Elon Musk at Dealbook 2023 - Why he really told advertisers off

  • It brings me no satisfaction to say this, but what Elon Musk did yesterday at the Dealbook Summit - telling advertisers to go F*#$ themselves - did not surprise me. A few months ago I predicted we would see Elon Musk’s demons begin to dismantle everything he’s built and it's beginning.
There is still hope though and I’m sending him good vibes.

I just don't think that Elon Musk thinks the way you display here. I met him when I was a lead candidate for Neuralink architecture, and he seems to be more utilitarian than emotional. His idea is that if something doesn't fulfill company needs, it is not utilizable, thus it is something that can be emotionally denounced. For example, if an advertiser pulls out because of Musk's statements, he believes that ads were never utilizable in the first place, and thus a new business model (like post access crowdfunding) should be implemented in place of the ads. And then the denounce part is saying 'go .. yourself,' which is obscene, but telling. Musk simply doesn't settle on business models. He settles on utility. If a business model is failing due to industry issues, he believes that the best way to see positive growth is to reframe the industry through a new business model. I was just on a Zoom call with a buddy of his, where he said all of this (although paraphrased) with certainty. Not a Musk fanboy by any means. Also kind of intrigued by the complete inability of his critics to acknowledge that he is on the spectrum and will do what people might consider `emotionally cold` in the name of utility.

I agree with this. I thought it was a strategic move. I saw plenty of people say they signed up for Premium/Premium+ accounts after this. People will do anything for someone that they perceive is fighting for them. More verified accounts help with the bot issue, increases revenue from the users, and gets people used to the idea of purchasing on the platform. Isn't he trying to roll out some kind of store on X?
I also took it as a call to action to boycott these companies. "Let the chips fall where they may" was a statement that he was not going to sell out our freedom, and that people were waking up. Disney apparently forgot about Anheuser Busch. The whole reason that Elon bought Twitter was to preserve freedom. He lost money on the deal, so obviously money is not an issue for him, and it's his vision of what X can be that drives him. If X goes bankrupt, maybe he'll just start a new platform.
I thought that his statement about virtue signaling was great! I think Mark Rabo is wrong about Elon creating his own problems unless he considers trying to preserve freedom of speech as a problem. These large companies all get their marching orders from the large funds that hold the majority of their shares, and freedom of speech is not part of their plan. The X platform, and probably Elon himself, are definitely targets now because he's exposing all of these companies (and governmental agencies) and the games that they're playing. No wonder they're "uncomfortable."

im not a native english speaker. but the message including the exact wording seems very acceptable to me. It is very much in line of what you might hear in a casual conversation at work or in movies. Why people seem to be so shocked?

The world is changing. The big companies will lose control. Elon is just a pioneer in this promoting individualism and giving power back to the people.

Well its actually refreshing to hear someone powerful speak honestly rather than hiding behind lies and bs. It would obviously way heavy having so many people try to pull him down because they're not successful like him

I think he is right. I think he could start a trend and you could learn something without scolding him maybe? It is suicide however it is right. People follow right after all is said and done.

This is why he's a billionaire and you are not. He is not hating at all. He's being honest. Jealous? Also Elon said 'demons of THE mind', not demons of MY mind!' This disgruntled non-pro is misrepresenting Elons words and editing his remarks.

I’m actually amazed by Elon. Since Tesla, it’s been clear that there are forces trying to derail him from succeeding. With his wealth ( even before Tesla ), he could have walked away from all of it saying it’s not worth it, but he never did.
He’s basically standing up to what’s the equivalent of bullying in the business world.

What a lot of assumption...it makes a lot of sense that Elon Musk wants to expose the system, of advertisers trying to control editorial content. He has also addressed the issue of trying to work out how algorithm avoids advertising being placed next to content that is not in keeping with views of the advertiser. What is your drive to place this post?

He’s not a good person. Don’t fall for the branding propaganda. He didn’t make his wealth from nothing. His father was a billionaire and his mother a model. He’s always had a privileged life and is only famous because of his money to invest in these ideas.
