I Took Muay Thai for 1 YEAR (Sparring Before & After)

  • After taking 21 years of Karate, I had to see what Muay Thai has to offer!
    I have been Training in Muay Thai under my instructor Josh Brackett for a little over a year now, and while I am not a novice when it comes to punching and kicking heads, (sparring, of course.. or kumite, if you will) I am always down to learn new things. This is the before and after fight breakdown of my sparring journey since I have started diving into muay thai! While I don't expect myself to automatically turn into a Buakaw, Saenchai or a Samart caliber fighter, it is very important to understand what a style like Muay Thai can offer you! Kickboxing is a big part of my life, so reflecting on this past years growth has been a blast!

He throws a right straight to the body so fast while covering such distance it is insane

      Interesting, the experience from my Muay Thai gym is pretty much the opposite. The guys from from karate, taekwondo etc.backgrounds tended to struggle in sparring and some of them were highly ranked guys with years of experience too. The ones that did do well and pretty quickly were the guys that had come from a boxing background, they tended to adapt well and often could be a real handful in sparring.

    • @vincentlee7359
      @vincentlee7359 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@rgrtnyjjc From my experience: It varies. Some are shit, some are decent, and some just surprise you.
      What I have noticed from the conversations afterwards is either they had a great instructor that drilled practicality, strength training and condition OR they had sporty point style and can adapt OR they had sporty point style and suck at adapting OR they thought training in Karate meant only during scheduled classes.
      But of the styles in my area related to Karate...Shotokan for some reason mostly gets their assess handed to them. While Kyukoshin or Okinawan Karate guys hurt.
      As for TKD... depends if they can adapt or not...and if they're from WTF or ITF.
      Honestly, just depends on how they were exposed to Sparring and how they were drilled.

    Interesting. As a wushu and a sanda practitioner I engaged in MT for a year and improved a few things: My guard became better. The roundhouse kicks more powerful. And the offensive a lot more straightforward. However, the MT-guys were suprised by my overall kick speed and particular my fast punishing back kicks. For me I found these two styles to complement each other very nicely.

    • @samuelc.9686
      @samuelc.9686 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which one is more dangerous/better for self defense? Sanda or MT? What are the things Sanda has that MT doesn't and vice versa?

    • @fimfengius
      @fimfengius ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samuelc.9686 The easy answer is Muay Thai. The more elaborate answer is that Sanda stems from traditional Shaolin training which includes take-downs, wrestling, locking and breaking techniques - all with bare hands! Thus, Sanda fighters often have a few aces up their sleeves that are not shown in Sanda sparring or Sanda competitions. However, since Muay Thai students often learn quite quickly to become fairly ok fighters I would recommend MT for easily applied self defense use. But if you want to dwell deeper into martial arts I would instead recommend to search for a reputable Shaolin Sifu and entirely submit to hard training for 5-7 years. After that your body is hard as stone. You are fast as lightning. Your body is flexible like the body of a ballet dancer. And your mind is focused like a laser.

    Thanks for making this video Sensei Seth! I've been working on a fusion of Karate, Muay Thai, and Boxing for several years. While the footwork may be fundamentally different for each style, I found I was able to blend a hybrid boxing and Muay Thai Stance, albeit more of a squared up stance for close range attacks and boxing(peekaboo style aligns with Muay Thai perfectly) , and more of a traditional Karate/boxing stance to emphasize movement and to set up blitzes. I believe Boxing and its footwork is the go-between for Muay Thai and Karate.
    It's awesome the coaches at the Muay Thai gym didn't give you grief for your Karate style. A lot of coaches from my experience would get insecure if someone comes in with a different style and try to change them rather than work with them to become more complete.

    Seth, it’s amazing how similar our paths are. I’m a Kajukenbo black belt - which essentially means I’m a karate black belt. A few years ago I realized there was a big gap in my striking game, and decided to take Muay Thai to help round things out. Lo and behold, I came to basically the same conclusions as you did.
    Muay Thai definitely changed the way I spar and approach my martial arts practice, but I try not to forget that karate has its own place in direct combat - it’s just a matter of learning to blend the two styles together comfortably.

      No. Nak muay basically means fighter/boxer in thai.
      I can’t speak Japanese , but from my understanding sensei means, or at least are used as, teacher or instructor.
      The thai word for for teacher is kru or ajahn. In Muay Thai the word ajahn is often used for highly respected teachers or great fighters. Might translate to master, although the terms are used a bit differently in my experience.
