  • The Mauser 77 is excellent - yet not well known. The Golden Eagle by Nikko (Kanematsu Gosho) is rear locking like the Mauser 77. I have a Mauser 66 on the table as it was a contemporary of the Mauser 77. In error I say the Golden Eagle is by Miroku - I lost my concentration : it is made by Nikko - Kanematsu Gosho - also of Japan. Mauser Model 77 / Mauser 66 / Golden Eagle by Kanematsu Gosho (not Miroku) of Japan -- Let's learn together!

    USOG On My job once I got some 250 gallon totes to drain My Turbine Generator oil into that were marked Mauser. I looked this up and found out that the container company that had made these oil totes was actually a branch of the original Mauser Company. I thought this was neat. 7x64 is a fantastic cartridge! It was all the rage in Germany in the 70s to 80s, the ideal hunting cartridge for our game. Nowadays it has fallen into disfavor by the common buyer since now all what people want and buy is .308 Win.
    Which is good for us that are in the know, high quality Mausers in this chambering can be picked up rather cheap! I own a DWM Mauser 98 in 7x64, 58cm barrel length

    I had a 77 in 375 HH i used in African. It had a 4 power Schmidt & Bender scope with swing off mounts.
    It was on the heavy side and the set trigger position took some getting use to but it was a killing machine for sure.
    I also had the pleasure of handling a 66 in 243 Win if i remember correctly. That bolt slide arrangement was a work of engineering art. A sweet rifle.

    Hello Mike - long time fan from Germany here. We share a passion for certain rifles, I own a Steyr Luxus in 30-06, a Sauer 80 in 8x68 S, a Mauser 77 in 30-06 (second one in .270 with a full stock incoming) and a Mauser 66 SL in .308. I wanted to point out that the later models of the Mauser 66 were also available with the button on the stock to set the trigger (these models were called Mauser 66 SM or Mauser 66 SL depending on the grade of the wood). Thank you for your amazing content over all these years, much appreciated.

    In fact the second-hand prices of the 66 (not overly appreciated) are lower than the 77 at least in Spain (all below the M98). Anyone who sees those Apel, Mak or Rusan bases in Europe considers that the price can go up 300 Euros. The iconic European cartridges are, among others, the 7X64 Brenneke, 6,5X55, 6,5X62 freres, 7/8X57 mauser, the 8x68S, the 9s of german origin and the H&H magnum for big game with a lot of weight and resistance, although less frequent.

    7:47 there are many European types of cheek pieces, this one we call a Bavarian cheek piece. (note: a Bavarian cheekpiece usually comes in tandem with a Schnabel on the forearm, which at Stuetzen stocks show up half way the forearm)

    Ah my Mauser 77 i love this Gun i have one in 8x68s it is heavier than the 66 so the 8x68s is milder to shoot with the 77 in comparsion something like a 30.06 in a Blaser R93 or R8
    The 7x64 is still a very popular Caliber here in Germany i think one third of all Mauser 77 and 66 here in Germany were with this Caliber
    Big Advantage over the 270.Win (the 7x64 was created by Brennecke as Counterpart for the 270 in the early 1920 who was first nobody knows :-) ) is the bigger Sortiment of Bullets in 284 Diameter so Reloaders have more Choice at the Bulletweight and so on
    All big Ammunition Factorys sell Hunting Ammunition for this Caliber Lapua Hornady Sako Barnes Geco Rws Norma S&B ..... with different Bulletweights for different Game from Roedeer to Wildboar from Fox to Moose the 7x64 is very versatile in good Hands
    Greetings from Germany

    the nikko golden eagle found its way into my larder 30 yrs ago. unfortunately i was, by this time, unenamored of magnums, and this came in 7mm mag which has left it idle. i never ever came across the 77, which come hell or high water would have joined the fold (in any caliber, shootable or not). it would have been unsafe in my hands with that heat of the finger set trigger, but would still be on display where it's brilliance could occasionally be mesmerizing.. thanks for the candy.....

    I must say, I never cared for the European style of stocks, however you do get to have good eye to scope alignment. Despite what I consider an awkward looking stock. I was also not a big fan of rear locking, or cock on opening for that matter. But I have handled the Mauser and it was a nice feeling action. What really opened my eyes was years ago a Remington 788 in .243 came in which also is rear locking. And I was very impressed with the handling and the accuracy of that rifle. It's amazing how Remington, trying to produce an economy based and low priced rifle inadvertently produced one of the best rifles they have made in modern times. And this seems to be the norm for the 788. Well, regardless of the design, I think you will have done well with any rifle with the Mauser banner on the receiver ring.

    I live by the bolt lift safety, if not hunting from a stand. The only drawback is that it's a lot easier to lose the bolt.
    I leave the bolt open on my semi-automatics as well, when walking. It makes a bit of noise letting it ride forward, but by then the boars are already running. Nevertheless a great tip!

    Hi, a while back, I posted a question on one of your videos concerning the lack of a bolt release tab on a very early Mauser 66 that I own. Baffled me to no end, and could not figure out how get the bolt released without that tab that's on the later guns. Sorry, I can't find that original post/question, so I'll write this to convey what I've found. I've purchased a second model 66 last week, a stunning, never-fired gun that's flawless. Really an exciting find. I noted what that bolt release tab actually does, and discovered that it moves down a u-shaped device inside, which has tabs that stick up when not depressed, to keep the bolt group from sliding out the rear. On my early model 66 without that tab to push down that u-shaped device, just a small screwdriver does the job as well, pushing down that portion of that u-shaped device that you can see when the bolt group is pulled to the rear. Essentially, doing the same thing as the guns with bolt release tabs, but with a small instrument to do the job in the same place.
    I hope this makes sense. It was a huge frustration, especially since the Mauser owner's manual did not address the issue of guns with no tabs.
    Keep up your very fine videos! I always enjoy watching them, especially if they have anything to do with Mauser, Rigby or Blaser rifles.

    Yet another surprise rifle I didn't know about, thanks. We must be brothers from another mother because not only had I written bout my say "dislike" for the 66, but as soon as you picked what you said was the cheapest model I instantly could tell even before you pulled the action, I was going to like it better. Same as is in I would take the Howa over the Weatherby even if I had the money. Expensive is not sometimes always better, 95% of the time it is, but they we find this gems. I just got a Serbian Mauser NIB in .270 win $373 out the door, plus FFL fee of course. Had one in 7mm-08 form a couple of years now and I can't believe the price hasn''t gone up so even tho I don't need the .270 at that price I couldn't refuse. BTW the 7 is deadly accurate out to 100 yds with iron sights only. Can't wait to shoot the .270 and my new CZ FS in 30-06 snatched one up since they're not making them anymore.

      Thanks. I was thinking, Henry seems to have a philosophy which I like. Their new single action rifles and shotguns are indeed their most affordable models other than the .22lr plain model. I know the outside cover of the receiver of the pumps is some alloy, but some corners can be cut(is the receiver inside itself steel?) others not so much. If you can't tell am also a bit of a babbler, anyways what am saying is that us and I are in dire need of a review of a gun maker I may purchase a product down the road. All one can find mostly are reviews of the levers. The newer products including the .308/ .243 repeaters are mostly Henry promotional videos, not somebody taking them apart or shooting them. Jeez and I gotta save up for a Merkel too now? You've been a bad influence.....

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to read from you. As you know, Henry products work and are popular; but as you note...a lot of aluminum...which is not all bad. I'll get my hands on one or more and review. Thanks for suggesting.

      USOG i forgot the most important question. How are the new single shots, both rifle and shotgun. Also aluminum? I know you're busy business man, time is not of the essence.

    I could listen to you all day... Now the question about my first rifle is getting more and more complex : budget, history, quality, collectibility, reference to my home countries Austria /Hungary and Bavaria. Hmm... Don't even know where to start.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Woodsmans Finest - you'll probably be in a gun store or somewhere and pick up a rifle and something about the "feel" of the gun will be "right" - not necessarily quantifiable; and that will be it. At least that's what happens to a lot of people and happened to me . If someone asked me "Why that one?" - I wouldn't exactly know.

    Excellent video as usual, keep them coming. The 66 is a nice rifle but the 77 is odd in that it looks conventional, but has an unusual rear locking bolt. Also your tastes are not odd, just refined. What is the story behind the Webley flare pistol you have on the table ? I love all things Webley, but sadly they are now only a name on cheap imported guns.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I'm the same about Webley! The flare gun is part of a video I'm planning on flare guns - just didn't get to it yet. Too bad they use the Webley name the way they do now.

    my dad has a Golden Eagle in .375 H&H. It is a beautiful and incredibly smooth rifle. Unfortunately, it is in a caliber that makes it something of an artillery piece.

      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason - Yes indeed - only so many things for a .375 to do. I know some that load it lighter - but one has to fill the case enough so it is never a timid round as you know. Scarce and superb rifle though.

    Hey USOG i was wondering if you had any guns made by Johann springer Erben wein like a Mauser sporter if you will ??

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Duke - sacred ground : I had a Johann Springer combination gun - 16 over 7X57R and a kipplauf - 2 of the finest guns I ever owned. Stupid me sold them. There is something about Springers . Once, reflecting on guns with friends I was asked why I think Springers are so special - naturally I've seen and handles several. I answered : "It is as if they were born, not made." : ) I have fun with words sometimes. If you have one - keep forever.

    Hi USOG, what’s the material of the Triggerquard and the Floorplate of your Magazine ? Is it Aluminium? Mine is hardly worn out :(
    Or is the American m66 and m77 triggerquard out of steel????!
    Have you seen the „Steelaction HS or HM“? It’s a newer straight pull from 🇩🇪

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Zoes - RWS, Sellier & Bellot, NORMA and Wolf seem to cover most of the odd cals. There are some that are so old, no one makes them. I used to make some of the really old cals using .348 Winchester brass - which has a generous rim. One way or another it is possible to make cartridges for just about anything - although the rim fires can be challenging.

  • @aaronbuckmaster7063
    @aaronbuckmaster7063 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once fired cases properly resized for a particular chamber, will not have improper case lengthening. It sounds kind of elitist, but there is a difference between a reloader and a hand loader.
    That being said, those are gorgeous rifles. I did love seeing the 77 again. That’s what you get when someone loves and takes pride in what they do.

    The 66 looks like the too often German quark of over engineering every thing. The 77 looks like a great rifle wonder why they quit making it. The 7x64 is a great cartridge. It would do anything a .280 or 7mm magnum would do. Only problem would be you can't go to your local Wal-Mart and find it.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is true John - the 66 is an engineering adventure. No idea why they quit on the 77 - one of the best. Glad you know about the 7X64 - so many write me and have not heard of it.

    Do you wear a hairpiece? I'm emboldened by you intro to ask anything. Hope I don't offend. Your content is pure gold because I love bolt action rifles. Its because of the bolt. I only can think of one word to describe it: sexy. Not in a sexual way but it's just the only thing I can think of. I just like the way it slides and clicks and is so mechanical.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Aamir - not yet : ) There must be something about how my hair looks - you're not the first one to ask. I'm always happy to answer. I guess I should comb it differently - my hair gets so thick and heavy it probably looks like a helmet hahaha. Bolt actions are slick and your description is probably not far off. All the best.
