    I do mine once a week. Flush and add new nutrient solution. Always use fresh nutrients at about 1/4 of the recommended amount. Mine are also in orchid pots with holes inside of a catch pot. This seems to work very well for my set up. Love your videos Nora💕

    I figured that I should probably test the ph in my solution, too. I transitioned quite a bunch of my plants into leca about a month ago and their not particularly doing bad, but some plants have weird newgrowth, and the tips of some plants are more brown than used to be in soil 😢 i have an urge to repot them, but i'm keen to give it a chance. i actually repotted them into leca to simplify the plant chores😮😅

    Questions:
    1. How do you determine how much of your "Special Sauce" to put into each reservoir?
    2. Do you make a new "Special Sauce" each time you water your plants or do you keep the unused "Special Sauce" and just use it the next time you water your plants?
    3. How do you water and rinse your larger plants and reservoirs?

    I feel like topping up the solution would be similar to watering your plant in soil daily with whatever is left in your cup in the morning. Sometimes it would be soaked, others dry and it would be filled with pockets of good and bad spots in the soil. And yes, the pH of the soil would eventually suffer as there would be build up and lacking nutrients.
    Plus, if the plants in leca are using the nutrient solution, they're going to essentially deplete it

  • @greenlessthumb

    How do you determine the nutrient water level? Is it a certain depth all around, does it depend on the shape/size of the cache pot, or maybe the length of the plants root system? When you make the nutrient solution it's usually for 1 litre or more. If I only have 1 plant in Leca, can the extra be stored or it would be changing pH as you described, therefore I should only make the exact amount I need, otherwise the rest is essentially wasted? Thanks!

    I have just started putting my babies in Leca and using foliage focus. But I'm going to have to get distilled water I think because our rain water has been going gross after a few days 😭 I don't know if it's the fertiliser or water but the containers are getting a film ontop literally over night 🤦‍♀️
    I don't know if this is normal or if it's ok to leave it etc.
    But I feel like it's such a waste because I would have to use fertiliser every couple of days

  • @kaitb07
    @kaitb07 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe this was covered in another video. But do you do anything differently with Pon? I've seen you do use it and I know it has some fertilizer in it that lasts for a few months. Do you always add nutrients from the beginning with pon or start adding it after some time?

  • @bigmcisback
    @bigmcisback 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nora, I hadn't really thought of the ph changing. Glad you shared that. Quick question please - Obviously some containers work better with leca than others. Is there some way to tell or measure how wet or dry your leca is other than just going by how it looks? Some of the new self watering pots look like they "might work ok" but don't have a reservoir that allows and of the leca to be fully submerged - so I wonder if plants in those posts will be getting adequate nutrients? Thanks

    • @charlottecobain6986
      @charlottecobain6986 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stay away from the self watering pots where the inner pot is not actually contained within an outer pot (there’s some that have a removable base but the plant pot doesn’t sit within it), those won’t provide enough contact with the leca for it to wick enough water even if you add a wick.
      Also, if the inner pot isn’t a net pot (or similar), I’ll use my soldering iron to put holes into the inner pot to allow for more air exchange/more ability to better sit partially in the water and nutrients.
      Hope that helps a bit!

      @TheLecaQueen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the response.

    • @TheLecaQueen
      @TheLecaQueen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer to have the inner pot in contact with the solution but having said that, I am using some wicking ones and things are going OK. In theory it should be fine especially if the roots have grown into the nutrient solution, which is the basis of the Kratky method.

    hey Nora, I'm disappointed. I have been trying to convert my plants to water for 2 weeks now. I can't take it anymore, I did everything as it was necessary to clean the roots. cleaner you can't. with toothbrush. I've seen videos where it wasn't as clean. in short every 2 or 3 days I change the water because the ph rises and full of rotten roots! no new roots but it continues to rot. so I put some in the sphagnum and I cut all the terrestrial roots of the monstera and I only put the aerial roots in the sphagnum.

    So what do you PH your water too? I have a feeling from the drops you don't..Ph changes over time but not because it's old water. PH is about lower and higher hydrogen ions or acid/alkalinity. Some people have different quality water. They should use filtered water with 1/4 strength fertilizer, any more could kill some plants

    • @jeremytalbot8565
      @jeremytalbot8565 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do love your channel, but you left all the tech stuff out. Because my tap water is over 8.4 ph I use vinegar as pH down and it works wonders, you inspired me to try leca. I just want to know what your starting ph is and after you mix your solution what's the pH? I personally think 7 days or less is ideal in semihydro just because the hydrogen ions get reduced and the pH changes, though you can change the pH more with pH down or vinegar or citric acid.

    Wish there was a simple to the point complete guide to growing plants in LECA. What nutrient solution do you use? Does the nutrient solution always give the optimal PH level? Why isn't this discussed?
