I actually remember seeing on Fox News, some guy claiming to be a Rabbi, complaining that a Priest, during the occupation, who had hid a few hundred of his people from the Nazis, didn’t do enough, because the priest didn’t go out in the streets, to protest the Nazis and their acts in the Holocaust, potentially sacrificing his life, and the lives of the hundreds of hundreds of people he was hiding. Of course, I still haven’t seen this guy lead any rallies against the Chinese, and their genocide of the Uhgyrs. Sooooo... America quite literally furnished the bulk of the war against Imperial Japan and their war crimes and the war against the fascist forces in Europe. Nearly 420,000 American lives were lost in combat and the near economic ruin that America experienced to correct the poor way the European nations handled the closure of WW I and the Germans, having nearly 1/3 agreeing with Hitler, was apparently not enough of an effort by America? Yes, in hindsight we can always do more, but this quick snapshot of the "angle" pursued by this documentary seems a bit finger-wagging at America. I don't know, I have loved every Ken Burns documentary, though a little preachy in spots, they are always well done. I will still watch it, but I am unsure about this predetermined angle approach that he says they took. There is a reason historians don't go into research with their minds already made up, you can find evidence to support nearly any opinion. Hope I am wrong.

If you've been to the us holocaust museum and got to the end, you would see photos taken by American planes of concentration camps. Photos taken by bombers that could have destroyed those facilities, their gas chambers and crematoria. There is no excuse. As a Jew who values being American, the fact that Americans allowed Jewish lives to be lost is important.

My Prussian Jewish Grandfather was brought to the US with his family on papers forged by his father. Otherwise they would have been killed in the concentration camps like most of his family. My grandfather also served in a front line field hospital in the US Army and was the only physician of the original eight to survive the war. One of the physicians he trained with lost it on their second concentration camp liberation and went for a short walk and put his 1911 in his mouth and went home. No one has seen the footage shot of the concentration camps at liberation, only the footage taken after a few days of clean up because it was that horrific. My grandfather thought the Soviets got at least one thing right, as they interrogated the SS camp staff and then shot them all...
What Ken Burns did was to doccument what I already knew growing up. That we could have done something, but since American Jews were so hated the government failed to act. Part of the Beauty of America is that we have taken refugees seeking a chance, as these refugees become some of the greatest patriots. Unfortunately this comments section is being hit by the neo-Nazis and Bigots. But to answer your question, we could have taken in refugees like the passengers of the St. Louis and we would have had more dedicated men in US uniform fighting the war. We also would not have had a shortage of translators if we took more of these refugees which would have significantly helped our war effort...

If you use the term ‘Holocaust’ to refer to the Nazis’ other crimes, you’re missing the point of the Nazis’ plans and the consequences of those plans.

In the 1920s - you can look them up on the Library of Congress site - there were ads explicity denying job applications to non-English-speaking people or to "No Irish wanted" (those attitude affected some of my ancestors).
I can understand an employer not wanting to have riled-up employees talking trash to his or her face and not knowing what was being said because the speakers did not or do not speak their language. There is a far cry between the worry over that, which can be obliterated by humane practices int he workplaces, and the explicit or implicit discrimination against any group that wants to work.
Also after 2 world wars against Germany, the large German-American population, which was, as Burns-Botstein-Novick wisely point out, was itself divided, caught Hell and has never really recovered.

Biblically it is because they are God's chosen race. Historically it is a very long answer, but I will give you a brief summary. By the time WW II came around antisemitism was a large case of the have and have nots and the socialist movements across Europe following the turn of the century. Now include they were unchristian in Christian lands, and many Germans blamed stereotypical greed for the poor conditions in Germany during WW I and the poor terms they received from the Treaty of Versailles. As for America, America hated even Catholics at this time in history. They hated any group that may bring foreign influence into their culture that could not or would not assimilate. Italian and German immigrants brought their prejudices over from Europe in the mid-1800s and again in the first half of the 20th century. So there was a massive amount of European baggage entering the borders, regardless of how America wanted to perceive the forced assimilation measures instituted by Theodore Roosevelt. You also had the money and cultural influences of Hollywood at the time, where many major studios were being created, owned, or purchased by people with Jewish backgrounds. This is one reason J. Edgar was so distrustful of them. Disney disliked them for this reason as well. Henry Ford and other venture capitalists around the globe feared that the Jewish money could buy political favor more readily and their ties with the European unionization also created an atmosphere of distrust. As I said the answer is quite lengthy, and these are only some of the reasons most of the western world was anti-semitic in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Psychologically is also quite simple. If you want to see people enraged, or turn against their neighbor let them be in or near the majority and then present a threat to them. The more precise you can be with how to identify the threat the more extreme the majority will turn. The German and Soviet propaganda machines knew this all too well. Same as our political leaders in the west know it today. Hope this answers your question.

Three days later she, her mother and two sisters were taken to the concentration camps. She never saw her mother again. One other sister survived. She met and married an American soldier. She came to the U.S. and together they raised a beautiful family.
