Duhduh sten , You cannot practice Buddhism and be a Christian at the same time. Only because Christianity is not a religion it is ordained by God. When a man starts thinking that he’s in control he’s putting God aside.

@Tony Droid Actually Buddhism is a science. When you distill it down to it's very basis it is the science of Cause and Effect. Try look at Buddhism in this way I think you will understand it a bit more and come to realize that Buddhism is actually a logical, coherent philosophy.

@@DougsDharma I use to be Christian, but I don't think God is there, and if he is he is doing a pretty bad job, objectively speaking. I remembered reading books about Buddhism and it seemed like a really peaceful way of seeing the world. However, what is the point of being kind to others? If it is to end suffering then I do not believe that mankind has the power to end suffering for all just by kindness. Natural disasters will still bring us pain and suffering right? I am genuinely asking this because I want a purpose in life a purpose to be alive. I thought the purpose was to find Nirvana to get to a place where you are not reborn over and over in suffering on Earth. If you have no core belief system hedonism seems to be a good way to bide your time until you die, but I don't want to live/die that way. I don't want a rat race to pleasure and death. I want to smile and enjoy life as death takes me over the course of time.

@@walkerfharris the purpose of buddhism is for you. to acquire the true meaning of life by looking deep within oneself. and in that clarity, those who watch your kind development will follow by example. in this considerate domino effect, our world will change for the better.

exelisio yea but when though? It makes sense what you’re saying but the domino effect you speak of may never come definitely not in this lifetime you can keep doing this over and over but you don’t control the world just yourself so I see Buddhism as an self investment, something that only I can learn for myself in my position at the moment.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it is 100% true. And it’s not a dark or negative thing. It’s liberating. You just have to learn to healthily detach from outcomes.

Hi. I was also raised Christian (ELCA Lutheran, not Catholic). I can really relate to this comment because I was an athiest/agnostic for many years before following Buddhist meditations. For me, I discovered that it is not that I have an aversion to religion or beliefs. I just needed a system that did not have belief in a literal deity as the central element. As well, having it be based on a system of actions and meditation as opposed to a set of family and social roles as in Christianity was also helpful to me.

Thank you for clarifying what Buddhism is all about.
I've had a difficult life and in the recent year I've been learning about Buddhism because I truly feel the ideas resonate with my own, and I also believe it will help me be more at peace with myself and the world around me.

I try as best I can to practice the parts of it I know of but it's hard to be consistent, and i feel so alone because there is no one to tell me where to go, or have community with through religion. i like Buddhism because it doesn't demonize. It recognizes me as a human being with possibilities of flaws and capacity for higher mental achievement. It also doesn't let me accept things blindly. I still make mistakes or think unwholesome thoughts but I am aware I must overcome these through Buddhist teachings and also Stoicism.

I'm unbelievably happy to find this channel, and the wider secular-buddhism movement as a whole. I'm an atheist in the sense that I don't believe in any kind of higher power, but I do think that we've evolved with a longing for tradition and ritual, so this kind've non-theistic religion is absolutely perfect to me, as I can maintain my atheistic non-belief, and also practice in a way that helps give my life some of that ritualistic elements humans crave. I think that even aside from that, many of the teachings about the nature of suffering, and the idea of non-harming, are absolutely incredible sources of wisdom. You're cultivating something really great here, thank you.

I have gone through life fascinated by kindness, how it costs no money nor time in its raw form. In my past few years I have taken extra time and care into kindness and compassion, observing it in real life and purposefully forming my life by always powering through hard times with positivity. This year has been a trying time for myself and family, almost losing my brother having an awful accident half way across the world, my mother having a health scare, and more. But through each disturbance I used my kindness and compassion and positive mindset as a support not only for myself but for my family too. I have never looked in to religion, being atheist, but I have recently found Secular Buddhism and since my life feels right, almost as though Buddhism was made for me as I read more and more into it. Doug your videos are amazing and have showed me the wonders of Buddhism! Do you have any suggestions on getting started in the religion and meditation and such?

    1. Are Buddhist temples open to new people?
    2. Should I learn more about Buddhism before I go to the temple or will someone there be willing to help me learn?
    3. What do I even do when I go to the temple?

Well, there are many different kinds of Buddhist temple, and I don't know what all of them might be like. But in general they are all open to new people, they will help you learn about the practices, and they will tell you what to do when you go there. I'd say see if they have a website first, it will likely say something for new people, they may have a weekly or monthly orientation session or the like. Or they will have a number or email you can contact for more information before showing up. I am most familiar with Zen and Insight/Vipassana centers and they are very friendly and open to new people.

I'm a Buddhist, this video is very accurate ☺️. I used to go to the temple every Sunday until I was 19. In the temple I would learn about Buddha, learn about the philosophy, pray and practice meditation. When I moved to the west for higher education, I lost touch with buddhism. My mind became chaotic and I was suffering.
I didn't realise how much peace of mind I was getting by following Buddhist practices. Now I'm practicing meditation again and following buddhism, along with other lifestyle changes I feel peace again.
Practicing meditation is like going to the gym. You need time to build muscle. And when you stop exercising your muscles become weak again.
In my experience, it is the same with meditation, you have to keep practicing meditation to experience the benefits of it. If you stop meditating, you lose progress. It is best to meditate for at least 5-10 mins daily.
This video summarises Buddhism and explains the benefits of meditation and mindfulness very well ☺️

I am also a secular humanist and have been for a long time. I've also been on Buddhist retreats (Triratna tradition) for some years and found that Buddhism ticked a lot of boxes for me (and I became a vegetarian after one retreat) but I just couldn't sign onto rebirth, deities, puja rituals. Finally decided to try and find out what the Buddha actually said and what happened to his teachings as they travelled out of India. Then found and read Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist and have now found Secular Buddhism and Doug and these videos and am having a wonderful time working my way though them. Doug, you are covering so many of my questions (and a few that I didn't know I had) so many thanks to you. And I'm trying to set up regular meditation practice so onward and upward. I have been going to a Buddhist temple for about 4 years now and we practice Tibetan Buddhism. I do still have a lot of questions about Buddhism that I'm eager to learn. Thank you for this significantly informative video for an introduction to Buddhism. I'm looking forward to watch all of your videos.

I have always liked Buddhism more than the other religions I know, but unfortunately my Methodist high school had a "religions" class where they misrepresented all religions other than Methodist Christianity to convince us Christianity is the best. Over 10 years later and I read a short passage on what Buddhhism really means, saw how badly it had been presented by the devout Christian "religion" teacher then came straight to your video to find out more. I think it aligns more with my personal morals, how I live and the journey I am on. I have been in treatment for PTSD for the past decade, and have found so much peace in radical acceptance and choosing to be kind. I want to learn more about Buddhism since I think I have been doing it by accident.

The first Buddha sermon was the Four Noble Truths; life is suffering, cause of suffering is craving, cease craving to end suffering, and the way to end suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path; right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration.

@@DougsDharma - I am happy to see your reply to old video. I think the intro was a bit long-winded and unclear for beginners. I feel we must be very concise. Using the right words may resonate with the mind without needing explanations.

I left the Mormon church a couple months ago and as an atheist, I still wanted a way to be a better and kind person. Buddhism is amazing because it doesn't focus around a God and just shows you how to live a good life.

I've been changing a lot recently and I realized that in a sense I've always been a Buddhist, where with most things my Motto has been "so it goes" as in, it is what it is, I can't change the world and how it moves, I can only change how I feel about it and react to it

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, while we can change some things around us, and work for deeper change in the world in the longer term, for the most part it is healthy to learn to live with the way things are.
