If I remember right the G1 Prime is identical to the Walmart version, just in the Japanese style box, but the movie Prime is a brighter repaint of the standard Voyager.
The slot in the back of Prime's back are there for the G2 voicebox. It was when the mold was reused for G2, that Hasbro decided to dremel a notch inside the mold so the electronic noisy backpack could be plugged in. It's been there ever since.
Huh.. I still have my G2 Optimus with that sound box. It was made for the front of the dark gray trailer but I never thought to put it on Optimus himself
I never had this when I was a kid so I picked up the Japanese Encore version a few years ago. Even though I'm focused almost exclusively on Masterpiece nowadays, there's something incredibly charming about these G1 toys.
I actually have three of these. One I opened and put back in the box. One I left sealed. One I have out of the box and put a really nice original cab in the box. I absolutely love Optimus prime I think the original toy design is better then any other rendition. I always thought it would be awesome to get a masterpiece size of this figure
I think this reissue is sorta like an amalgamation of every version but intended to be the most cartoon accurate. You see he has the bright colors that recall the cartoon instead of the good old blurple but at the same time still brings the essence, the detail and the features of the originals like the longer smokestacks
I got him and soundwave, and the cassettes, all full price -_- Full nostalgia buy, so I dont regret lol I dont remember ever having primes hands, early early loss, and when I was single digits years old, I smashed my soundwave in the door getting in the car. Still haunts me, and it feels so good to have a great quality replacements on my shelf now.
I actually saw one in my Walmart Summer 2019 we were killing time before I went to a wedding reception. I saw him, my mouth dropped as fast as my money to buy him.
They haven't made any new autobot since this Optimus prime. So we're not probably are not getting any new autobots what a shame. It seems we a reissue of soundwave and blaster. If we get any new G1 autobots is going to have be made by the missing Link line from Japan. We are getting Optimus prime hopefully we a Prowl Jazz Mirage Sunstreaker and the blue diaclone Bluestreak.
Picked this up from Walmart on sale two years ago (2019). I'm an original G1 fan, but not a collector. I'd had the 1985 release and I fully intended to open this one up and display him, but decided to keep him in the box unopened, forever capturing that thrill of unwrapping him for my 9th birthday. I'm glad you posted this, because part of me was curious how this re-issue stacked up. It would've been great if they'd included the trailer, roller and accessories. Now, has any third party ever made a custom gun that he can hold properly, like changing the unusable grip that rests on his forearm into something that fits in his hand, so that he's not holding that front barrel part? Seriously, I can't have been the only kid who wondered why they went to all the trouble to sculpt a grip and trigger that's not compatible with the toy.
Awesome video of Optimus Prime original and reissues. They all look great after decades of it's first release. You have the coolest and awesome toys Michael.
In the Summer of 88 just before I started HS, My family decided to move from Indiana to Az. my parrents told me to pack all my stuff, they were sending ahead first so i could start school on time. among my stuff were my Transformers I had 12. I didn't play with them much anymore but they were still treasured. they were on display and kept cleaned. so about a month after I left they arrived. I excidedly unpacked my stuff, but there were no transformer and a few other things. when I asked them about it the said they gave away all my toys to friends with younger kids, that starting HS i was to old for toys. I always wanted them back, that was impossable. I wanted to replace them, but raising a family means priorities have to be made so put it off. now my kids are all grown and my wife agreed that now would be the best time to recapture my youth. she said all my sacrifices for my family now I deserve to be a bit selfish. we've been quite surprised at the cost used and abused toys. ive been watching your channel and ive come to realise that the magic and the enjoyment doesn't come from 40 year old toys, the magic is in the memories and lessons ive learned in my formitive years. as long as they are true to the memories, reissues and 3rd party figures can reinvoke the magic. yes i would love my own back, but i can make any transformer my own. thank you for sharing your wold with me. Perhapes i can help others renew the magic they once had as well. just a side note it's not G1 but i really want the Convoy Dodge Ram as well as the cassets from that unspoken incarnation of Transformer. i am a dodge fan and and diffrent cassettes are always welcome.
A lot of collectors welcomed having another OP they could put on their crowded shelves without having to figure out what to do with the trailer. What we didn't like was still having to pay as if the trailer was included. Rumor has it they originally intended to include the trailer and forgot to lower the price when it was removed.
I should have grabbed this when I first saw him but I was kind of mad they didn’t include the trailer so I didn’t get him right away because I thought maybe there would be more of a “deluxe” version. Dang it. 🤓
Weird. I JUST ordered a G1 reissue Astrotrain to be what I’m telling myself is the coup de grace of my collection. Then I see a new Mercy vid on a G1 reissue. It’s a good day!
It's cool that he comes with the two guns. I would definitely pick one up if I came across it for a reasonable price. I like the way the small box looks. I wonder could the wee die cast Jada Prime fit in that tray?
I was quite happy with this when I got it back in 2019 because when I was a kid, I never got Prime for Christmas like my two cousins did. I have him put away for safe keeping in my collection.
I never had a G1 Optimus Prime so I jumped on this as soon as it came out. I didn't even mind paying full price. I'd kill for them to release a G1 Powermaster Prime, though.
Excellent video 🙂. Originally I thought it was weird to reissue Prime without his trailer (especially considering the price on this) but the reality is that unless you’re displaying it in truck mode, the trailer is kind of useless. It would have been smart in the day to offer OP at a lower price point without the trailer, along with a “deluxe” version with the trailer. This reissue feels a bit like unfinished business in that regard.
Good point, I'm surprised they never did it before, having the cab on its own. Would have been a lot of kids in the 80s who couldn't afford the trailer version that would have jumped on the cheaper price point.
I never had Prime growing up and bought a South American version in a gold box in 1999 off eBay. $180! I was in heaven until the toys r us reissue came out for like 40 bucks. I've bought every Walmart reissue up to this point but this one. No trailer no buy.
My first g1 Prime was the 15th Anniversary edition. I picked up one of the Walmart reissues so I can have one to display and tinker with. After watching the review, you got me wanting one of the blue windshield editions.
Oh, and is there a reason why you didn't bend the knees and turn the smoke stacks? I remember turning the smoke stacks forward and using them as extra 'lasers'.
I loved your video on your review of the g1 prime,i love the video because i love how you talked about optimus the words, the tone etc. So i was happy when i saw this video! Great video Michael, stay safe! Stay positive Till all are one bro!
I remember seeing this prime in 2019 when I was at my walmart; I wouldve got him but I was too focussed on looking for toy lines. I used to own an optimus prime when I was a kid. It was a leader class revenge of the fallen optimus prime back in 2009. That toy is long gone & long lost now. But yes you get my implementation as I imply I try to recover the lost toys & characters I used to have as a kid. Ex. General grievous. (I used to have a general grievous when I was a kid & I apparently lost him. He came in a battle pack & then for a short time not long after I lost him & never saw him again.) Until I finally found him again in my 99 cent store & bought him just so I could have him back in the collection. I am really happy to have him again. As for prime? I cannot replace prime with the same toy I had in 2009 to 2000 something when I lost him. But I can additionally have prime as a character toy in general which ever one from a continent I can choose from. Either G1, cyberverse, those type of lines. But you would want a transformer that actually transforms. Not something that is like let's say for oppose to articulation that's like star wars. I do like star wars toys & their articulation but when it comes down to Transformers I want something that transforms & serves it's purpose. If I can find this Optimus prime or.. The more recent modern kingdom or earthrise one. I'll take it. I suppose if anyone has heard any updates of re releasing Megatron. That will sell out real fast. Especially since Soundwave & most of the reissues are common in a sense for Hasbro to title this line Transformers: Vintage retro line. G1 reissues & retro commetric feels from the 1980s. Great toys.👍
I have this Walmart reissue and while I love the fact that the silver stripe around his chest is painted (first time I think, they have all been stickers since the beginning) I really wish they painted on the Autobot logos on the arms. I have the 25th anniversary edition as well and while yes, the red color is dull, they did paint the Autobot logos which was excellent. The legs on the 25th are a lighter blue which really looks great and for some reason I just love the lighter color trailer that came with that set. I don't think there is a single perfect Optimus Prime (at least not to me) but the Walmart reissue comes close. If the Autobot logos were painted and it came with a trailer it would have been perfect. Maybe the next time they re-release this all of those things (and with a trailer, and not at an overly inflated price) that are in my mind to be a perfect G1 Optimus will be there ;)
Hey Michael! Great vid, I wanted to let you know their is actually a reason why Optimus was $50 with no trailer. Basically, the old Optimus mold and trailer mold from 1984 both broke over the years, so the TF Design team actually bought some of the KOs, and then remade the mold from scratch. Remaking the trailer mold with this Optimus would have made the figure at Commander class price ($80 USD).
I love the original 84 mold of Optimus Prime. The only alterations I've made to any of the uses of it are the following: I replaced all of them that have the short Smoke Stacks with the long smokestacks and I replaced the long missiles with the short missiles.
If I remember correctly, I saw them at $50CAN when they came out, and like you I balked at that and said no. Sadly I missed the clearance price so I never got that re-issue. It looks like the windshield is much clearer than the originals. I think to sweeten the appeal of a subsequent re-issue would be to use the new head sculpt from the Music Label Convoy, and maybe the sound box reefer from the G2 days when they introduced that notch in his back because that's where the box mounted. Strange how the notch in subsequent re-issues never got filled, but it makes it easier to identify from original releases.
28.49 - 'Prime of Omens! Give me Sight Beyond Sight...!!!' Hope you get to do that Lion-O Ultimate Hero retrospective you mentioned some day soon (He-Man too)...the Optimus Prime one was the first vid of yours that I watched, and it set a very high bar indeed, yes...? A similar retrospective on the Real Ghostbusters and/or TMNT would be groovy too...although for me at least, you'd probably have to make it an Ultimate Heroes (plural) retrospective instead, as it just wouldn't feel right to elevate any one of them above the rest of the group somehow, not matter how cool their individual characters were...in both cases, they work best as a team, yes...?
This is the Version of Optimus I broke down and got. I grew up with a VHS of the Transformers Movie and watching Armada. This is the only Version of G1 Prime I own (Ultra Magnus has to be excluded because I bought a beat up version of him because a family member had one I forget who)
Cool to see this video. I just got this the other day from Facebook marketplace. Have all 6 of the smaller legion class too. Just need the Astrotrain, the larger Devastator set, and the two tape packs to go with My Soundwave to complete my Walmart g1 reissue collection. Also lucked out with Ectotron 2019 and 2021 recently too.
I've never seen the prime with the blue tinted windows. That is actually pretty cool looking. I saw the new reissue prime at my wal-mart, but I got turned off with the lack of trailer. Only thing missing from the video is A Generation 2 Optimus prime that came with the black trailer.
found one of those in walmart in the clearance section for 6 bucks and passed on it, because I already had three of them, by the way I have not open them yet.
I really love seeing the old art again on packages! So nostalgic! But yeah, considering that the original was originally $20 (Can imagine that now?) and this re-issue was $25-30 without a trailer.. I guess they figured fans just wanted the figure and they could save themselves the cost of creating the trailer. But I would’ve dropped $40-$50 on one in a heartbeat if the trailer was included. The waxy plastic is likely from 3D printing as opposed to molded plastic... or cheaper quality. Like the different between real Lego plastic vs the imitators. I fond this odd for Hasbro but then.. it’s a different world, isn’t it? I sure wish I had my original Transformers. I have the majority of my G.I. Joe collection (despite several attempts by family members to get me to sell it all), but I no longer have any of my original Transformers: Optimus, Bumblebee, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Hound, Cliffjumper, Megatron, Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Thrust, and my first one, Prowl 🥺
I got mine at Walmart in 2019, I gave it the trailer from my 25th anniversary edition cause a G1 Optimus Prime toy with its long smokestacks looks better with a trailer than that reissue with no smokestacks.
Strange to see this figure without trailer , ,im glad you got one of these , ,i hope you experience the similar joy i did in 1986 , , but my parent made me feel guilty about the price $$ cost back then , ,in 1986 money it was something like $38 bucks or more , add for inflation and find out what that would be in today's horrible money 😔😔
Mine got stolen by movers when I was ten years old it was the 1986 send away movie version. I never had the 1984 I picked it out of the sears catalog and I got socks.
On my reissue prime over time the legs transformation joints have wanted to spring back to the truck bed position if it isn't upright and the tab on one of the arms is misshapen so it doesn't sit entirely flush when it's in truck mode.
Clearance would have been a BIG GYP to me as well. IF they had originally sold it at the clearance price when it first came out, THEN I wouldn't have cared about "no trailer". That's why I bought mine from eBay. Most of the MP releases did not come with a trailer either, but even those that did, THEIR prices were OUTRAGEOUS and would have been even if my life had been different considering the values I was taught by the TV show, which influenced me to drop the entire labor force when I had a fuzzbuster job and then a car accident occurred killing a popular superhero actress from a 90's franchise in 2001, and then was forced to realize EVERY business was and still is to this day selling SOMETHING along those lines
Its nice to see the stacks are back to normal size and but his face is different, he's got little notches on his face mask. I'm surprised it doesn't come with a Matrix. Most Primes come with one nowadays.
I briefly had one of these reissues. I feel like the asking price was too high considering you don't get Roller and the trailer/Combat Deck, but the quality of the figure was great, since nothing was loose and you even got both versions of the G1 rifle. But I eventually got ahold of the Takara exclusive G1 Prime/Movie Prime 2-pack which also came with a reissue G1 Prime cab robot, so I chose to give the Wal-Mart reissue to a friend instead, one who had also grown up with Transformers but no longer had any figures.
I've had my original 1984 Optimus Prime in a cigar box for about 30 years and would love to restore it (it has broken chrome bits). What is the best option to get 'spares' from to replace the broken parts? A second hand original version or buy a reissue (in which case, which one)?
The part where you said that you could give that to your kid break is funny because I gave this re-issued Optimus prime to my younger brother and he broke a smokestack but I was able to repair it more or less still a great figure
Tell you what, get the KO with the trailer. The cab isn't as nice as the reissue, but the trailer is fantastic and as nice as the original. (And the color matches the original nicely!) On the KO's (or even originals when I find one) I use a Xacto knife to slice open the bottom of the bubble near the card. You can then tip open the bubble to get the car out. It will also hold it in place if you put it back.
Loved your videos and this one caught my eye. I just picked up the Wallmart G1 Prime and the rachet gears and springs in the hip are very tight. The rachet gears have striped to that prime won't stay standing but snaps back one notch and falls over. Any ideas as to how to keep him standing and not snapping back and falling over?
Awsome review! I have new year convoy also, it’s still sealed! My favorite reissue as well. Do you have a review video of new year convoy? If you do, can you post the link?
Just saw that BBTS has a G1 Prime reissue available along with Studio Series Convoy in G1 style boxes at bit.ly/3w3AOwS_G1Prime
If I remember right the G1 Prime is identical to the Walmart version, just in the Japanese style box, but the movie Prime is a brighter repaint of the standard Voyager.
Where can an original G1 Optimus Prime be purchased with a trailer?
The trailer actually does come with the cab. It's just stuck in subspace, haha.
I got this as a graduation present for myself when it came out. Best Transformers purchase ever.
I had to organise one of these through my brother stateside for my littlest boy. It made his Christmas. Iconic, classic toy.
Great review as always. I too did not purchase, due to the high price and lack of the trailer. Glad you bought it at clearance. Keep on trucking.
I never had this when I was a kid so I picked up the Japanese Encore version a few years ago. Even though I'm focused almost exclusively on Masterpiece nowadays, there's something incredibly charming about these G1 toys.

Same here brother
When you can make a half hour video about Optimus with no trailer, you’re good at what you do
I actually saw one in my Walmart Summer 2019 we were killing time before I went to a wedding reception. I saw him, my mouth dropped as fast as my money to buy him.
Hopefully Hasbro hasn't closed shop on the G1 reissues. There's a long list of characters we're waiting for!
I would hope for Sunstreaker as I don't think that mold got an official re-issue
They haven't made any new autobot since this Optimus prime. So we're not probably are not getting any new autobots what a shame. It seems we a reissue of soundwave and blaster. This is an excellent review of Optimus. I love the old commercials for the Transformers. Now we have many different options for such an icon.

My OG G1 prime has the leg problem and its missing fists and a lot of accessories
found one of those in walmart in the clearance section for 6 bucks and passed on it, because I already had three of them, by the way I have not open them yet.
6? Damn !
Definitely some good Prime examples of Optimus Prime
Biggest problem with that 25th Anniversary movie Prime is it's more pink than red.
I believe the hole on the back is from the G2 rerelease, and is for the sound pack.
Thanks for the intel!
Still a classic! 😁
How'd you type that Optimus head like an Emoji?
The intro reminded me of my reaction upon finding the existence or "3rd party" Transformers.
...
I love third party transformers btw.
Why can’t I stop watching u XD Nice video Michael!
God i miss mine, was stolen a year after i got it. Luckily i got the missing link.
I got it in clearance at a local walmart for $50! I could not believe what I saw :)
The one I had bought by my mom when I was a kid was the takara one. It had the cardboard trailer.
Its nice to see the stacks are back to normal size and but his face is different, he's got little notches on his face mask. I'm surprised it doesn't come with a Matrix. Most Primes come with one nowadays.
Optimus Prime. Always the best.
Use the vaseline trick for the old Prime tyres - bring them back to life!
It's a literal convoy of Convoy's!!
this was the G1 prime I got along with the studio series 38 optimus prime 35th Anniversary pack
The standard rifle seems to have the two side peg holes my G2 optimus uses for his extra firing guns. Maybe it is that version of his ion rifle.
This the version I got, and I love it!
I'm still surprised they didn't make a trailer separate and charge 35-40$ I still had to buy one
This is how I got my Optimus prime great review
Edit voice typing on the I pad is hard sorry
Tell you what, get the KO with the trailer. The cab isn't as nice as the reissue, but the trailer is fantastic and as nice as the original. (And the color matches the original nicely!) On the KO's (or even originals when I find one) I use a Xacto knife to slice open the bottom of the bubble near the card. You can then tip open the bubble to get the car out. It will also hold it in place if you put it back.
The hole was a g2 added feature for the refer unit back pack
I looked, and I looked, and I looked...but I never could find😕him in Walmart during his reissue period...💯✔️ Such a major bummer...👎🏼
Hello Michael, do you have a current list of all the G1 reissues for both Autobots and Decepticons?
So at 16:50 what you're saying is, there is "more than meets the eye"
I got this one, hot rod and astrotrain all on clearance at Walmart.. No way would I have bought them at retail. The missing trailer was a 100% fail!
Mike they all look great! In fact I would say they all look in their PRIME!😂😁👍
never gets old!
My OG prime was 24.99 I remember because I skipped lunch everyday until I saved enough to purchase him.
Awsome review! I have new year convoy also, it’s still sealed! My favorite reissue as well. Do you have a review video of new year convoy? If you do, can you post the link?
Thanks! Yup, I reviewed New Year Convoy a while back as a Patreon Exclusive.
@@MichaelMercy I see, I might just have to become a member now!🤔
Nobody hardly reviews that one because of its rarity. Keep up the great work!👍🏼
“So help me, God. He had yellow eyes.”
I just got mine where can I get the truck bed?
I have the same reissue, not after even 10 transformations did the legs not work anymore
I don't get what the name of the blue windshield OP is called. Where can I find it?
Takara New Year Convoy. Only on Ebay now.
@@MichaelMercy Thank you.
@@MichaelMercy Saw the price and my day is ruined 😢
Is it die cast metal with rubber tires?
i got that one also ..nice figure ..no trailer but still cool....never got the og.... maybe one day😁
Paid 35 bucks for it, and got him a vintage g1 trailer.
Think you'll ever do a video on Star Convoy?
If I ever get him, sure.
Only reason I'd buy this is for replacement parts for my original G1 toy, but $70 was way too high.
Nice video!
My prime is a little battle damaged
We need a g1 rerelease of his trailer
I picked this up on clearance and it looks fine on its own, but looks way less detailed when compared to the original or 2001 reissue
It's so cool seeing these older authentic g1 models since I was born during the g2 and Bay era of toys. Great review!
15th Anniversary and Encore are the closest to the original G1 Optimus Prime imo.
Any word on when or if Walmart is going to do any more exclusives?
Nope. That ship may have sailed.
@@MichaelMercy Unfortunate but thank you very much for the response. PS, love your channel
Mine got the blue eye treatment. Optimus
Prime has blue eyes.
Why not a reissue with its trailer?!? 🤔
