  • What would you bid with this hand? Let's look at some of the advantages of Drury.

In our partnership, we run 2sp as 3-7hp, drury 2c as 8-11 3card support and 2d as 8-11hp four card support. We open alot of 11's and every 12. it did happen during the christmas cup, and our opponents which is very conservative meant drury is 10-11hp,
The reason we bid weaker with 2sp is to not let people get in on the 2nd round of the auction with their length and 9-10 points. we want to end the bidding, and not let opponents sacrifice a 1-2down score in 3minor. also not let them easily bid 2 of a minor as lead directing either. so we adjusted it down to 3-7, and adjusted our drury down aswell.
What do you think? Do you think that's too weak of a drury?. If it is 10-12 that's correct, we would miss alot of opening hands I think around the 11-12hp mark. or just never get to bid drury..

Presumably this could be used with Acol too: bid 2C with four cards, 2D with five?

Absolutely! I think that would work well.

@@thebridgeteachers In the games I have seen in the UK I have only seen 2c as the Drury asking bid( 4 or 5 cards in support). Some do use reverse drury though.

@@doughill1945 It's just a question of if you value the option to show 3 card versus 4 card support or the ability to bid 2d more. I like the ability to show 4-card support because it helps me determine whether or not to make a move towards game with a shapely hand and I don't value the 2d bid all that highly.

I open weak four-card majors, so I play the single raise as 8-10 with three-card support and a ruffer, or four-card support. With an invitational holding, the response is 1NT, followed by a raise to three. With a minimum and four-card suit, the opener passes. With a minimum response, it's 1NT followed by a simple preference. This removes the need for game tries after a single raise. With a 16-count counting distribution, the opener bids game after a single raise. With a five-card suit, the opener rebids after a 1NT response., and with a good hand, can try again after responder's rebid.

at the end of the video you mention 1M-3M as 10-12hp, 3 card support and invite.
I would never play 1M-3M as invite. it's one of my standard demands in single tournaments. 1M-3M always pre-empt.. does not matter if you are 70+ and played this game for 40 years longer than I've lived. I don't want to play the weakest system as possible. 1M-3M as invite is a gift to the opponent. it means you are not going to pre-empt them when you are weak. you are going to always give your opponents free room to bid and find every partscore and game they have in their cards. Always. I'm not gonna allow that with 4 card support and 0 hp. I will pre-empt, might even bid 4 in non-vulnerable. especially over 1H-x-? and you got 2425 type of shape with 0 hp. I'd love to prempt. If 4th hand finds 4spades, they would have done it anyway. Sometimes x is not 4 card spades, but maybe a 16+ hand that wanted to rebid their suit the next time. or maybe 19-20 balanced that wanted to bid NT. sometimes they get in 4spades without a fit. Pre-empts is extremely important to have if you want to good in bridge. that's my opinion. if you have 10-11hp and invite. in 2/1. always go through 1NT first then bid 3M. if you've not moved to the light side yet, and still play basic 10+. (decent enough in matchpoint, but terrible in imp) go through 2clubs or 2diamonds. then rebid 3M. :)

Drury is an ugly convention. If you must play it, use 2 Diamonds only, not 2 Clubs. With real diamonds, you can open 2 Diamonds, not losing the suit. You can't open 2 Clubs with clubs and a sub-opener, so the response of 2 Clubs should always be natural.

Not sure exactly what you mean. Watching BBO vugraph games I notice quite a lot of professional players do use it.

long clubs and diamonds go through 1NT 6-11hp. if partner bids again you bid 3 of a minor Canapè. That's how I play it atleast.
