      AMD wants 5800x3d users, much more than 7700x users, to buy 9700x at least, is easy to understand, AMD is literally saying, if u have a 7800x3d wait for 9800x3d, u are not the general consumers which change CPUs between at least 2 generations.

      Nope they compare against the 5800X3D (2 generations old) because the previous generation 7800X3D is faster for gaming then the 9000-series. • @Dhruv-qw7jf
      @Dhruv-qw7jf หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      You could also say that the 4090 is what was actually supposed to be the 4080, since 4090 isn't actually providing good price-to-performance compared to the original 3080, but everyone cuts it slack just because "the 90 tier is not supposed to be good price-to-performance, it's supposed to be an extreme Titan class card" but it gave a big boost over the 3090, but the 3090 itself was kind of a rip-off and the 3080 was clearly a much more sensible option if we consider MSRP pricing. So I think the 4090 was originally supposed to be 4080 but it would've been outrageous if they charged 1600 for the successor to 3080 which was 700 (still charged an outrageous 1200 for the actual 4080 though, but it wasn't received well and it would've been even more so if it was 1600 even if the performance was upgraded to 4090 levels).

    The slide given to us by AMD regarding the 5800x3d and 9700x states that the 5800x3d is running at 105W, while the 9700x is running at 65W. • @keldon1137
      @keldon1137 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      TDP =/= power draw. TDP is basically how much cooler in theory u need, its even in the name. Graphs show TDP, high TDP parts can have way lower draw when not utilizing all cores, can have higher draw than tdp with autoboosting etc. For example 7800x3d is rated for 120w tdp afaik, peak draw reaches 160-170w. TDP values are lower this gen because AMD (at least with info they provided) improved thermal efficiency of design/ihs, so its easier to cool (often ryzen cpus can reach high temps despite low draw this gen because of thick ihs). Dosent mean this gen will draw less, its just easier to cool. They even mentioned that this gen is supposed to run 7c cooler than previous one, that would impact TDP values HEAVILY.

    Watt is correct for TDP as well as power usage. It is both physical power.
    Compare it to the different power an engine makes at the crankshaft, vs. the power that gets applied to the road by the car with that engine. The crankshaft power is always higher.
    The power usage of a CPU will always be higher than their thermal power output, the thermals are just the "exhaust" power it took above the pure work of shifting certain zeroes to certain ones.

    My guess is that for the 9700x benchmark results (at least on those that claim a 2% advantage over the 7800x3d) PBO was enabled for the CPUs, since they can justify the performance uplift by saying "look, this CPU is running very low on power consumption out of the box, so just press this button and it will get a significant performance boost without losing much on efficiency". I don't think that would be necessarily bad since 65w out of the box is actually nuts for an 8 core CPU keeping in mind how powerful it will (probably) be, but AMD should start being more clear on their benchmark results.

    • @keldon1137

      TDP isnt the draw, they literally said their improved chip design/ihs to make CPUs run 7c cooler. That would result in lower TDP number, because as its name suggest, its thermal design power. It dosent equal draw, for example 7800x3d is 120w TDP rated while drawing up to 160-170w at peak load.
      Its entirely possible that new gen will draw more or same as previous one.

    How did I see this the moment it was released? Thanks for the news. AMD marketing stays bad, unsurprisingly. The other possibility is that AMD's test setup isn't the same (faster or slower RAM, etc.) or the microcode/drivers aren't as mature as those for the 5800/7800 X3D chips. AMD could be comparing these without PBO, for instance, whereas a lot of reviewers run things with automatic PBO on since that's the standard setting on a lot of motherboards now (I think, anyway, mine came with it turned on by default). They may be running PBO on one set of chips but not on the other. Their marketing isn't exactly the most honest.

    So, while technically the 'new' AMD cards would be a new release in the sense that we couldn't buy them before; the 7990XTX at least was already a 'released' card back in 2022 roughly maybe 2023. Paper release essentially. Never got put out in the wild. But you can find tech specs for what was supposed to be released on techpowerup and technicalcity. Actually, technicalcity has all the 'new' gpu's listed on their site. Not sure for techpowerup in regards to the 7950 models, but they do have the 7990XTX like I mentioned earlier.
    I suspect what likely happened is AMD did some binning, and released a certain batch as their workstation W7900 series, saving the best gaming bins for later. They probably were going to release the 7990XTX at one point, but then decided to wait it out and see what Nvidia ultimately pulls out of their oven. Now that Nvidia's specs are better known at this point, AMD is ready to let the 7990XTX out of the cage to compete.
    And if the specs on those previous mentioned websites are anything close to accurate; it will compete quite nicely. Nvidia will still probably take the leading edge, like usual; but it's going to be a close one. Techpowerup quotes a boost clock of 3599Mhz. Base of 2500. Game of 3300. Shader same.
    5090 is being hyped at roughly 2900Mhz for its base clock. Impressive of course, and hence why they will still take the lead a bit likely. But depending on the range it gets for its boost clock... AMD might eek out some wins.

    I build my pc in january 2023 and used a 7600x with an upgrade to x3d cpus later in mind. My cpu might bottleneck my 4080 a little bit (would not buy it today. Back then there were only bad deals for highend gpus. Right now a 7800xt for 499€ is a far better deal unless 4k raytracing is your priority) but so far i never ran into a scenario where my cpu wasnt able to give me good fps in any game. A 7800x3d might be a lot better, but i feel like there is no usecase in gaming for anything faster than 7600x right now. So a 7800x3d is already pretty much a cpu that will probably last multiple years without bottleneck on gpu in real life scenarios (not 1080p 500fps and stuff like that).
    That means a few % faster on the new generation is pointless for gaming?

    AMD is using Blender to show efficiency improvement might ended up causing disappointment since Blender has the biggest performance increase due to improved AVX512 if I'm not mistaken thus would not translate to most application. For example, I doubt we well see 9700X 11% faster than 7700X in CB MT. Heck, I suspect It will ran slower at its default TDP. This is not because 9700X is inherently slower but it is simply TDP limited. This is also why with PBO 9700X got the biggest increase since compared to 9600X and 9900X, it is an 8core CPU being given the same TDP as 6c CPU. And the other one is 12c at like 2x the TDP of 6c. Basically the most representative CPU to actually compare architectural improvement is 9950X since it has the same TDP as 7950X. For the other SKUs, AMD sacrificed some performance for efficiency. Having said that, this will mainly affect all core workloads like CB. For gaming the difference will be less.

They could release the Super series as the original 4070 and Ti and everybody would have been happy but they chose not to. Maybe they did it to make more money by keeping costs down but this hurt the 40 series because it was met with a feeling of dissatisfaction and gave more people reasons to buy AMD. The 40 series was not very well received in general, it was considered overpriced and giving only the bare minimum in terms of performance upgrade over the 30 series. This was corrected with the Super series but it was a bit too late in my opinion.

    AMD improvement's specifiying gains made in TDP (Thermal Design Performance), not to IPC (Instructions Per Cycle). Intel clarify, provide stats in all terms of CPU releases. AMD use Big, Little, per AMD Lisa Su relating to P+E found in Intel P Cores (performance) "Lion Cove" and E Cores (efficiency) or LPE (Low Power Efficiency) Cores "Crestmont Gold", upgrades the "Golden Cove" in Metor Lake (12-14 Gen), adding "Gold" to "Crestmont". Intel's Gen12 GPU cores, named Xe="eXascale for everyone". NPU cores in Lunar Lake, "Neural Processing Units", deal with AI workloads.

      AMD’s big / little is Zen versus Zen c. I don’t think the consumer Zen5 mix cores at this time. Also, I saw no conversation in the announcement that talked to a NPU integrated in Zen5 desktop. Maybe I missed it.

    If I remember correctly, 4 cores make a CCD and 2 of those make a CCX. And 2 of those make a Ryzen 9 x950 processor. If that's the case, I hope they move into 6 core CCDs

      @@Antares-dw9iv I got them switched around. So a 4 core CCX plus another one makes a single 8 core CCD. But my point still stands. If we get 12 core CCD with 2-6core CCXs, then we'll get a good 12 core X3D chip. It's about time.
