Pete. This is arguably your best ever summary of a Villa defeat.. There are not many of your British contemporaries who ever describe the errors made by individuals as you have just done. The three CB defenders are never in the right place to defend corners and each ones heading ability is questionable. Rogers, Cash and Watkins are all guilty of not looking for the simple pass to get out of trouble and end up putting us in deeper trouble. Oh how we miss the dominance of Mings at the heart of our defence. I love your passion and ability to explain in a rational manner your points of view. Keep up the excellent work.
Forest fan who discovered you after our match. A brilliant show, well presented, balanced review and generally really interesting. Keep up the great work and good luck for the rest of the season. 👍
Excellent review. Excellent point about Wood being offside winning the corner from Pau's header. I didn't spot that. I'm pretty confident that Jota wasn't offside though. I've rewatched the footage and you can't see Jota when the ball is played, but tellingly neither Carlos or Pau raise their arms calling for offside when chasing back.
Great analysis as always Pete. Very interesting points about the offsides too. All the Forest fans on here would have a very different view of the penalty incident had it been the other way round. The excuse by VAR of ‘fleeting contact’ is just a bullshit cop out. I was all for technology being introduced but given the absolute shitshow it is, I’d be ok if they binned it off completely. The standard of officiating is worse with it, not better. Let’s hope we don’t become the excuse for Man City getting back on track next weekend!
That game really boiled my p*ss at the weekend Pete. With the VAR going for us for a change, it was a chance to slow the game down, keep possession and kill the game... but what did we do, try and play everything out of defence and run with it needlessly. Another game where we had it in the bag, yet we managed to put it straight in the bin. You could sense the anger in Emerys voice after the game. Talk about frustrating . ruined the weekend !! Good review Pete !! Many City next and only Villa can ensure they get back on track !!
at 11:01 in YOUR OWN VIDEO you can clearly see how ONSIDE Jota Silva is when the ball is passed. Your own video. CLEAR AS DAY. Thank you. Rewind 3 seconds from the Anderson foul on Rogers (clearly a foul) and you will see an even worse foul by Rogers on Anderson. Pulls his shirt almost off his head. If VAR had proper powers of review they ought to have stopped play and given FOREST a free kick. No pen because play ought to have been stopped prior.
Rogers 'penalty' claim is a farce. Why is no one mentioning that Rogers had Anderson doubled over by pulling his shirt before the arm grab? 6 of one, half a dozen of another. With all that in mind, I loved this break down of the game, it's impressive to see someone from the North American continent with such a vast knowledge of the game, keep up the good work bud! (From a forest fan)
There was absolutely mutual pulling and tugging outside the 18. No argument there. But once Rogers beat him, that yank of the arm is a stone cold foul inside the 18.
Both players were pulling each other to start with. Ref didn’t give a foul so that becomes a moot point once Rogers is free. What happened after should have been a penalty. Look I know players from both clubs were pulling each other all game but that was a penalty.
Hello Sir, i enjoyed that, though i'm a life long Forest supporter in YVR. Miss your takes on things from the whitecaps eras . all the best to you and Villa this season
Because he asks for the flag it doesn't mean he's off side. On the clip there it's unclear and let's be clear, everything gets checked. As you can see with the disallowed 4 minute VAR checks. With the 2nd clip you played the just shows that Jota has run through. They check and triple check. With the penalty... Play the longer clip showing Rogers fouling Anderson. The contact was not fleeting. However the contact started outside and started again in the box. I agree that in isolation there is a foul on Rogers. Obviously given the other information, it's not a pen. Great analysis and approach 👍 really interesting
These are the VAR reviews and explanation extracted from ESPN, worthy of a look and thoughts: 1. Possible penalty: Challenge by Anderson on Rogers What happened: Morgan Rogers looked to run into the area in the 35th minute and went down after apparently being tugged back by Elliot Anderson. Referee Sam Barrott decided there was no significant impact on the Aston Villa player, and allowed play to continue as Anderson came away with the ball. VAR decision: No penalty. VAR review: We've had two similar situations this season, and perhaps that has created a precedent, whether that's the correct precedent is the real question. In September, West Ham United's Crysencio Summerville was having his arm held by Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, and the word "fleeting" entered the Premier League lexicon as Stuart Attwell on VAR chose not to send the referee to the monitor. The KMI Panel voted 3-2 that it should have been given by the referee, but 4-1 against a VAR overturn. In October, Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi appealed for a penalty for being held back by Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk. That was more "fleeting" and the KMI Panel supported no penalty on the field and through VAR. If a penalty had been awarded against Fofana, would Anderson have escaped his tug back on Rogers? The challenge by Anderson on Rogers is similar to that of Fofana, though arguably not as "fleeting." That said, had the VAR, John Brooks, decided that this was a penalty to Aston Villa, it's highly likely to have been canceled out as Rogers was strongly pulling Anderson's shirt first. The VAR decided Anderson hadn't fouled Rogers for the penalty, because the referee would have had to judge both offences at the monitor. Ergo, Barrott would have been sent to the screen for a penalty review but would also have been shown the initial foul by Rogers. In April, there was a monitor review for a penalty to Brighton against Brentford, but Lewis Dunk was shown to have fouled Yoane Wissa before Wissa pulled back Dunk, so the restart was a free kick to Brentford. Verdict: Precedent clearly must have a strong influence, and we've now had three examples of the arm being held that haven't been sent for review by the VAR. This was the clearest case of the three, and perhaps the way Rogers fell forward rather than backward influenced the VAR. Either way, because of the initial foul, Villa wouldn't have been given a penalty. 2. Possible disallowed goal: Challenge by Anderson on Cash What happened: Nottingham Forest won the game in the third minute of stoppage time, but was there a foul in the buildup by Anderson on Matty Cash? VAR decision: Goal stands. VAR review: It was a strong challenge by Anderson, but he gets his foot to the ball, so the goal isn't likely to be ruled out on review. Verdict: No VAR intervention. more info: www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/42964020/the-var-review-andrew-robertson-red-card-liverpool-wrong
Very intelligent analysis. Yes, there were some questionable moments and refereeing decisions. We can argue about them forever. Bottom line is we beat a tiring side. A great result for us. Villa are a good side but the CL is effecting them. Just my view. And of course, there are no easy games.
Thanks for the review Pete, it really helped me digest the whole game. Watching the game I thought the same as you on the arm pull in the box and on the second goal offside, I missed the other offside. Linesmen seem very quiet these days, it looks like an unfortunate side effect of VAR. Result was a shame but the fact the game was so competitive I took as a good sign, Forest are difficult to beat, like us they have a great manager, we were very close to a win. This is the new premier league, and I prefer it to the old 5 horse race between London and the north west! UTV. 👍⚽️
Thanks again for a great analysis Pete. It is crazy hot here in the land of Oz at the moment and there is no comfort coming from these performances at the moment. But there is hope! UTV!
That save and that goal should have been match winning. The quality of both especially the save was fantastic. The goal came from nothing, we were too narrow. A downside of playing three CB's. But he seems to get goals out of nothing. The power and direction he got on a ball coming over his shoulder was top drawer. You won't see much better than that save either. Bad refireeing and poor individual errors cost us a vital win. But credit to Forest. They had us pinned back and we crumbled. Everyone has talked about the defenders mistakes but you defend from the front. Rogers needs to know when to not try to turn and dribble. Ollie just just cannot under any circumstance when we're under pressure give the ball away cheaply like he did during that spell, which a few phases of play later ended with them scoring. He's playing so badly at the moment he can't even complete a five yard pass, and it's really boiling my piss. Wake the f up Ollie, it's December and he still can't get any kind of decent form going.
Although it can be frustrating when Rogers Holds onto it, he's been asked to do that by the manager. I'm no expert but I'm guessing it's to draw players in, opening up space. UTV
The apparent Jota offside will never be called offside as he is not near the ball, he can be on the goal line but as long as he is not interfering with the play it will not be called. This happens in many games and is the standard. Not sure why you think it is offside ?
Villa's shortcomings aside (which were also undeniable), glad you caught those offsides as well. I was wondering if I was seeing things since none of the refs seemed to! Increasingly seems like referees decide to forget the rules whenever the Villans come to play.
the two apparent offsides both look onside, diego carlos is the closest man to the goalline not Pau and for Jota you haven't shown a clip that even has him in frame when the ball is played, you got beaten by the better team on the day accept it and stop trying to play the victim
We are not big enough to compete in two majors leagues, with the way its going we are going to win the CL and finish 15th!! Always look forward to your expert summary. A win over a dodgy looking city on Saturday and it still might be a good Christmas, keep the faith UTV
Love the show Pete. Is hard to accept the losses, but is better to turn the negative into the positive, and learn from those mistakes that you mentioned. We are doing just fine, sitting in 6th place and doing well in the Champions league.
Regarding the penalty shout you can clearly see from the first frame you show that Rogers is pretty much pulling the shirt of off Andersons back (if you look at the MOTD analysis it is even more clear) so the first foul was Rogers and play should have been stopped at that point. So sorry no pen. Just look at the whole passage and sensibly I think you will agree.
If it had been the other way around you'd have called for a penalty no? But I do see your point. I'm sure Villa fans would be making the same argument as you if it had been the other way around, such is football.
@@simeonlp Yes I think that would have been my immediate reaction but having seen the full replay I am sure I would have revised my view on it. I suspect that VAR took the view that it was a 50/50 tussle that just carried into the pen area.
Great video, I felt the Watkins cross that you said was bad was actually Onana's fault. Watkins ls playing the ball for Onana to run up on to it. Onana is asking for the ball through traffic and then standing still.
Good re cap, stats suggest we had the better of the game but didn't feel like it. The pen/non pen was 100% a pen last year but they have changed how they look at it, and yes you look at the pull you have to look at the shirt tug, but they never give them that way so you were unlucky. Great recap always like catching up on these after we play each other.
It's amazing how bias works huh? I was going nuts through most of that game cos your guys were constantly throwing themselves to floor & the ref fell for it 9 out of 10 times & that penalty appeal....if Rogers hadn't tried to rip Elliot's shirt off his back he wouldn't have been in that position so no penalty is justice. We may have had a couple of favourable decisions in good positions but honestly, it's about bloody time!!! You'll have games where those decisions go in your favour I'm sure, if you're humble enough to admit it. Anyway, it's done now & nothing will change so meh. Good luck to you in the Champions League, I'm rooting for you 🙂 Just don't let the red scum win it.......
It was definately a foul, and a cold stone penalty. However, it it went to VAR, He would of clearerly seen that Rodgers was pulling the forest players shirt first and would of been right to give a forest free kick. Sad to admit . All in all, we didnt deserve to win the Game. I dont think 3 centre backs helps us from an attacking point of view. In Unai we Trust!! UTV!!
You can't comment on the penalty without first addressing the foul on Anderson. That is the only reason Rogers gets into the box in the first pace. Also, the Jota and Wood offsides are very unclear from the images that we have. Otherwise, good analysis.
Our decision making is often annoyingly juvenile. We are almost guaranteed to play the wrong ball in the danger area and its excruciating. Agree about linos not taking responsibility for clear offsides. But what about illegal corners ( ball clearly not in quadrant)? And whatever happened to indirect freekicks for obstruction?
VAR is done wrong the whole thing is. The linesmen are there to award throwins corners help with free kicks let every play be subject to the auto offside stuff.
Fair play too you bud. I sent you a fiver a month back when you were gonna leave you tube, been with you since your 2nd video. Bet ur buzzing how it's all turned out. Utmv xx
Unless we shore up the defense and significantly, i don`t even think we`ll get Europa League next season. We`ll be lucky to scrape top 10. Not enough players at it, shocking cb partnership in Pau/Carlos......and around half a dozen sides better than they were last season.
Officiating was atrocious. Some officials are definitely intimidated by home ground noise. Hopefully they cop some bad officiating when they come to Villa Park. Then we’ll see who’s salty….
It’s a credit to you Peter that, Win lose or draw, there aren’t many Chanel’s that have me looking forward to the next episode no matter the outcome. And a nice surprise in there, with the content thrown in, once again my pleasure. A beautiful stadium to visit much like our own, rich in history and oozes football of the old. A rare site to enjoy these days Up the mighty Villa 💜🩵
Again like I've seen from a lot of villa fans you take the Morgan Rogers "penalty" claim out of context because in the build up to that penalty shout how does Rogers get in front of Anderson he decides he wants to rip Andersons shirt of before the end of the game, the decision is a game of 6 and two 3s
looking forwards to onana and boob having an outing soon,, just to give tman a rest or a option further up the pitch thought they looked controlled,,,,
Wouldn't have even been in the penalty area if he hadn't fouled the Forest player beforehand, that's why it really wasn't given. Look at it again...six of one and half a dozen of the other.
emery told rodgers to go at the defence even if he loses it,, to me its like baking the best cake ever and icing it with a turd,, he will learn and get that when to release realisation with experience
There's some Villa biast in you analysis, and your really scraping the Barrel your off side calls are wrong for a start, you can see the Jota one was onside when you watch it in slow motion ,as for the Wood one he was clearly offside but if the defence left the ball and let it fall to Woods it would have been called off but he heads the ball as if he needs to so its his mistake, no offside there mate , why don't you mention the Martinez foul on Dominguez or the perfectly good goal we had chalked off ,or the Morgan foul on Anderson ,sometimes you just have to be more gracious in defeat and acknowledge Forest played better on the day and deserved the win ,I think you have the better squad but we are getting closer.
No pen Rogers clearly pulled Andersons shirt before they got into the penalty area, you conveniently cut off the clip. Bottom line is you tired badly in the last 20. Good luck to Villa for the season. COYR
Villa have a soft underbelly, and need Mings or another CB to dominate. Pau & Konsa (+Carlos) are too passive. Villa also have a tendency now to create goals in clusters - 2 against B Dortmund pre season 33 & 35 mins, Arsenal 67 & 77 mins, Everton 16 & 27 mins, Forest 87 & 93 mins, plus the 4 in the 2nd half at Spurs. Poor game management & decision making.
The refs are either bent or incompetent. And I'm struggling to believe they're this incompetent. And the players seem browbeaten into no longer challenging refs on obvious wrong decisions that VAR arbitrarily decides not to look at.
offside = WHEN THE BALL IS PLAYED NOT 2 seconds after the ball is played (Jota was on side when the ball was played) - and NOT when you do not play the ball (Wood did not touch the ball if the defender had left it and Woods was in offside position and touched the ball then it is offside) READ THE LAWS OF FOOTBALL
Probably Elliott Anderson wanted to swap shirts with Rogers after he had nearly ripped Anderson's shirt off his back prior to him getting in the penalty area. Surely you didn't miss that.
@@codyjarrett9685 then what about emi Martinez holding dominguez Arm before he makes a world class save Roger was perfectly fine. It's a contact spot. But if you look closely at Roger he kicks himself on the knees which makes him fall down
The penalty shout was interesting. At first glance I thought it was a penalty. After watching the slow motion replay it was clear that Anderson had had his shirt pulled quite aggressively before Anderson touched him. Knowing that it’s. Free kick to Forest BUT No one actually knows the rules for penalties any more as it changes depending on the Ref and the situation. The reason given for not awarding it was pretty poor, but as Rogers pulled back Anderson to start with think it was a good decision. Ref was letting a lot of things go where another Ref would have already carded 5 or 6 players, crazy really. Did he see the pull on Anderson or not, only he knows that. Would be great to finally get the rules simplified as it’s so hit and miss right now
I read the rules again. Also offside if he interferes with an opponent. Woods jumped for the ball so was he not interfering with the defender whilst in an offside position? Could not find footage on Jota so I will take your word on that one.

UTV!!
What about Morgan Rogers pulling of Elliotts shirt before they got in the penalty box
You can't comment on the penalty without first addressing the foul on Anderson. That is the only reason Rogers gets into the box in the first pace.
Also, the Jota and Wood offsides are very unclear from the images that we have.
Otherwise, good analysis.
Completely robbed by the ref, didn't even notice those two offsides
Deluded
Our decision making is often annoyingly juvenile. We are almost guaranteed to play the wrong ball in the danger area and its excruciating. Agree about linos not taking responsibility for clear offsides. But what about illegal corners ( ball clearly not in quadrant)? And whatever happened to indirect freekicks for obstruction?
Dracula was mad crossed
Only offside if you touch the ball.
Seems that way. Same as cash’s goal against Brentford
I mean that's not true, you can be interfering and be offside without touching the ball. I'm speaking generally not about this specific game.
He could not give a penalty because Rogers had half pulled Andersons shirt off in the same action. If anything it would've been a Forest free kick.
I mean it should of been a free kick before the penalty anyway rogers was grabbing Andersons shirt first
You mentioned Neal rioch do you mean Bruce
At 9.35, your player in front of the goalkeeper puts Chris Wood onside
are you looking at the same frame freeze as everyone else, thats a clear offside position for Chris wood
Officiating was atrocious. Some officials are definitely intimidated by home ground noise. Hopefully they cop some bad officiating when they come to Villa Park. Then we’ll see who’s salty….
Pete mate were getting in the champions League next season....were winning it this year then finishing 12th just for banter
A rare site to enjoy these days
Up the mighty Villa 💜🩵
Again like I've seen from a lot of villa fans you take the Morgan Rogers "penalty" claim out of context because in the build up to that penalty shout how does Rogers get in front of Anderson he decides he wants to rip Andersons shirt of before the end of the game, the decision is a game of 6 and two 3s
looking forwards to onana and boob having an outing soon,, just to give tman a rest or a option further up the pitch
thought they looked controlled,,,,
Wouldn't have even been in the penalty area if he hadn't fouled the Forest player beforehand, that's why it really wasn't given.
Look at it again...six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Six of one, half a dozen of the other, yes! outside the box,not inside! definitely pen.
That would’ve been an acceptable reason to not give it. It wasn’t the reason they gave though
The defence is terrible, especially Cash Carlos and Torres.
emery told rodgers to go at the defence even if he loses it,, to me its like baking the best cake ever and icing it with a turd,,
he will learn and get that when to release realisation with experience
COYR
Not how the VAR justified it though
@@nottopcat5956 correct communication was poor
We missed a natural loud talking leader on the pitch … Mings may have done that … no one else does that role … that’s what we lacked ….
Your wine is crap its down to your sour grapes
What’s this logic came up with some low goal pathetic statistic then says if you score when you don’t score much you gonna win? What’s this logic
Bounciy Bouba
poor substitute cost villa the game why take off Duran, Kamara an telemond🤔😐
Keep hold of Duran, he's special.
offside = WHEN THE BALL IS PLAYED
NOT 2 seconds after the ball is played (Jota was on side when the ball was played)
- and NOT when you do not play the ball (Wood did not touch the ball if the defender had left it and Woods was in offside position and touched the ball then it is offside)
READ THE LAWS OF FOOTBALL
Does this guy actually know the offside rule?!?! 😂😂😂😂.
Bad loser
As Villa fans, we're upset to lose of course. But this video is NOT an example of a bad loser.
murphy hates villa,, he once says he never played at a full villa park,,, he is a sausage chomper of the highest order
I saw the offside, var should retroactively act
Stop complaining and yapping your defence shouldn’t let it happen in the first place so you lost we won you bottled we came back.
Probably Elliott Anderson wanted to swap shirts with Rogers after he had nearly ripped Anderson's shirt off his back prior to him getting in the penalty area. Surely you didn't miss that.
Biased point of view
@@codyjarrett9685 Right back at you.
@@codyjarrett9685 then what about emi Martinez holding dominguez Arm before he makes a world class save
Roger was perfectly fine. It's a contact spot. But if you look closely at Roger he kicks himself on the knees which makes him fall down
Slightly hyperbolic but I see your point 😂
bouncy hair kamara is best
Rogers is a dirty player. Even if given the penalty it will still be 3-2, elanga is never offside. Video is showing from the top not the sides.
Shopping at new year
9:49 give up, we won as we was a better team, even you said you had 3 gifts and you want more
Jheez
The penalty shout was interesting.
At first glance I thought it was a penalty. After watching the slow motion replay it was clear that Anderson had had his shirt pulled quite aggressively before Anderson touched him.
Knowing that it’s. Free kick to Forest
BUT
No one actually knows the rules for penalties any more as it changes depending on the Ref and the situation.
Would be great to finally get the rules simplified as it’s so hit and miss right now
Get stuff you deserved it and Var checked it and was correct
And number 2 what about how he was pulling our players shirt
subs are not working , some need to stay on longer.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you reds.
It should have been a free kick to Forest never a penalty to Villa. Watch the clip again.
By the way is some insane analysis 😂 these are fantastic spots by you for the offsides.
Neither were off side:
Woods did not touch the ball (Read the laws).
Jota was onside WHEN THE BALL WAS PLAYED
I read the rules again. Also offside if he interferes with an opponent. Woods jumped for the ball so was he not interfering with the defender whilst in an offside position? Could not find footage on Jota so I will take your word on that one.
You Know Wat Happens Pete Wen Ever A Team Needs A Win And Points Play Villa We Will Treat You 😂utv
Show me you don't understand football Clearly neither wood or Silva are off side 😂
Not your club mate
Whole video’s an ad
Boo hoo move on 😂😂😂😅😅😅😅
