    I admire your courage and perseverance!! I had a Land Rover for 10 years… it cost me thousands of euros in maintenance and repairs. I loved my 'Disco', but suddenly I was done with all the rust, oil leaks, repairs… I then wondered why all the effort, expense and frustration?? I now own a Toyota Land Cruiser… perfection! 😉

    Great work Sophie. Saving a 3 door is a labour of love and you are a true inspiration for many. It’s not a problem I have any more, but please remember to tie your hair up around drills etc to save any painful accidents 😀

    Small tip - when grinding welds, especially on sheet metal, use a grinding disk rather than a flap wheel. As the flap wheel has a bit of give it means that it'll also sand down the areas surrounding the tacks, whereas a grinding wheel is stiff so you can focus on just the tacks. A flap wheel can then be used to finish off.

    Holy hell... I mean, I knew you were brave, but I had no idea about the scale of things... Tackling a project like this, that most people wouldn't even touch with a ten feet pole, is what really makes you and this channel stand out!

    Great video and a great job you're doing!!! Fabricating metal is exhilarating, isn't it?!?! Small tip: as you tack the repair panels in place you can peen the tack beads with a chasers or a peening hammer (backed, of course, with a dolly). This will stress-release the beads and also counter-act the shrinkage of the beads from cooling. Actually, a similar technique is used welding cast iron. Good stitch-welding is a very much under appreciated technique; yours is a bang-up job. Well done and Cheers!
    Oh, and please mind your hair up around those drills! I'm looking forward to seeing your next video!

    Great job so far Sophie, your welding looks just fine, and your preparation and process is spot-on. For areas with excessive gap, learn to add additional wire filler with your free hand as in the manner of TIG process, this will also minimize weld zone heating. Looking forward to your next episode. Best regards from New York State.

  • @blastingweevil2968
    @blastingweevil2968 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    GREAT JOB ON THE WELDING YOU DID IT JUST RIGHT lots of little tack's to stop the metal warping due to heat. i would advise that when welding either spot welds or welds that leave bare metal surfaces you use a Weld through primer it will stop rust getting hold from the inside.

    You know you have rust problems when the scrap part you buy is in better condition than what you already have.
    The welding is going very well, flatted down then slightly filled it will look perfect.
    At least this time you aren’t in the garden doing most of the work so it should be a bit more comfortable for you working.
    You’ve developed some great skills and are making excellent use of them, well done on great work Sophie!

    Sophie, I've been there and got the T-shirt, word of advice. Strip the shell and take it to be blasted. Seriously. Just do it. Get it back, weld her up, and if you can afford it, get it galvanised! It would be epic. Talk to the yard and they will make sure the process is done slowly and ask for an air dry and it won't warp - any doubts you can brace bits then cut them off after galv. You would end up with a Disco that would be worth a fortune too.

    • @LandRoverSophie
      @LandRoverSophie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip, I thought this myself. Unfortunately, I don’t have the money or time to do this - I don’t have long left in the unit (it’s a family members). In an ideal world, this would be heavily considered but unfortunately it’s not a position I am in!

    Excellent job and determination! Just one note (from someone who restores american classics) Protect your glass while welding. The smallest of sparks from a Mig welder will instantly melt and inbed themselves into any glass surface. Even just a few tacs can ruin a nice piece of glass.

    I had a 1989 Disco until a few years ago and do miss it, I did plan to refurb it similar to what you are doing but unfortunately due to circumstances at the time I had to scrap it. I completely agree with your comments about water leaks and the havoc they can cause. Really impressed with what you're prepared to have a go at - looks like a quality job so far. When you get as far as the front if you're looking for inner wing parts Froggats do lots of stuff under the "easy on" name. (I have no connection with them and have never used the panels but you might want to give them a go!)

    Hi Sophie, really interested in this project as a 300tdi Disco owner. A couple of questions: 1) Is the roof skin aluminum? 2) What is the difference between the 200tdi engine and the 300tdi?
