Dan, good to see wrecks still getting it done. Very cool it went to your dad. I had a black 2001 XJ for almost 10 years. Bought it with 138k on it drove it until 205k. She had a weird noise from bottom end the whole time. A mechanic who changed my rear main seal said everything was tight (bearing cap bolts, rod end bolts) but I think it had a bad bearing somewhere but I’ll tell you what, she ran like a champ. I ran 10w30 conventional with 1 qt of lucas every oil change. I do miss my XJ, she was a good girl. Hope 2024 is good to you and yours 🤙🏻
great restoration, bro - classic XJs deserve to stay on the road ! The knock on this engine sounds like a piston slap/broken skirt. Check out with a stethoscope.

*and in case anyone was interested, i believe it varies slightly from the original Orvis (uk exclusive), but Spoilerlights has been recreating them. I have one to install on mine but repainting the rear hatch comes first.
This was the gen 2 from spoilerlights. I have an original Orvis spoiler from Germany on another hatch and another gen 2 still in the box. Unfortunately last I heard they were all discontinued

Before you do anything to the engine check the bolts on the flex plate to the converter. They tend to get loose and back out hitting the bell housing. Good luck

Dan or any others who know xj. I have a 99 xj it’s rust free but the roof has rubber strips going down it that are peeling. If I pull them is there anything under them or is it just double sided tape holding them on. Also I remove 5he roof rack to do a good cleaning and buffing. Will 5he Rene holes under the roof rack holes or is it something like nutserts that the roof rack is bolted to the Jeep by . Need to sell it since I got my wj. Thanks for any help it’s appreciated.
Hey. You can peel the rubber strips but it will probably leave chunks of white double sided tape too in it which is hard to remove. Also if you unbolt the roof rack be careful not to strip the nutserts inside the roof. If you take out the T25 bolt there will be open holes in the roof.

Sounds like valvetrain noise to me! The play in the rocker pivots over time could be causing that

Engine noise: Throw in a can of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase. I'm thinking stuck lifter.
