  • Dr. Vaniyambady Abdur Raheem is the author of the Madinah Arabic Books, a series that it could be argued is the most popular ever amongst English speaking Muslims.
In this rare interview in English, he shares some of his life experiences and describes some very interesting episodes from his personal life. He also gives his view on learning Arabic.
I wanted to make a point of interviewing him, in order to personally acknowledge and respect his great contribution to the learning of Arabic. His lifetime contribution deserves to be recognised.
    Enjoy!
Interviewed on the 10th of March 2020 in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarrah, Saudi Arabia by Dr. Sohaib M. Sandhu

Besides Mr. Meherali who is a good teacher, I also listen to a free website based in South Africa called Muslim Central for all the three books. It asks for donations for the brilliant lessons and you would give a donation ( with what you can) when you’ve listened to the wonderful reading. Sheikh Bilal, the teacher, has a lovely voice and goes through the Madinah Arabic books in a clear and concise way. You’re my hero, Sheikh Abdur Rahim!

I am 66 year old man, retired from higher grade of Govt. services of Pakistan. I am an experienced Engineer in Field, and teaching to my juniors. To learn Arabic is quite difficult for me, then how an average students of under graduate level, who could not got admission in normal colleges for graduation in art subject can claim themselves as master of Arabic languages and selling Fatwa's ? Is there more simple or specific method to teach such in religious Madrasahs ?

We are planning to do You tube videos starting at his Children's book (unknown to most, although available at Amazon). We would title these You Tube videos something like : Arabic The Way Dr V. Wanted It.....or something like that.
You see, the problem with the videos we have seen is that they teach Arabic in a non practical way. All you see is a video locked in on a teacher droning on. Sometimes you don't even realize there are students in the class. Literally. You need to see students, hear their reading, watch the teacher correct them, have THEM make sentences, make mistakes, be corrected, write their sentences on the board, do the homework assignments and have a student-teacher interactions.
That's how you teach language. Virtually all the videos (myself and Abdur Rahim) are NOT this. We are flabbergasted to see how almost nobody follows this methodology which is exactly how everybody learned Arabic from the Arabic center at Medina University which was under his control.
So.... so we are in the process of doing that.
We would video tape myself teaching a regular class (a bit drab, but practical nonetheless). The books will probably be free PDF downloads so that graveyard-shift worker can easily go thru a lesson per night. He can pause the video before the students do the exercises in the book. He can write them down on his Apple Tab thing whatchamacallit, and the teacher would then correct the students, and the viewer can see what he did wrong. This is a practical as we can make an online class so that the viewer CAN ACTUALLY learn - to some degree - the language.

Salaam Alaikum. Dear interviewer, it seems our Sheikh is not at all comfortable in his seat. Couldn't you arrange a good chair or sofa for this most honourable but physically vulnerable scholar to comfortably sit and talk? I am really disappointed to see him trying to cling in his seat. The other point is the place of this interview. You are introducing him to the world, at least to the huge number of Arabic language learners and scholars who did not see him and are interested to know about him and see him but the place and position he is sitting is very poor in terms of ambiance and environment. It seems to be a bookstore that became a makeshift studio for such an important interview. Last but not the least, your presentation, i.e., your way of questioning or asking information and interrupting his speech does show indecent attitude (I believe you do not have such an intention at all though). The overall presentation is not at all up to the mark! Yet, I thank you for trying to do something great but without proper preparation and planning and professional help. My deepest respect to our great Sheikh. May Allah azzawajal bless him with highest honour and forgive us the viewers of this video and enable us to be competent in Arabic language and be true Muslim. Ameen

WalaikumSalaam. Jazakallahkhair for your feedback. In fact the video recording took place in his house, in his library. He is a very busy person and so trying to get him at a time that suited him was important. I appreciate your point about him perhaps being uncomfortable. I would say that he was comfortable being at home and in his own environment. He is a Mujahid Ma Sha Allah. The purpose behind the interview was to recognise him for his services to Muslims. He deserves much more acknowedgement than this humble effort. It was the first time he opened up in my opinion, and I wanted to delve more into his life and how he came to this point in order to inspire others. Apologies if it looked like I was interrupting him, I could certainly improve. Believe it or not, this video was recorded on my phone and done with very limited resources. In Sha Allah I pray this effort benefits those who watch the video.

@@alif4386 Accept my apology for being too sceptical and perhaps a bit rude in my reaction. All my intention was to see both of you in a formal and fashionable environment (we are, nowadays, used to such views). Salaam

This is a video overview of 20 years of work of mine on Dr V.'s book.
It is 27 minutes long, - a *very* large file - but more exciting than a Spiderman film.
