Way back in the day (late 70's- early 80's) we were riding motorcycles out there and came across a lady all dressed up. She was crying and walking down a street. Anyway she was a real estate agent who had gotten lost and ran out of gas. (way before cell phones and GPS). There was about 5 of us all grity, dirty, and pretty spooky looking, she was scared when we rolled up on her. I offered her a ride out, she was really afraid then. But after considering her other choices she hiked her skirt up, jumped on and I took her back to her office.
Family grew up since 1980 here and all of us have witnessed pretty much almost every road go from dirt paths to paved and major roads. Half of Malabar wasn't even finished- it was quite pleasant in a small town.
when I lived in Palm Bay every night I would take my motor scooter there for a ride at sunset. It was beautiful. I only got lost once, and was low on gas with a rain storm coming. I used to use the farms you could see in the distance and certain marks on the road as my map so to say. I miss that place.
I know I just commented on this video but I just saw it again today. The video and the music in it is absolutely brilliant. In my opinion, this is the best video I have ever seen from Adam and I have seen hundreds of them. Perfection.
I work with a guy who was part of the crew who built the Compound. The company was General Development. The easiest way to explain why it is undeveloped is as follows.... when they cleared the land and laid the roads palm bay was growing at a good rate. Once they finished and all the land was pre sold they realized that they didnt have the policing and fire fighting capabilities to patrol all that area also. So the city never issued the first building permit to any land owners to build.
Seeing as model aircraft and UAV/S operators frequent the area, there's a chance someone could get that on video. Could even be streaming live on uTube....
The compound isn't as scary as he's making it seem, just be careful back there and if you speed look out for cops. Lots of teens go there and race and have bonfires and stuff like that it's a pretty cool place to be and drive around, but he's right, make sure you have a FULL tank of gas and a GPS the GPS is only if you don't know your way around. But it's not fun running out of gas out there. Been there done that, took my friend three hours to find me. ( She only lived about 30 minutes away )
Wow! Looks like a nice area of land in Florida. I am from Clermont, Florida. I also lived in Leesburg. I want to go back right now but I can't afford the high cost of rent. Can't afford a house. I miss my hometown Clermont. I miss the nice weather, the sand and palm trees. I get sort of homesick for it a lot.
its scary as hell at night. absolute silence, and no lights, evey once and a while you will see a set of headlights but thats it and if you pass them and turn around, they will be gone. its a very spooky place at night
Awesome to see one of my favorite TH-cam stars came to see the compound in my home town, but the compound isn't as complex as you make it seem. I've been going out there since I was 5 years old riding motocross. I love the compound. Love the woo too xD
On the Orange County side roads just like these were put in. The area, between east highway 50 and stretching south to the Beachline toll road is known as Rocket City, meant for houses to be built for NASA workers that were going to flood the area. He is on the Volusia side that has the same idea.
i live about 20 minutes from there. we go fourwheeling all the time. theres even more trails than there are roads. the place really is an experience to go out there. ive even been out there at night, it is a silent like you have never heard silent before
its crazy i recently started watching your videos on WDW and now i see this. i live less than 15 minutes away from the compound. i practiced driving there before i got my license.
I think it was intended for a housing development that never happened like many unfinished housing areas in Palm Bay. When my brother was going to helicopter school they would use these roads for flight patterns, landing, taking off, etc. Bombardier AKA BRP does use these roads some times to test their products, such as the Spyder. The most common use for the compound is for hunting and shooting practice.
I live in Palm Bay When we first moved here ( I currently live on jupiter Blvd, just near 5 miles from the compound) me and my brother took my car out to check the area out. It's actually very hard to get lost in there. We spend about an hour driving around there, than when we felt like going elsewhere, we drove out simply. The compound is actually owned in many ways. Local police perform some training exercises out there. There is, quite often, car meets/races that happen out there with allowance by the city. The history behind it is also quite interesting. Nothing to be scared of, unless we lived back in the 60's-70's
I've lived here since 1985. We were the 3rd house to be built in the area. Back then, 60 Minutes aired a special about GDC in which the reporter was escorted by the mayor. They ended up getting lost and they had to call for Police help in getting out. That incident was part of the segment. The compound gets closed off from time to time when people get stupid. Problem is that some, like myself, own lots out there and the city can't legally keep us from our own private property. I fly RC, ride 4 wheelers, and enjoy other activities there.
Haa!! Love the "spooky" music. General Development Corporation. They built many of the homes in Palm Bay when the city was rapidly expanding. The compound was also going to be built up. Then GDC went bankrupt. It's actually kinda nice going out there. Rowdy parties, midnight racing, four wheeling, folks go shooting out there all the time.. But don't get caught!! Although it looks like it's in the middle of nowhere, it's still in city limits. Here's the crazy thing. Even though it's virtually deserted there, the roads in the compound are still in MUCH better shape than in the surrounding, populated areas!!
It isn't that crazy that the roads are better than the surrounding area. They don't get used as much as the surrounding area's roads so they shouldn't be in worse shape.
My Dad worked for the state of Florida in the 60s and said it was a development that never went anywhere. People used to go drag race around there, even way back then. I'd bet a LOT of drug deals go down around there these days...
I got a 50cc dirt bike I'm new to all this and today was my first day out there, only went like a mile put from the entrance, but if I got a riding buddy I'd definitely go again for sure!!! Didn't stay long started pouring down some heavy rain.
please do not go out there alone. Bring a GPS system, bring a map, let people know. if you get lost it is hard to find your way out. especially when the sky is cloudy
It's not that serious...it's minutes away from civilization. All the streets are in Google maps. Just watch out for deep mud and assholes with toys they don't know how to operate
Good advice for the potential explorer! Wonderful adventure Adam! It looks a bit like that old "Twilight Zone" episode from the 60's..... a little girl's hand will descend upon you at any moment....
was looking at this on google earth am amazed that they all have street names, plus there are some houses that appear to be occupied in the south and that goole have added it to their street veiw ,great video keep it up
You should come out there at night and see the real compound. Beer, bonfires, and some atv riding! If you have an atv, come on out, I will give you a personal tour! It looks way different at night and is alot more fun!
I live about 5 minutes from the beginning of that road, wich starts across the street from Bayside High, where I graduated in '01. I've lost two good friends and a cousin to the compound. My cousin's blood is still be seen on the pavement.
Scott Smith Here's the thing about that: It's still there, in the same exact spot, along with the markings that were put down during the investigation. Eventually it'll all be gone, but right now it's still there. I don't care what you think you know.
Blood stains can stay for years in the proper climate. I was a forensic photographer and photographed blood years after it was spilled. Is this a defunct housing project?
It's west of Palm Bay, west of I-95, and just west of the Stillwater Lakes area. It's a 3 mile x 2 mile patch of land with a dense configuration of roads.
It looks like a developer was planning a subdivision of homes. Got the roads and the layout in place and then just abandoned it. We have subdivisions that look just like that here in Arizona, but there are homes and families in them.
I lived all 59 years of my life in Florida and this lost maze must be in Upper West Central Florida! My state is very populated in the Southern East coast side but sparsely populated in the North!
Wow that is only a few miles away from me lol. Palm Bay didn't do much planning when they made their streets. They are all criss crossed and start and stop in odd places. They were taken by surprise when a large amount of people suddenly decided to move there. Half the land was pretty swampy even 20 years ago. Even the places that have houses and such are difficult to navigate.
A number of places in FL like this one -- huge real estate investment in the 70's and early 80's when thousands of people were moving to FL every week. Areas over near Naples in similar shape - roads that lead to nowhere. Infrastructure in place, but market crashed...... They used to sell lots for $100 down, $100 a month for 10 years..... Funny thing on this one -- go to GOOGLE MAPS ..locate the property, go to street view - and let the GOOGLE MAPS car take you all around it.....
There's another place like this, only maybe not as big, near Palmdale CA. Just a subdivision that went bust before they started building houses. Kind of the opposite of the place in TX where they had abandoned houses but never built streets or any infrastructure.
I don't think theres 200 miles of roads, 50 would probably be closer to the truth, still a lot of unused road. We used to dragrace there in the 80's, and there are terrific canals also, i caught several bass over 10 lbs. there. I also saw a black panther while fishing, saw it twice, no camera dangit. Thanks for the memories Adam.
No, it's 200 miles of road. He didn't show all of the road. Trust me. I've looked around the web searching The Compound Florida and you can find all the info about it.
Gatorceri Your correct, there are much more streets going east to west than I remembered from when I lived there, and it's about 1/3 larger than I remembered also. I even found on google map, the spots where I used to put my Zodiac(inflatible) in the water, that brought back memories. One morning I was in my boat and rowed quietly past 2 guys fishing off shore. They asked me if I had done any good ?. I lifted a 9 pound bass out of the water that I had alive on a soft stringer. They went OH & AHH!, and said that they wished they knew where they could catch such a beauty. I took the stringer off the bass and released it right in front of them and said, now you know where you can catch one. I always felt bad for guys that were stuck on shore. Thanks for making me do some google work, it helps my old brain. :)
Gatorceri I'm never embarrassed or worried about being incorrect, no one is right all of the time. :) I read this afternoon while checking out about the size of "the grid" that some people think that it's haunted by ghosts. They even have a website about it. I spent a lot of days and nights there and never saw anything that wasn't natural. The place is a bit creepy, kind of like a deserted city, all those roads and no houses or lights. I think peoples imaginations run wild out there. There were a few shootings, arguments over drag races.
Art Trombley I do. I like have correct information when I post something because I've been yelled at in the past for giving wrong information when I didn't mean to. I know some places around here that I have told Adam about are supposedly haunt by dead Native Americans and Slaves. (For those that don't know, Native Americans where slaves to during those times.) There are even places here built on Native American burial grounds that are supposedly haunted. I even lived a week in a house that was haunted here. (Long story, but I swear to this day I was pushed on my sister when she fall off the bed and I ended up breaking her arm. She swears she was pushed to. That was what ended us living there. That house still stands because everyone is scared to live in it and scared to bull doze it.) I don't know much about South Florida since I've never lived in that area. I know some about North Florida, South Georgia, South Alabama, South Mississippi, and Louisiana. All ares I have lived in. Miss New Orleans the most since that was my longest home. ;-; Thank you Katrina for destroying my family home.
There is some nice driving to be had in the compound. You'll know where the most fun driving spots are because the road is black with tire rubber from all the burnouts and skidding. There are even a couple of long straight runs where you can easily top a hundred MPH if you're feeling like Superman. The PBPD's official unofficial policy is that they won't mess with people who are just doing sport driving. But using the place for parties and other questionable activities is likely to get you chased out. This place is a semi-Mad Max style road course, and is really fun to drive. But do be careful. All accidents CAN be avoided. And do remember to bring your gun....just in case.
The Smark A compass and a Corvette, and I'm good. And I and a friend were forced to ride out a hurricane in Palm Bay, once, coming back home from a hunting trip near Christmas, Fl. A bar that opens at 7:00 am every day; opened on time, during the peak of the storm! So we hunkered down there. Good times, peak winds about 90, with higher gusts.
Dumb question: Why hasn't this ended up full of RVers, hippies, and homesteaders like slab city? It seems even more suited to it (better weather and better roads).
Swampland in Florida refers to decades-old but still recurring real estate scams involving swamp lands misrepresented as being possible to develop, or "buildable". These scams became widely known and now also have meaning as a common figure of speech.
+J Michael St John I think its kinda interesting how this happens in Florida. People find places to possibly develop, sometimes clear away all that's growing there and if they lose enough money to actually do something then it all grows back really fast.
I get turned around easily when I drive around town half the time, so this is one adventure I wouldn't try even with a GPS and a full tank of gas! :D But Adam, since you were out there, I have a question: do cellphones work at all?
i live in palm bay. out new mayor has bought all of this land and plans to make a housing center here (even though the housing market collapsed). I woundnt just go walking around there. its highly illegal and you will be arrested. I have many friends and family who work of the pbpd and they are always sent out there and post there. this place is more dangerous than just the road. my uncle was shot and killed there and there has been many deaths there. lots of underage drinking and smoking happens there. its very much not a safe place so please DO NOT go out there.
its a great place to ride....... ive never seen any pigs , i mean cops out there. There are no coffee shops or donut shops. Again a great place to go mudding and hangout. Met some other good people as well > Its not dangerous or deaths out there you dumbass
Funny, my family still has three lots out there and I have several friends that own lots as well. We bought them the first time the city tried to close off access to the compound around 1988 by dumping dirt across the roads at every entrance. Cops are so ready to escort you out, some just being dick heads, until you produce the deed. They can't keep you from your own private property. Lots were less than $1000 back then and many were bought just for that reason.
When I was a teenager in the late 80's (before gps), that is where everyone went to party every weekend. We'd have bonfires and plenty of underage drinking. people would race cars and bikes and whatever out there.
check out Lehigh acres outside ft.Myers Florida. it once was like that except it was the entire size of palm bay and Melbourne combined ,probably larger then that and way more roads . crazy!!! the compound is a nice piece of Florida left...
That is pretty crazy. Just looked it up on Google maps and not only did I find the satellite view, but Google actually did a street view for the entire area! My thought is they think it's so ridiculous, they might as well map it in street view too. Google's funny like that...kinda like when you type in 'do a barrel roll'. Fun at work!!
It's NOT hard to find your way out of the place! If you have any common sense you can't really get lost. But if you have any common sense, you won't be living in Palm Bay, either.
Some may have pointed this out already, but if you go to Google Street View, this entire network of roads has been navigated and photographed and is view-able in street view. Just do a google maps search for Palm Bay, FL and look in the southwest corner of Palm Bay area.
HOLY CRAP ! I knew places like this existed, but there is positive proof... Failed neighborhoods that were planned, but never built.. Adam, wasn't there some kind of land scandal back in the 80s where someone was selling plots cheap but the land wasn't suitable for houses ? -- Dave.
The southern part is the best place to go play with your RC cars, planes, and choppers. Or go star gazing at night. Cops do patrol the area, but if you get in trouble out there, it's game over, pal.
Way back in the day (late 70's- early 80's) we were riding motorcycles out there and came across a lady all dressed up. She was crying and walking down a street. This was 10 years ago, long before I knew of Adam The Woo.
They don't make 'em like this any more.
I know I just commented on this video but I just saw it again today. The video and the music in it is absolutely brilliant.
In my opinion, this is the best video I have ever seen from Adam and I have seen hundreds of them.
Perfection.

watching in 2020 Adam.... youtube, the gift that keeps giving
The real danger is from the melodramatic music!
I've been out there from about midnight - 2 am, its absolutely crazy scary. quietest silence I've ever heard.
a drone would help in a situation like that.
It's genius the way it is. Just enough information
So deserted, a great place to "do it in the road." No one will be watching us, why don't we do it in the road?
Seeing as model aircraft and UAV/S operators frequent the area, there's a chance someone could get that on video. Could even be streaming live on uTube....
And then Adam will pop out from the bushes yelling "Happy Halloween!"
The compound isn't as scary as he's making it seem, just be careful back there and if you speed look out for cops. Chelsea Janine why isn’t it overgrown wooded area? Someone cuts the grass?
@@JohnnieV what grass? It's Florida, that's how the state looks naturally.

"Hey guys, where are we going to go shoot guns and drink beer, then do doughnuts until we get sick?" "Why, the Compound!"
Thousands of beers and tens of thousands of round I've shot out there lmao

Great place to take your kid out to teach them how to drive (until they are comfortable with dealing with Palm Bay's terrible drivers).
its crazy i recently started watching your videos on WDW and now i see this. i live less than 15 minutes away from the compound. i practiced driving there before i got my license.
Adam,I've watched nearly all your videos, they are funny and entertaining, hope there's more to come...
from the days of the second wave of the Florida land rush 1955-1970. Road network completed August 17, 1954.

Sometimes I really worry about you when you are doing adventures like this by yourself
bet there are bodies buried somewhere
crissy214 Plenty of people killed out there that's for sure.
No there is not No i did NOT!!!
People have died out their yeh not to.many bodies tho
crissy214 there was a plane crash not far away from that location
I go out there all the time people have died out there from atv crashes and no bodies laying wby wear

Myself and 2 other girls from work drove out there one night from Orlando. Omg we all got eaten up.
But no insects were involved.
You should come hang out at The Yurt. :)
What was the compound intended to be, or what was it? Love the vids Woo.
Neighborhoods
Whoa, cool video. Thanks for sharing this, Adam. The music was cool too
Think I would check that place out in a small airplane. Seems as the road are descent enough to land on.

Amazing how creepy deserted roads can be - great video.
Wow.. I know where I’m taking my car this weekend! Tons of empty roads with turns.. it’s like a free track!!

wootastic video, as always! keep em' coming Adam.

Nope it’s in Palm Bay, Brevard County Florida.
I live 30min away and never knew this existed...
I don’t understand how people get lost out there. We used to race out there in the 90’s
I was just there when my dad taught me to drive. It was creepy, but I didn't even know it was dangerous!

Wow, seems like Florida has a plethora of abandoned buildings and/or unfinished projects. To be fair, I guess it's like that most everywhere.
I don't think theres 200 miles of roads, 50 would probably be closer to the truth, still a lot of unused road.
Art Trombley I'm glad I was. XD I like to read about things that seem interesting to me. XD
Gatorceri I'm never embarrassed or worried about being incorrect, no one is right all of the time. :)
I read this afternoon while checking out about the size of "the grid" that some people think that it's haunted by ghosts.
That house still stands because everyone is scared to live in it and scared to bull doze it.)
I don't know much about South Florida since I've never lived in that area.
And do remember to bring your gun....just in case.
johnsoncm65 why isn’t it overgrown wooded area? Someone cuts the grass?
The Smark A compass and a Corvette, and I'm good.
And I and a friend were forced to ride out a hurricane in Palm Bay, once, coming back home from a hunting trip near Christmas, Fl. A bar that opens at 7:00 am every day; opened on time, during the peak of the storm! So we hunkered down there.
Good times, peak winds about 90, with higher gusts.
***** Hahaha! Yeah, it's very folksy, I admit. Humdrum is me.
Dumb question: Why hasn't this ended up full of RVers, hippies, and homesteaders like slab city? It seems even more suited to it (better weather and better roads).
because in the south we don't play that hippie shit
Evidently Tough Mudder Central Florida will be here this year! This should be interesting.
And Google Maps drove all around it...hahahaha
Swampland in Florida refers to decades-old but still recurring real estate scams involving swamp lands misrepresented as being possible to develop, or "buildable". These scams became widely known and now also have meaning as a common figure of speech.
+J Michael St John These are not swamp lands at all.
+J Michael St John I think its kinda interesting how this happens in Florida. People find places to possibly develop, sometimes clear away all that's growing there and if they lose enough money to actually do something then it all grows back really fast.
Remember the M with C episode where Al and Peg went for a sales pitch from Fred Willard?
I get turned around easily when I drive around town half the time, so this is one adventure I wouldn't try even with a GPS and a full tank of gas! :D But Adam, since you were out there, I have a question: do cellphones work at all?
i live in palm bay. out new mayor has bought all of this land and plans to make a housing center here (even though the housing market collapsed). I woundnt just go walking around there. its highly illegal and you will be arrested. I have many friends and family who work of the pbpd and they are always sent out there and post there. this place is more dangerous than just the road. my uncle was shot and killed there and there has been many deaths there. lots of underage drinking and smoking happens there. its very much not a safe place so please DO NOT go out there.
dont want everyone finding that 100+ plant farm you got going on out there hu?
its a great place to ride....... ive never seen any pigs , i mean cops out there. There are no coffee shops or donut shops. Again a great place to go mudding and hangout. Met some other good people as well > Its not dangerous or deaths out there you dumbass
***** lol
Funny, my family still has three lots out there and I have several friends that own lots as well. We bought them the first time the city tried to close off access to the compound around 1988 by dumping dirt across the roads at every entrance. Cops are so ready to escort you out, some just being dick heads, until you produce the deed. They can't keep you from your own private property. Lots were less than $1000 back then and many were bought just for that reason.
I knew your uncle
When I was a teenager in the late 80's (before gps), that is where everyone went to party every weekend. We'd have bonfires and plenty of underage drinking. people would race cars and bikes and whatever out there.
This seems like the perfect place to street race.
check out Lehigh acres outside ft.Myers Florida. it once was like that except it was the entire size of palm bay and Melbourne combined ,probably larger then that and way more roads . crazy!!! the compound is a nice piece of Florida left...
That big long thing looks kind of like a burnt up automobile.
We used to party there every weekend back in high school. Good times!
that was so cool! You didnt ask us to join you though :(
I am a day late and a dollar short but anyway, excellent presentation all the way around. Music was creepy as heckit. Superb.
Fun at work!!
best place to practice drifting!
It's NOT hard to find your way out of the place! If you have any common sense you can't really get lost. But if you have any common sense, you won't be living in Palm Bay, either.
It is pretty massive. It's contains around 200 miles of paved road and is roughly 12.2 square miles.
Is this between Miami and Tampa, or is this waaaaaayyy up in northern Florida?
This video plays all jumpy. Is it like that for everyone else?
not mine hun....
Looks like a nice quiet neighborhood.
Some may have pointed this out already, but if you go to Google Street View, this entire network of roads has been navigated and photographed and is view-able in street view. Just do a google maps search for Palm Bay, FL and look in the southwest corner of Palm Bay area.

You're welcome.
I used to drag race there back in the day with a bunch of others. Fun times!!
All of those roads are in GPS.
Is that off of San Phillipo?
Hi Adam was it hard to find?
HOLY CRAP ! I knew places like this existed, but there is positive proof... Failed neighborhoods that were planned, but never built.. Adam, wasn't there some kind of land scandal back in the 80s where someone was selling plots cheap but the land wasn't suitable for houses ?
-- Dave.
This is a perfect place to just drive really fast and have fun! :) Where is this?
This looks like a great spot to trip.
Must be a nice place to look at the star at night.
It is nice out there.
I’ve gotten lost out there countless times on my dirt bike and have gotten out within 30 minutes every time
is it sad that i can tell you exactly where you were at any given point in the video?
Thunder haha same
Yeah dude. I used to 'camp' out there with friends in highschool. Crazy ass place.
how did you find your way out? gps and plenty of gas?
The southern part is the best place to go play with your RC cars, planes, and choppers. Or go star gazing at night. Cops do patrol the area, but if you get in trouble out there, it's game over, pal.
I've been down there with friends on our motorcycles, thank God for GPS, it is a big place, broken glass everywhere from bottles, all that fun stuff
