We just started AAR level 2 with my 1st grader and we are loving it! My 4th grader has been listening in and said she wanted to learn what her sister is learning so that she can spell better. I was wondering, is the new level 1 student spelling book reusable between kids like the AAR activity book?
We just have the “new” color version for level 3, but if the level 1 new version is the same there’s a teacher’s manual that’s reusable and a student book that is consumable. There’s been some “optional” cut and paste type activities inside as well as a few worksheet pages. Glad AAR is going well!
This will vary a ton depending on how many days a week you want to do the program, and how easily spelling comes to your child. A 4th grader could get through level 1,2,&3 if you’re doing 15-20 min of spelling around 4 days a week. We do about 2 days a week so it’ll take us longer. Higher levels take longer to finish I’ve heard, and have noticed my kids flying through level 1, going slightly slower at level 2 & 3. Some families drop or don’t find a need to finish all 7 levels. So many variables, but my guess is starting older you could finish 7 levels within 4-5 years. I’d love if some other families who are farther along in the program comment on this too! Here’s a thread I found on someone asking a similar question: forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/451528-all-about-spelling-time-daily-long-term/
Have you seen a lot of improvement in your child's spelling? My daughter struggles, but I'm not sure what to do to help her. We tried all about spelling once but at the time I couldn't find the time to be consistent. I'm reconsidering now that my children are a little older
I have seen an improvement in both my kids spelling, but especially in my 4th grader at the end of level 1 after learning to segment the sounds and a few common rules. My 5th grader has learned a lot, but is a little bit of an outlier because he remembers what words should look like and is a prolific reader. If you tried All About Spelling once, I’d give it another shot around 4th grade! I figure if we get through one lesson a week with 24 lessons in book 1, that’s great. In 4th grade a lesson from level 1 goes quickly, taking maybe 15 minutes. By level 2 with my oldest we slowed down, putting a bookmark wherever we were mid lesson after about 15 min and picked up where we left off the next time. You could do two chunks like that in a week, or one, but it’s def not a daily thing for us.

just this title makes me happy, knowing that someone else has thought the same thing! if im teaching phonics , why do i need spelling in 1st grade lol
Exactly!! And it’s worked out fine! It’s saved me so much time and anxiety. Glad you feel the same way!
How long will it take to get through the program if you don’t start until 4th grade?
