5:36-42 - Bridge to Oliver Nelson's 'Hoe Down'. #3 seems to have a lot more disguised/shifted/fused w/ other motifs/patterns. 8:11-13 - sequence w/ 'Salt Peanuts' rhythmic figure, followed @ 8:13-15 variation on Oliver Nelson Pattern # 18. 8:28-32 - sequence based on Bernstein's 'America' from West Side Story..
Joel Frahm has been understudying and chasing the 'Trane - the J-'Trane - with unapologetic pugnacity. Each time Joel effects a Michael Brecker quote - or a Monk's or any other's - during his stellar improvisation, I chance a smile of unrestrained appreciation. Joel seems to have attended the same school - and to have been instructed by the same teacher - as Chris Potter, a John Coltrane alumnus - so to say. I cannot get enough of Joel's!
When you are well versed on jazz you will understand all he is playing. A great encyclopaedia of the past well Put together and nice to listen. Respect ✊
I just saw him Friday night, he's a super nice guy. On a side note you should feature more Canadian players on here, there are so many amazing players here but people don't know them because they're Canadian. There are of course exceptions to this rule but I feel the internet could benefit from hearing some of these players.
Y'all should do one of these for George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Melissa Aldana, Renee Rosnes, Joe Henderson, Ari Hoenig, Vincent Herring, Bobby Watson, Kenny Garrett.
These Jazzicians are each so great that saxophone playing appears to be A-B-C - which it is not, especially when it is a question of "Organic Real Jazz". I adore them all
WHO SHOULD BE NEXT!?
McBride!!!!
Joshua Redman
Eli Degibri
bernie’s bootlegs PLEASE, we need one of these on DICK OATTS
How about my main man Vincent Herring? 😏🙏
