I hate the idea that both sides have to be treated equally. Both sides don't operate the same way so equal moderation is impossible, it's always gonna be lopsided. The right's idea of free speech is freedom from consequence, "I wanna say whatever I want without facing any repercussions" "I want to yell fire in a theater without being asked to leave". Applying nuance is the only way forward.
Exactly. Treating both sides equally is not necessarily unbiased. Unbiased means that when side A says it’s sunny and side B says it’s raining, you look outside to see who’s right. It does not mean reporting both statements and “letting the people decide”. Reporting both statements may be “neutral”, but unbiased it is not. It’s heavily biased towards the liar.
The left had its time in the crazy sun during the 60s and 70s. All those Red Army Faction, Baader Meinhof, Party Hearst’s lot. But they were dealt with/grew up and when the Russians stopped giving them money they faded. Now is the turn of the right and unfortunately, they have grabbed the levers of power in many places. Something the far left tankies didn’t dare dream of. Of course, Russia is supporting the crazies and their fellow travellers in parliaments and congresses like they always did, just this time it’s the far right rather than the far left as it marches their current regime better.
The far left's idea of free speech often involves censorship and overbearing suppression. However, both sides seem to offer equally bad extremes. If the goal is to maximize objective discussion and minimize low-effort posts and misinformation, heavy moderation isn't the answer - unless there's a transparent, democratic system for appointing moderators. Otherwise, it just concentrates power in too few hands. Initiatives like Community Notes are a step in the right direction, but other measures could be considered: disabling algorithms that optimize for controversy, increasing character limits, creating a message display more conducive to discussion, and enforcing age restrictions, for example.
The experience of Twitter has become 10X worse for me since Musk. After shifting the bias to the far right, and the copious amount of ads for android games and Temu crud, I just want to delete the app. I don't feel there is any value for me now. It just feels like Musk's playground now. I don't even tweet about politics but he's all over my timeline.
But Facebook is incredibly profitable even if users are gowing away slowly. Twitter has never made money, and now its losing more money than ever. It terms of impact its similar yes, but someone needs to pay for twitter, and once Musk has had enough we'll see what happens with it
I'm not sure about that... if the EU, follows the guidelines they have implemented through the DSA, Twitter might be forced to stop operating in EU space if they chose to not comply with the EU laws and rules, which will prevent 25% of users to be able to access Twitter without a VPN, and will only cause more advertisers to move out from Twitter. Basically, Twitter is just spiraling out of control, and the worst it gets, the quicker the downfall will be. Facebook, has agreed to be part of EU's taskforce, and willing to comply. Musk pulled out of the agreement, which it doesn't matter, because in the end, whether Twitter is part of the taskforce or not, they still have to comply with EU law. The taskforce and agreement was simply made to increase the synergy between VLOPs (Very Large Online Platforms) and EU regulations, to provide both parties to coordinate for both their interests. No one, n their right mind, will think that losing 1/4 of their audience, thinks that is a good business decision. Unless you are Elon ofc...
It's presence doesn't really matter. Or rather it might have mattered were it still a public corporation, because shareholders could speculate on rising share prices and thus keeping the company in cash. That's how it could grow in the past without making money during most of its existence. But the shareholders have been bought out and the company has been taking private. On the one hand that means that Musk isn't being sued by shareholders for destroying the companies value. OTOH, the company is burdened with debt and falling revenue. At some point it can't pay its bills anymore. Then it's dead. Having millions of users is irrelevant if that doesn't pay the bills. To the contrary actually. More users means more servers needed - all that server capacity and Internet bandwidth costs money.

If you haven't heard of it before. We had an investment scandal in Australia during the 80s called "WA inc." & Bond Corp (The two are entwined because both involve Alan Bond). The corporate baron behind it, Alan Bond, basically asked a media tycoon (Kerry Packer) how much for the nine network (a major media company) during a business negotiation over some of their broadcasting stations. Packer basically didn't want to sell them and went "If you can pay me $1 billion, I'll sell them to you, otherwise...". Bond agreed, got the bank to pre-approve the money but assured the bank he could get the final amount down to $800 million. Packer refused and said the deal was $1 billion and wouldn't budge. Bond ended up using $800 million of the bank's capital (which he was pre-approved for) and $200 million of his own, and paid $1.05 billion overall. (there was some other financial stuff which resulted in Packer getting $800 million in cash and a $500 million equity stake for a total of $1.3 billion). When the entire thing went bust ~3 years later, Packer got the nine network back for roughly $250 million. Musk's actions remind me of Bond in a lot of ways, and I think the former owners of Twitter are basically going to end up being Packer.
When the owner of a service that claims to be about unbiased free speech wallows in making biased posts, it obviously creates the appearance of bias, and sabotages the claims of impartiality. This is not controversial.
Free speech absolutism is a child's idea of how the world works. There is no such thing as unlimited free speech. You cannot lie to scam someone out of money, that's illegal. Musk seeking legal action against ad agencies that pulled out may be one of his stupidest decisions yet. No matter the outcome of such a case, any advertiser will think twice before rekindling their relationship with Twitter even if Twitter addresses their current concerns.

In the past years musk has earned a new nickname: Elon "screw up" musk
