47:16 "he simply smiled and said, "my poor lovesick girl. what won’t she do for a man she loves?” I AM CRYING I AM BAWLING I AM SOBBING. HER FATHER her father :(((
can we take a minute to be shocked by how respectful mary's dad was. Like he could have forced her into a marriage without love, he could have completely disregarded her love interest and even when he was getting poisoned by his own daughter he still wanted to respect her privacy!
When Eleanor said that he forgave his daughter even after learning she poisoned him, that brought tears to my eyes. I can’t imagine the level of kindness this man had.
Hmm... I read up on the case a little and it's theorized that Mary was considered unmarriageable and "old" precisely because her father kept putting off suitors he deemed unworthy while Mary was still considered marriageable and "young." It also said the Blandy family wasn't even as well off as purported and that her father could only likely afford to pay 4,000 of the 10,000 pounds he offered as her dowry.
I personally think that she truly believed it was just a love potion at first, but as it went on, she put the pieces together and just decided that keeping it up was a net positive for her and Henry.
100% I grew up in the town where she lived and been in the places she haunts, I always say hi to her as I truly believe she just wants her dignity back.
Omg PLEASE PLEASE do more of these historical cases.. Not many do it as well as you!! You speak as if it just happened and I love it! Anyone else who agrees please like this comment so Eleanor can see it!
Her father seems like a genuinely good father, most fathers back then would not care if their daughters husband was a good man or not and just wed them off but her father knew Henry was not a good man and wanted Mary to find better and yet got poisoned for trying to help his daughter get some sense
Tho to be fair they were sent by stage coaches then until the post office /royal mail was invented. But apparently that began in the 1600s in a limited way.
@@zombiechicken7114the Royal Mail was founded in 1635, but the first official mail coach wasn't until 1784, so post was either limited to the local area or sent by stagecoaches and travellers as you say.
