This performance was awesome and personal. When he was sick of the abuse from his mom and step dad he told her he wanted 2 live with his father. His dad said bring him after work which was like 7 pm she sat him on the curb at like 11 in the morning with his stuff and just drove off. The day of his moms funeral he didn't even go he had a party. Came down the stairs sang this song went back upstairs for like 30 mins then came back and played for 6 hrs straight.
This is from a Spanish television show in 1999. This is based off an old spiritual slaves would sing. Twelve years old is when children would be taken from their mothers. Prince's mother died in 2002. Peace and be wild.
I'm glad that you liked it, the way he went from blues standard to almost metal guitar is incredible ( this is for sure the video to show to people who still doubt that he was a wonderful guitarist), and the way he conducts not only his band but also the crowd is another level.
But, this is at the same time heartbreaking, because he really was abandoned by his parents at a young age, and even 30 year later, his emotional wound is still deep, and the anger and despair he lets out on stage are not fake.
It is not only the adult musician who sings, but also the 12 years old little boy, rejected by his family who can finally express his anguish.
To think he had to live so long with such buried feelings is actually very sad. I doubt that at this precise moment, the audience was aware that this was kind of a therapy. But this is exactly my impression. This is not " pretty" to look at. It's fierce and quite violent, but really, he had to let it out (and that explain the stomping, mimicking a prisoner with a ball and chain tied to his foot, angry glance, musical distortion, almost self hurting movements...)
Powerful and cathartic video. I guess that he felt better afterwards.
I can partally relate, so I can say, "Thank you, Prince, you expressed my anger as well, but now you've got the biggest family, millions of people. So, I'll consider you as a big bro, and send you the warmest hug ever. "
But, yes, seeing this, it's easy understand why one of this side projects was called the Family, and why he insisted that his admirers were not to be called "fans", but friends and family, and so on.
Prince got kicked out by his mother then his father and had to live with Andre Cymone, whose mother took him in and they became like brothers and his mom was like a second mom to him.
THE PURPLE ONE!!!!!!(IS AT IT AGAIN)!!!!!!❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌👌👌👌
Fabulous performance 💜 one of my favourites. Just a masterclass in everything! And you can see it’s personal to him. Also it’s been said that just before this performance he found out his wife had allegedly been having an affair with a very young Spanish dancer. So that also may account for the emotion. How he arranges the song on the fly, bringing the band in and out, and using the audience as another instrument is phenomenal. Finally those guitar solos are fire 🔥🔥🔥
I am so happy that you reacted to this amazing performance. I love watching him conduct his band on the fly like that, and as several have already mentioned the emotion is real. Thank you!! 💜💜💜
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
